Part 3: An Enemy Resurrected
As Reno sat at his kitchen table having his moring coffee in his four room apartment, he pondered the events of the past fifteen years. After the fall of Shinra, the Turks believed that they would be disbanded, become only a memory. How wrong they were! The Turks were still active, in a way. They could be called upon by the new government at any time it chose, for any reason it chose. But, he knew it was not likely that it would ever happen.
“Riiiiiinggggg!” The jarring sound of the phone startled him.
“Probably some jerk trying to sell me something.” Reno muttered to himself.
But when he picked up the phone all he got was a dial tone. There was still a ringing coming from somewhere...
“Could it be?!?...” he asked himself. He walked up to the little black cell phone that every Turk was equipped with.
“Reno,” the president said. “I’ve got a job for you.”
Reno smiled that arrogant little smile he hadn’t used in fifteen years. He was back!
Elena was on her morning power walk. Old age was beginning to show on her. She needed to get rid of some extra pounds, she thought to herself. As she approached her house, she fumbled for her key.
“Damn,” she said to no one in particular. “I never can figure out where I leave the thing.”
As she looked up, she saw that she had left it in the door; easy access for any potential robbers. She merely shrugged and opened the door. She was greeted by her Collie, Max.
“Hey Max!” she called out to the dog. She noticed he was holding something in his mouth. “What’s that you’ve got there Max?” she asked him. Max had a little black phone in his mouth and it was ringing loudly.
“Hello?” she said after prying the slimy thing out of his mouth.
“Dammit Elena, what took you so long?” Reno reprimanded her over the phone.
“Reno,” she asked, “is that you?”
“No, it’s the tooth fairy.” he sneered back at her. “Elena, we’re back in business.”
Rude hadn’t been doing much with his life after the temporary retirement of the Turks. He worked the nighttime shift at the HQ for all the heads of the government departments. He really missed being a Turk, He even missed the encounters with AVALANCHE. Of course, he didn’t miss losing to them, but...
“Sigh...’ it was the first thing he had uttered since his shift started. As he pulled up to the security station to check out, he handed his ID card to the guard without even bothering to look at him.
“It’s about damn time you got here.” a familiar voice said.
Rude spun around in surprise.
“Reno?!”
“Who’d you think it was?” Reno said with his usual smirk.
“You must be getting slow in your old age.” Elena said, while hopping into the front seat of Rude’s completely black car. “I almost froze to death waiting for you, ya jerk.”
“What are you guys doing here?” Rude said, regaining his composure.
“We’re here to save your boring life.” Reno said, while hopping in the back seat. “Now, to the president!”
At the president’s office.
“What the hell’s keeping them?” the president said to no one in particular.
“Don’t worry sir,” his secretary soothed him. “I’m sure they have a perfectly good reason for not being he...”
She was cut short by Reno slamming open the door.
“Turks reporting sir!” he said in his best soldier’s voice.
“It’s about time,” the president said angrily. “What the hell was the hold up?”
“Sorry sir,” Elena said, trying desperately to calm him down. “Rude here was a little slow.
Rude simply said nothing.
“Skip it,” he said, not calmed down in the least, “We have a huge crisis in our hands.”
“We can handle it,” Reno said arrogantly, energized by his first mission since Meteor had annihilated Midgar. “Just tell us what we have to do.”
“I want you to reorganize the Shinra army.” The president said bluntly.
The three Turks just stood there in stunned silence. No one had even remotely thought he would say that.
“But, but, sir,” Elena stammered “why?”
“The worst possible reason of all.” he said wearily. “The possible extinction of humanity itself.”
“But sir,” Reno said “what could possibly threaten humanity?”
“I honestly don’t know.” the president said. “But I’ll show you something you’re not going to believe.”
He proceeded to show them a picture of the spaceship that had been discovered the previous day. They all looked long and hard at it, but they still couldn’t believe what their eyes told them was true.
“Sir,” Rude said, even he had been shaken by what he had seen, “is this what I think it is?”
“Probably Rude,” the president explained to him “it was detected by our Alternate Energy Rescources Division at 6:15 P.M. yesterday. They still can’t positively identify what it is.”
“Does AVALANCHE know about this?” Reno asked.
“They knew even before I did.” the president sighed. “But they should not pose a problem. You have presidential authority backing you up.”
“Well then, reforming the Shinra army shouldn’t be a problem.” Reno said, perked up by the news.
“You are to also reform the SOLDIER group. They will be under your direct control.” the president continued. “And, when you form this new army,it will not, I repeat, NOT be referred to as the Shinra army, is that clear?
“Yes, sir!” they all said in unison.
“Oh, Turks...” he said as they were walking out the door.
“Yes.” Reno turned back.
“Don’t let me down.” he said with a threatening tone in his voice.
“Uh, yes sir.” Reno said warily.
At Rocket Town
“I need some tea, woman!” Cid called out to Shera.
“You can wait just a little while longer!” she called back to him.
The whole gang had stayed at Rocket Town after the previous day’s events. They were just too tired to go home after nearly getting fried by the Cosmo Candle, and then learning that they were going to be visited by beings from another world.
“Hey, Cid” Barret called out to him. He had just woken up. “Where’s the remote?”
“Probably under the couch!” Shera called out before Cid could get a word out.
“Hey lookit this!” Barret yelled to the couple. “They’re broadcasting Cloud winning for the first time in the special battle.”
“Hey, really?” Cid said. “It took him long enough to pull it off, heh, heh.”
“We interrupt this program for a special announcement.” the TV blared.
“Wonder what this’s all about?” Shera said. She had finally brought in Cid’s tea.
“Hey, Cid” Barret said, “Go get Cloud and the others from the guest house! They might wanna hear this!”
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the TV man said “ in my twelve years at this station I have never reported anything like this...”
“What’s going on?” Cloud asked. He, Cid, and the others rushed in the door.
“Be quiet and ya jes might find out!” Barret yelled back.
“... the Turks have come out of retirement and are creating a new army.”
“WHAT?!” Cloud screamed “How can they do that?!”
“They are also reforming SOLDIER.” the anchorman continued.
“This is NOT happening.” Tifa said. “There is NO way this is happening. I thought we put Shinra and SOLDIER down once and for all.”
“We’ll just stop them one more time!” Cid said darkly.
“...and this is all under presidential authority!” the anchorman finished.
There was another moment of stunned silence.
“Oh man, what’re we going to do?!” Yuffie wailed.
“The only thing we can do.” Reeve said “Wait.”
“What do you mean, wait?!” Tifa screamed at him. “Wait for what, the sky to fall?!”
“Reeve’s right,” Vincent stated. “The public will handle this. There will be a big commotion and the army will be called off.”
“But why are they doing this?” Cloud asked himself.
“I think I can field that one.” Marlene said. She had just walked in the door.
“Marlene!” Barret said. “You know something about this?”
“Yes,” she replied bluntly. “The president is amassing an army in case the aliens are hostile.
“But why the Turks?” Shera asked.
“They’re the only ones who know how to create an army,” she explained. “There hasn’t been an army since Meteor hit.”
“We can handle any dumb aliens!” her father told her. “We got rid of Sephiroth didn’t we?”
“Dad,” she said, exasperated. “Sephiroth was one man. This could be an army of thousands.”
“Well, then, what do you suggest we do? Ms.: “keep information from her dad.” Barret said angrily.
“The only thing we can do,” Cloud said, “wait.”
