The Quest

Such A Cozy Place

Like so many deleted scenes from the Blackstar tapes, this one was actually filmed and appeared in the original 1981 airing. Although we can't say for certain, it's possible the scene was cut in order to fit three episodes onto a single hour-long tape.

The cut scene begins after Klone announces the appearance of the Ice Castle in the second frame.

With Blackstar indulging in some of his trademark banter, many fans who saw the original airing remember his belittling comment, "Let's see if the Overlord can come out and play." The script even indicates that George DiCenzo is to deliver the line sarcastically. Now of all the cuts that could have been made (did we really need those half-naked Trobbits in the hot tub?), this one should have stayed in.

The top shot involves the actual approach to the Ice Castle, with Warlock passing over the frozen landscape and through forbidding icy crags. Below is a long panning shot (turn your head--or the monitor--sideways) looking down from the top of the Ice Castle to the drawbridge and the chasm where our heroes land.

More banter from our heroes, commenting on the apparent lack of a moat. Klone doesn't like the fact that it's a "hole that goes on forever." Why should he be concerned? He's the one who can turn into a bird and flap himself out of a long drop.

Notice Mara's different headdress above. The storyboard was apparently drawn by more than one artist, because in some scenes she appears with her familiar headdress, while in the one above she appears with another version.

In the current version, the scene picks up as the drawbridge descends in the last frame.
