These are the restored foundations of the "fire temple" of the Irish goddess-cum-Catholic saint Brighid (or Brigit), where, for centuries, 19 women tended an eternal flame in 20 day cycles (with the Lady herself left to tend the fire on the 20th day). Extinguished during the reign of Henry VIII, the flame was relit in February 1996 at a different location in Kildare and is being perpetually tended by sisters of the Brigedian order.
