FROM THE CENTER CHAIR

We’re Back!

And have we been busy!

For those of you getting our first newsletter (the second time around), let me recap for you:

Last June, the USS Delta Clipper went into Spacedock for refit and upgrading. Now, 10 long months later, we are ready to resume our diplomatic and peacekeeping missions.

In February, I was introduced to some of my new crew members, and in March, I welcomed back some of the original crew.

In April, we did our first highway clean-up, followed by a Bar-B-Que, and both, in my opinion, were a resounding success!

During the following meeting, we formed a uniform committee, made plans for May (including a stargazing campout), and planning a get-together for the May birthdays.

And now the big news:

Later that evening, my Communications Chief (Franz Bruyere) and myself met with Rear Admiral Malotte (Region 12 Coordinator) to pick up new member packets. Before we knew it, we were launched as the Shuttle Delta Clipper, with a crew of 7, from the USS Nomad’s shuttle bay!

I could not have been prouder, but it’s YOU, the individual member, that makes this possible.

The turn-out for the highway clean-up convinced me that this will be a crew that I can be proud of.

Remember, this newsletter and the club are not just mine, but yours as well. I want your input (good or bad) to help us grow and be a respectable part of this community.

I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to each and every one of you for everything so far.

Keep up the good work and we’ll have fun as well!

Rick

CON-TACT

Hailing Frequencies Open!

Welcome aboard to all who enter. I am Franz Bruyere, Communications Chief.

I am honored to serve on this ship, and with this crew.

I am in charge of Ship and intra-ship communications. This means that I will be communicating with both the crew and the outside world, by various means.

I will work hard to perform my duties, and to have fun with the crew.

Signing off,

Communications Chief

Franz Bruyere

ALL PHYCHED UP

Hi! My name is Jocelyn Giles. I am the Ship’s Counselor / Activity Director.

That is (in other words), FUN! FUN! FUN! FUN! And yes, FUNd raising projects.

We just had our first Birthday Bash May 2, 1998. It was great. Everyone showed up, and this is just the beginning!!

Besides our Birthday Bashes, there is camping, miniature golf, going to the Zoo, swimming party, bowling, skating, pizza party, and picnics.

Are you getting the idea?

Yes FUN FUN FUN!

Now, let’s not forget the fund raising: Yard sales, bake sales, recycling cans, selling candy bars, etc. We already have $7.20 in the Ships Fund. It’s a start.

I would like to get some ideas from you, also, and the kids too.

So please, feel free to stop by or call.

Hope to hear from you soon!

STARFLEET: THE INTERNATIONAL STAR TREK FAN ASSOCIATION

STARFLEET is the 22+ year old fan organization whose members (4000+) are united the world over in their appreciation of Star Trek: The Greatest Human Adventure. Hundreds of chapters worldwide link members into local fandom as well as the International organization.

We are people of all ages and from all walks of life who enjoy Star Trek in all its forms -- the three season original series, the major motion pictures, the television series (The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager), and the numerous books and magazines. Our Prime Directive is to share our interest in Star Trek in an open environment, to serve our community, and to have fun. All interested persons are welcome to join us.

Your membership in STARFLEET includes a subscription to the Communique, our color bi-monthly newsletter. It contains information on upcoming Star Trek movies, shows, conventions, and club events. It also contains articles of general interest to Star Trek fans.

Star Trek. Its debut on television 30+ years ago was the first successful mass visualization of the future. Its enduring strength arose from the fact that it was the first science fiction show to emphasize plot and character -- and to present a universe where people of all races worked together to solve common problems.

Throughout an original three season run, a cartoon sequel, a number of major motion pictures, three new television series, and numerous books, the dream lives on. Classic Trek gave us more than an escape from the turbulent 60’s. It offered hope for the future. When it was canceled, Bjo Trimble’s successful grassroots campaign to keep it on the air made television history. Star Trek taught us that we can control mass media -- we do have a say over our environment ... and our destiny.

Join us as we celebrate the future today, and look forward to a brighter tomorrow!

The meetings of the Starships (clubs) of the Fleet offer opportunities to have fun while you serve your community. We recognize crew members who have done extra service or distinguished themselves in service to STARFLEET. In keeping with the problem-solving themes of Star Trek, our members do more than meet and talk about the show. The crews of the Fleet are active in support of charity. We believe that time is our most valuable gift, so we donate time to help persons and charitable organizations. We conduct fundraisers and volunteer our services to help our community.

Each club member brings his or her special abilities to the group. We recognize this value by assigning fictional ranks and positions within the Fleet, reflecting the interests of the members. In addition, participation allows the individual to advance in fictional rank.

We study science. Outer space holds mystery, but our own ever-changing planet offers a lifetime of study. We keep abreast of current scientific projects and share our knowledge through programs we conduct in the community.

We support the arts. Creative writing, art, model building, and craft events are but a few of the human endeavors in which we are interested.

We enjoy athletics. A healthy mind controls a healthy body, and we value physical activity for fun. We challenge other ships and conduct fun athletic events.

Finally, we play. Our ships go on Away Missions to visit other Star Trek clubs, conventions, and theme parks. The Fleet is like an extended family. The closer we get to know one another, the more respect we have for the diversity we shall see.
