Sure, he's terrible, but he does have that...something. Something more. Alex Krycek.  Some would say that we have to hate him.  It's prerequisite for loving Mulder...you have to hate his arch-enemy Krycek.  You have to.  It's the law.  Well, I'm taking it as my task to change your mind.

Krycek....What a babe...

X-Files Bio: [Season 2] Special Agent Alex Krycek (Nicholas Lea) moved into the role of Mulder's partner with the unexplained murders of former Vietnam veterans [Sleepless]. We discovered, however, that Krycek had a hidden agenda, as a lackey for Cigarette Smoking Man: keep an eye on Mulder and keep him from finding out information that would bring certain covert activities to light [Sleepless, Ascension]. With the disappearance of Dana Scully and the reopening of the X Files, Krycek himself disappeared [Ascension]. He reappeared, briefly, to murder Mulder's father [Anasazi], attempt to kill Mulder himself [Anasazi], and, in a case of mistaken identity, fatally wound Scully's sister Melissa [The Blessing Way/Paper Clip] but was able to make his escape after an attempt by other lackeys of Cigarette Smoking Man to eliminate him [Paper Clip]. Krycek was trapped in a missile silo in North Dakota [Apocrypha], until the Season 4 episodes  "Tunguska/Terma" where he was discovered helping a militia with a bombing. When caught, he claimed to want to help Mulder and Scully, ahem, "smoke out" Cancerman. After losing an arm to some 'helpful' Russians in the woods, Krycek was revealed to be (gasp!) working for the Russian government. He returned partway through season five in "Patient X," where we discovered his connections with Marita. Later, in "The Red And The Black," he gave Mulder some Very Important Information.

Why Do We Love Him?

1.) He makes being evil cool. Mulder is our sainted hero. He can't, technically, do anything unforgivable or terrible. He's gentle and caring and good.  That's why the X-Files needs Alex Krycek.  Mulder's anti-hero.  Without him, it'd be too cutesy.  When Krycek does something evil, it's dark and eerie and terrifiying, but it's okay for him to do because that's his job.  Krycek makes Mulder look good.  And he doesn't look too bad while he does it either. :)

2.) He's been through hell and high water for reasons unknown.  He's gotten his arm cut off, for crying out loud.  He's hung off balconies, he's almost been blown up, he's been Mulder's punching bag.  You have to feel a little sympathy for someone who can take that kind of abuse and still come back.

3.) Krycek.  He sincerely makes the X-Files something extraordinary on television.  But he isn't just a colorful, recurring character, he's someone intriguing.  I can think of perhaps only one or two others on TV that show up and make an extreme impact and disappear into the shadows as well as Alex Krycek does.  He makes you wonder...he makes you want to protect him and for his short screen time, you know he can take care of himself.  Every look.  Each crosses the other.  He's a wonderful enigma and a lovely-looking one at that.
