In the late 1930s, Texas boy Harry "Tex" Thomson struck it rich in the oil fields, but left his business to pursue a more adventurous lifestyle. Thomson and his confidant Bob Daley along with their manservant Gargantua Potts, embarked on several adventures in the years to come. In November 1940, Tex took a mission from New York City Special Prosecutor Maloney to watch over a shipment of food to Europe. The liner was sabotaged by Nazis and sunk, and Tex was believed dead. Against all odds, however, he survived. Dressing up in a patriotic costume, he reappeared as the whip-wielding Mr. America, a vigilante battling Nazis and fifth-columnists. When Daley realized that Tex had survived, he adopted a costume and became Mr. America's unlikely sidekick "Fatman". Mr. America was briefly a member of the All-Star Squadron, but left the US on the request of President Roosevelt to covertly battle the Nazis in Germany. Now known as the Americommando, Thomson infiltrated the Gestapo as Colonel Otto Riker, operating behind enemy lines. Operating until early 1945, he was believed killed in an explosion in Dresden.
It has been implied that Thomson survived World War II and is now the Coordinator of Hero Hotline, although this has never been confirmed.

Tex Thomson relied on his wits and a good right cross to get him out of the jams he found himself in as an investigator. Often aided by the dumb luck of Bob Dailey or the terrific strength of Gargantua Potts, Tex was able to fight crime and solve mysteries through the late 1930s and early 1940s.
As Mr. America, he showed his proficiency with a whip and took a more aggressive physical role in fighting crime and Nazi spies. He whistled "Yankee Doodle" to unnerve his opponents and left a red, white and blue feather as his calling card.
He also used a "flying carpet" which doubled as his cape on several occasions.
As the Americommando, he underwent intense training in spying and more intense combat techniques. He learned German well enough to be taken for a native and many other espionage skills.
