The Better Thief
by Molly Bennett in The Bawdy Beautiful Songbook
Three men are riding down the road, bragging. One makes a bet he can seduce the next girl they see. To their surprise, the next girl they encounter seems more than willing, asking their buddy to promise her "what's between his thighs." He readily agrees and gets off his horse, whereupon she dodges him, leaps up on the horse, thanks him and rides off.

I've seen this also as a Victorian-age poem where she holds the men off with pistols as she rides away.

Advice the the Ladies (Drink to the Men)

by Morgan Wolfsinger in Songs that Should Not Be

The singer gives humorous advice on dealing with husbands or lovers who are into sheep, other men, S&M, or self-adoration. I find the pedophilia verse in bad taste (it's not graphic or anything, but I still avoid what could be a very hurtful topic for anyone in my audience). The song end with the recommendation that, if you still can't stand him, don't kill him - just go get another! The chorus exhorts women to "Drink to the men....for though they are trouble, there's still one in ten that's worth every minute.."

My copy of Songs that Should Not Be seems to have wandered off at the moment. When I locate it, I'll let you know where you can get it. Til then, you can often find Wolfsinger songbooks and tapes at Pennsic War.

Beggars to God

performed by Double Trouble (Evy Mayer and Jean Farnworth) on their CD Soup to Nuts

Three lovely verses: a girl runs off with a gypsy man, they live wild and free, they sing the gyspy song and touch the hearts of the high and low. The chorus celebrates love, forgiveness and the sacred in each person. This is one of my favorite love songs.

Another Song for the Ladies - Jock O'Hazeldean - is also on Soup to Nuts. It's a good recording of it.

To order Soup to Nuts or another Double Trouble album, contact Evy Mayer at:

Last I checked, CDs were $15 (US) and cassettes were $10. But ask Evy for the latest.
