Walking in Memphis

Marc Cohn, as sung by Cher
<Midi Audio file>

Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
W.C. Handy -- won't you look down over me
Yeah I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy (GIRL) can be
<chorus:>
Then I'm walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel

Saw the ghost of Elvis
On Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
Then I watched him walk right through
Now security they did not see him
They just hovered 'round his tomb
But there's a pretty little thing
Waiting for the King, Down in the Jungle Room

(Chorus)

They've got catfish on the table
They've got gospel in the air
And Reverend Green be glad to see you
When you haven't got a prayer
But boy you've got a prayer in Memphis
Now Muriel plays piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would --
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
And she said --
"Tell me are you a Christian child?"
And I said "Ma'am I am tonight"

(Chorus)

Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain

  • "Post Modern Prometheus" has become one of the vintages in The X-Files. Not only for its always-weird story line, but also for some of the most beautiful moments through out the show that make PMP  memorable. And don't forget Mulder and Scully danced with "WALKING IN MEMPHIS".
  •
  • Mark Snow, the "music guy" of The X-Files, wan an Emmy for his outstanding score. (except for those Cher songs, I guess.)
  •
  • If you feel that you've seen the "Big Mutato" somewhere before, you don't need a new pair of glasses. Chris Owens, the Vancouver- based actor who had played Agent Jeffery Spender (CSM's son) in previous episodes, is indeed the double headed Big Mutato. It's amazing hearing him singing along with "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore".

  • That was not the real Cher. It was an impersonator. The real Cher turned off the offer, but then she regretted. If she had know the great success rate the previous guest actors had came out, her acting career would not be this bumpy recently. But she still had her singing career and nice artificial body, eh?
