Merekiyarrahlahr ka-Afaneh is blind, and the dog there is a koyotarn, or companion animal bred by minotaurs to be a hunting aid, and guardian. Somewhat smarter than normal canines, they are still very much animals, however, and not sentient. Like Yarra's battlesteed, the koyotarn helps her survive and manuever. Far from helpless, the wire-pelted female can whirl a mean staff, and usually wears a hat and cloth over her eyes, being rather sensitive to the fact they've lost their original color, turning a clouded grey. Only when alone or in her room does the bandanna come off, as shown in the view of her seated.
