The X-Files Expo 1998 Tour came to the Coconut Grove Convention Center in Miami, FL on April 4th and 5th - I went both days (the tickets were my 13th b-day present) with my friend Madelinne. There was some negative opinions I had about it, but other than that, I had a blast! The first thing they did when we walked in the convo center was check our bags for cameras. Thinking that this was gonna be a normal convention, we brought a camera. Luckily I stuck it in my pants and snuck in. Even though you couldn't take pictures, there were some people hovering around with Sony Mavica digital cameras that take pictures onto a floppy disk. If you ask them, they'd take pictures for you and give you the floppy disk to take home. Guest speakers who atteneded were Nicholas Lea, Dean Haglund, Frank Spotnitz, William B. Davis (Saturday only), and Steven Williams (Sunday only). Andy Meisler was there too (author of "I Want To Belive"), poor dude. He was all alone in his corner, so I gave him my book to autograph. I told him that I really like his episode guides because they're so detailed and tells a bunch of inside stories, and that sorta made his day. ;)
Our first stop was "Mulder's Office". Using green screen technology, we had our picture taken in Mulder's office, totally detailed, complete with the pencils stuck in the ceiling (from Chinga)! Some cool beans! :) The cost was $3.00, but well worth it. (I wasn't too sure if Madelinne wanted me to post the office pic, so I only put myself. Now she tells me she could care less, so I'll scan it again for the whole image.) Since we came early, the line wasn't too long for it, but then we went over to the Oldsmobile Intrigue green screen the line was waaay too long. ;_; Me and Madelinne then wandered over to The X-Files movie trailer was being shown. We waited for five minutes or so, and saw it. Twice. The whole thing was roughly 10 minutes long or so. It was really cool! When we came out, they were showing various scenes and bloopers from XF, and there was an announcement that the first guest speaker - Dean Haglund. Yay! Langly! We went over to the stage and got seats in the front row. As the seats began to fill up in back of us, he came on stage and did this cool inprov comedy routine. He's a real funny dude! :) Some people formed a line and asked him questions, but I really couldn't come up with a question. Then he left the stage, and they took about a ten-minute break. We left to the cafeteria to get some lunch, and Madelinne's mom saved our seats. When we came back, we found out our next guest speaker was...Steven Williams! Yaay X! He's a really nice guy, not at all like his character! He was flirting with a lady who was sitting next to me (*waves to Shelly*) lol! Me and Madelinne couldn't come up with a question yet again, but we really wanted just to talk to him! So, we just asked him if Mr. X was really dead. He said he really didn't know.
After a few more questions, he left the stage, and Frank Spotnitz came on. Little did I know, my most embarrassing/eventful excursion of the expo was about to unfold. He talked for a few minutes about the differences between the movie and the show; people formed a line again to the microphone to ask questions. Madelinne's mom comes up to the mic, and asks her question. (I don't remember it...I was too suprised at what happened next.) After she got her answer, she said something like, "Oh, and this is your guys number one fan, Kirsten! She's been watching XF since she was 8, yada yada yada..." and went on like this! I hear the room fall completly silent and watch roughly a few hundred X-Philes staring at me. Eep. I hide behind Madelinne for refuge. Eep. I see Frank Spotnitz staring at me. Eep. Then he grins. "Hey there, Kirsten! Nice to meet you! I hope you like the movie!/Wow, since you were 8??/It's a little Scully! (alas, my nickname :)/It's so refreshing to see such an avid fan after all this hard work/...yadayadayada..." We had a full-minute conversation, except I forget what it was about because I was the center of attention and scared quite crapless! Luckily, the other X-Philes didn't really mind. After a few more questions and comments (he was suprised when someone asked "In the episode One Breath, Scully's mother says to Mulder that she gave her the cross on her 15th birthday - yet in Christmas Carol, we learn it was a Christmas present. Was that a mistake?), he left the stage.
A few minutes later, me and Madelinne were walking around aimlessly and came across the props section. Thankfully the photographers with their nifty Mavica digital cameras were tagging along not far behind. We got them to take a few pictures of us next to props, Mulder and Scully's wardrobes and badges, a few assorted decapitated heads or so, and then in front of the main entrance where they took a cool pic of us behind some XF spotlights. In the props shelves was the evil doll from Chinga, Scully's Bucket O' Chicken from Our Town, Leonard Betts' decapitated head, the Peacock brother's club, Duane Barry's sweatshirt, along with *lots* of other props and revolting cool goodies! We spent about twenty minutes there - there was lots to look at, but an X-Files trivia game was about to begin! I went back over to a mini-stage where they were playing "Fact or Fiction?" and watched a few seconds of it. It was easy - it was basically true or false questions (like: Is Byers named after JFK?"). The next round, I joined in. I passed with flying colors, twice. I won X-Files comic #19 and then #21, but the third time I won was a bit more difficult (*nudgenudge Cindy*), because it was down to two people, and we were both goin' on strong! Finally, the host just asked us "What did Mulder find in the vial he found in the Redux two-parter? Well, being that the Redux episodes are my favorites, I knew the answer, and I blurted out "Deionized water and a microchip!" (The host rolled his eyes, "the Scully girl wins, yet again!") and they offered me a video set. I didn't want to be greedy, so I gave it back to the host because I already had all the episodes on tape. He gave it to the runner-up. ;)
After that, me and Madelinne sauntered over to the X-Files Fan club trailer. I figured it was about time that I renewed my membership, so I filled out my form and got a free X-Files movie poster. As we walked out, there was an announcement that Nicholas Lea was to be the next guest speaker!! Yaay Krycek! We hurred back to the stage, and luckily the fan club trailer was close to the stage, so we got great seats again. He was such a nice guy!! He came out with an "I Love Miami" shirt, and gushed on about how he loves the warm weather and he went for a swim at the beach and the hotel pool and the people are so friendly down here (*lol* nice people? In Miami? Where??). So he talked for a few minutes, and people came up to the mic. Me and Madelinne were in the front of the line. Madelinne asked if it was fun working with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. He said he loved it and they're such wonderful, hard-working people with great chemistry. I was next, and I asked him if it was difficult to learn Russian. (Hey, what can I say?? I knew the answer, but I just wanted to talk to him! lol) He said yep - it took him a long time, but one of the actors who was from the Ukraine said he did a good job at the pronunciations. He went on for about thirty seconds, but I really wasn't listening. I was just drooling and nodding my head like a dork. ^_^
Me and Madelinne then walked around some more, and came upon rows of computers. Since we both love computers, we sat down and looked at some stuff on there, like Unrestricted Access, played around with the web cam, and signed the AOL guestbook. It felt pretty cool to sit down after all this. After that, they announced that the guest speakers were gonna sign autographs! We went in line and I had everyone autograph my stuff. I grinned like an idiot when I got to Nic Lea, and he smiled and said "Hi there!" back. He signed my hat, and it said "Lots of Love, Nicholas Lea". Next was Frank Spotnitz. He saw me and grinned. "Hey there, Kirsten!" I grinned back and managed a meek little "Hi!" He signed the back of my hat and asked me if I liked the Expo so far. I said I loved it, and I was going to the NY expo in May and couldn't wait to meet Gillian Anderson. He said "I hope to see you there! Have fun!" (unfortunetly there was family emergency and didn't go...) As we were leaving, we stopped by the XF shop place and we all bought tee-shirts. But anyhoo, all in all I had a great time!
