Not all creatures of the Abyss are outright disgusting, or outright lustrous in their demeanor, or both. Abyssal Angels look like mortal females with bat-like wings. Unlike the scantily clad succubi, their dress in long, flowing attractive dresses, which do not seem provocative without a closer look, but they have to be cut to take into account the wings.

Like all residents of the Abyss, these creatures are driven by a lust for power and a will to corrupt. Similar to succubi, Abyssal angels tempt mortals, but not so much through primary lust, though they have no problem seducing men to reach their goals, but be leading them to strife, conflict at war, giving ill consel to all sides. After that they make sure that as many inhuman cruelty flows into the conflict as possible, to twist the hearts of people and bring them into the Abyss.

Generally Abyssal angels are not particularly conspious. While not the most intelligent tanar'ri around, they are wise enough to fit into the society they are working in as ladies of higher position. Characters seeing them can sometimes see their bat-like wings, because Abyssal angels radiate a hard to identify aura of evil and wrongness. Few other things can alert a casual observer that an Abyssal angel is more than a beautiful lady.

Combat

While they generally prefer subterfuge and intrigue, Abyssal angels can hold their own in combat. When in close quarters, they attack with long swords (+3 keen evil) or use their spell-like abilities when they find the time. Abyssal angels prefer to pummel opponets from a distance with their powers and spells, preferring to disable and enslave defeated opponents, rather than killing them.
Demonic Beauty (Su): Everyone, who sees the Abyssal angel's face must succeed at a will save, or make suffer a -4 penalty to Attack Rolls, AC, Hide and Move Silently checks against her.
Outsider Qualities: Abyssal angels cannot be raised or resurrecred. They have 60 ft. darkvision.
Spells: Abyssal Angels cast spells as 15th level sorcerers. They usually know a number of monster summoning spells, but may never learn any spell that changes their appearance by illusion or polymorph and similar effects. Abyssal angels may cast spells from the chaos and evil domains as arcane spells. Spells known: 9/5/5/4/4/4/3/2; Spells per day: 6/6/6/6/6/6/6/4.
Spells-Like Abilities: At will - acid missiles, blood stars, ray of enfeeblement.
Tanar'ri Qualities: Abyssal angels cannot summon other tanar'ri naturally, but many learn summon monster spells to replace the abiltiy.
Wings: Abyssal angels use bat-like wings to fly. In addition they work as shields against magic, as though they has a permanent spell turning cast on them with an infinite number of spell levels that can be turrned. When not flying or using them as spell shields, Abyssal angels may hide their wings in illusuion, which can be disbelieved as a glamer, particularly by characters who sense the creature's evil. Characters with more than 15 levels or hit dice are always allowed a saving throw to percieve an Abyssal angel's true form.

Background

Abyssal angels do not seem to fit into what passes for society in the Abyss. They do not take part in the Blood War, or the constant fighting between the fiends, though some have reported fierce battles with angry succubi. It seems that these creatures are more often encountered on the prime material plane, than in the Abyss. It is not even sure that they are really tanar'ri, but when in the Abyss, they say so and are powerful enough to get away with it.

"Once there was an angel of war, mighty in arms and magic, serving a god of war from Celestia, but the angel was dissatisfied. She desired more action and fighting to prove her value, than the world she guarded offered, so she was sent to the lower planes. There she fought in the Blood War, first impressed by the sound strategies of the Baatezu armies, but above all she desired power. She changed sides, followed and supposedly even led the hordes of the tanar'ri.

"Abandoned by her god, she was forlorn on the broken battlefield, where not long ago vast armies of fiends had been fighting. She swore not to fight a war ever again and left for her home. It was not, what and were she had expected to go. She transformed the place after her image and enforced her rules with an iron hand. For some reason these rules were completely arbitrary, as were her punishments. Her palace lies in an undisclosed layer of the Abyss and her children are the Abyssal angels, deliberately twisting their Mistress' commands to bring peace."

This story or a variation thereof is usually told about the origin of the Abyssal angel, but the fact that it is usually told by tanar'ri and occassionally yugoloths do not make it any more trustworthy. Sages learned in planar history believe that the Abyssal angels are a result of a rivalry bewteen different clans od succubi. Others believe that Abyssal angels are mortal sorcresses, who where foolish enough to make deals with tanar'ri and were transformed into fiends because of some wicked clause they did not understand.

Abyssal Angel Characters

The favoured class of Abyssal angels is sorcerer. They begin as 15th level sorcerers. Most multiclass as Telepaths (see the Psionics Handbook for more information). Their level adjustment is +14. An Abyssal angel is always at least a 15th level character.
