Red Between the Lines #5
August 1998 edition
The weather is such a boring topic that I don't normally like to talk about it. Not this year, from a violent winter to a deathly hot and dry summer. Any guesses what's causing this unprecedented weather. Well, there's no question about it: can you say "Greenhouse Effect". That's right we're doing it to our selves.
The sad part about it is if everybody did their part getting and keeping the environment in shape would be so easy. The easiest part is the 3 R's, (not reading, writing, and arithmetic) Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. First reduce the amount of packaging on products, this is largely up to manufacturers but we need to take part too. Second reuse, I think this one is rather obvious. Reuse containers, paper, wrapping, anything you can find another use for before you send it to be recycled. Lastly (that's right last) recycle, I'm sure you know about this one. You can recycle just about anything and you get paid to do it. (unless your recycling tin or something). This can even be done in comics, use recycled paper with at least 50% post consumer waste and non-toxic inks.
The hard part is things like transportation, and energy sources. Last year we had a bad blackout and it's incredible all the things we were without because there was no electricity. You'd expect no lights, TV, computer, video games, microwave, oven, cooling (we have a swamp cooler, not A/C), refrigerator. What about no water. That's right we had no water because most of the pumps in the water wells are electrical. Imagine what would happen in this country if we had no water anywhere for a week. All I can say is chaos. Most businesses would be closed, food would spoil, all the banks would be closed, there would be riot crowds, robberies would be taking place constantly, people would be dehydrating, if it was in the summer people would be croaking left and right. What does this have to do with the environment and the Greenhouse Effect, you ask? The majority of electrical power plants in this country use coal burning to start the process that makes electricity. Worse still they are the greatest cause of Carbon Monoxide pollution. The pollutant that is the chief cause of the Greenhouse Effect.
What about if you couldn't drive your car anymore. Both our transportation and energy sources are killing us. They all cause Carbon Monoxide pollution. Many factories burn coal (and who knows what else) to get things running. Every vehicle on every street in the world, every plane, and the space shuttles cause major Carbon Monoxide pollution. Changing these things will take major changes in the way things are engineered and the way the public does things.
