City of the Ancient Ones

Crystalloid Attack

Staff writer Michael J. Reaves always managed to treat Klone as something better than mere scenery, and he knew how to capitalize on the character's shapeshifting powers. In "The City of the Ancient Ones," Klone and six of the seven Trobbits are swept into the microcosm of Amber's magic ring, where Klone is quickly turned to crystal by a crystalloid monster. However, in the original version of the script, as shown by the storyboards, the shapeshifter engages in a brief though unsuccessful battle with the creature.

Rather than passively wait to be attacked, as in the final cut of the episode, Klone takes the initiative and charges the beast.

The battle is going pretty well for our heroes up to this point, but this is where things start to turn ugly.

Whether or not the Trobbits are running toward Klone to help him, or away to get the hell out of the way, is a matter for speculation.

Because the battle in its final form would have taken about 1-2 minutes of screen time, and because whoever made the final cut probably thought Klone looked silly being frozen as an amoeba, this scene never made it to the final version.

At this point, the crystalloid creature advances on the Trobbits. A later shot, which we also do not see, has Gossamer being frozen in similar fashion. Just in case you were wondering why you don't see him later in any of the crystalloid microcosm scenes.
