Another Auld Lang Syne

:: New Year's in New York City with friends.  The holidays.  It's New Year's Eve.  And we join the celebration already in progress ::

Skarrphace: Hey, Grim...you are out of champagne, my friend...

Neil Grimsley: No way!  I bought like 5 bottles, and I knew that'd be enough for a Team Perfect reunion...

Skarrphace: It would appear as if you were mistaken, sir...*laughs*....want me to run down to the corner store and pick up some more?

Neil Grimsley: Yeah, 'Phace, that'd be great...thanks...

:: Skarrphace grins at his longtime friend and turns to leave, grabbing his jacket and putting it on in the hallway.  He gets to the elevator and soon is outside.  It's snowing now.  Skarrphace pulls the collar of his jacket up around his face in an effort to keep warm as he reaches the corner store.  He gets inside and shakes the snow off his shoulders, and starts down an aisle.  He gets to the frozen food section and stops in his tracks, and here is where our story begins ::

Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling New Year's Eve
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve

Skarrphace: Theresa...?

:: The lady turns around to see who called her name, turning to face him ::

Theresa: Hmm?

She didn't recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide

Theresa: Michael!!

Michael: You do remember...

She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried.

Michael*laughing, almost crying*  God, how long has it been?!

Theresa:  Years...too long....*laughing, almost crying*  How've you been?!

Michael:  I've been good, you look great...here, let's take your groceries up...

We took her groceries to the checkout stand
The food was totaled up and bagged

Theresa:  Some snow we're having...

Michael:  I know, I haven't seen snow like this years...

We stood there lost in our embarrassment
As the conversation dragged.

Michael:  I know this is sort of forward, but would like to go have a drink?  Just to catch up on old times?

Theresa:  I'd love that...*soft smile*

We went to have ourselves a drink or two
But couldn't find an open bar

Theresa:  I tell ya what...let's just get a six-pack at the store there and we'll drink it my car...

Michael:  Sounds perfect.

We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank it in her car.

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.

Theresa*holding up her hand, showing a ring*  I married an architect...can you believe it?

Michael:  Do you love him?

Theresa:  I don't like to lie, Michael...

She said she'd married her an architect
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
She would have liked to say she loved the man
But she didn't like to lie.

Michael:  The years have been kind to you, Theresa....your eyes are still as blue as the day I met you...

I said the years had been a friend to her
And that her eyes were still as blue

Theresa:  Thanks...

But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I
Saw doubt or gratitude.

Theresa:  I've seen you on TV...you've got a great career now...wrestling, I never thought of you that way...but you must be doing pretty good for yourself...

She said she saw me on the T.V. shows
And that I must be doing well

Michael:  Well, the audiences are great...but I hate all the traveling I have to do...

I said the audience was heavenly
But the traveling was hell.

Theresa:  To innocence...

Michael:  To now....

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to time
Reliving in our eloquence
Another 'auld lang syne'...

Michael:  Looks like that's the last of the beer...

Theresa:  Yeah...well I'd better be getting home...it's late...

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say

Theresa:  It was really great seeing you again, Michael...Happy New Years...*reaching to kiss him*

She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away.

:: Michael watched her drive away into the snow and watched her until she was gone ::

Just for a moment I was back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain...

:: Skarrphace turned and headed back towards Neil's apartment building, the only thing you could see was his back to you as the rain began to fall on the street, and then you saw nothing, as the scene faded out  ::

Happy New Year.
