Story and Production Notes

A remote outpost in the final frontier, near the frontier with the Cardassians and next to Bajor, the station Deep Space Nine stands bravely to defy all possible threats. It's placed near the first stable wormhole ever found, which leads to the gamma quadrant. In the station a new crew stands high to challenge the all threats that space can offer. This series premiered in 1993, with the sixth season of Star Trek The Next Generation. It was the first Star Trek series made without the guidance of Gene Roddenberry, the Star Trek creator. Star Trek Deep Space Nine was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller.

The station was commanded by Commander Benjamin Sisko, a starfleet officer. He had recently lost his wife, when the federation fleet first engaged the borg in Wolf 359. Many starfleet ships were lost. The Borg cube was later destroyed by the Enterprise-d. In the battle, Sisko was the first officer in the Uss Saratoga, a miranda class starship. The Borg badly damaged his ship and he had to abandon it. His wife, Jennifer, was killed, but his son, Jake and he escaped. Later Sisko was assigned to command Deep Space Nine. The station was orbiting the planet Bajor, a planet which was occupied by the Cardassians for many years. After that the Cardassians retreated starfleet assumed control of the facility shortly thereafter. While the Cardassians controlled Bajor, the station was called Terok Nor, and was commanded by Gul Dukat, a cardassian who sometimes appears in the series. The Cardassians left the planet almost destroyed and the station was in a bad state of repair. The bajorans created a provisional government, and called starfleet for help. Though administered by the federation, the station fell under the jurisdiction of the Bajoran government and was subject to its laws. Major Kira Nerys was the first officer in the station, she also worked as a bajoran Liaison. She has previously been a bajoran resistance fighter, She joined the Shakaar resistance cell of the Bajoran underground when she was 12 years old. She spent most of her life fighting the Cardassians. She didn't like much the Cardassians, but she had to bury her feelings to work. The station's security officer, Odo is a shape-shifter. He previously worked in the station for the Cardassians as an investigator. He was neither sympathetic to the cardassians nor to the bajorans. He stayed in the Station when the cardassians left and continued to work there. At the beginning of the series he was the only one of his kind, but he later found where he came from. Chief Miles O'Brien was transferred from the Enterprise and worked as the chief of operations of the station. His whole family came with him to Deep Space Nine, his wife Keiko and his daughter, Molly. The systems of the station were rather strange and they were in a bad state of repair, so he had a lot of work. His wife, Keiko opened a school in the station, but later she closed it and went to work to Bajor. The station's medical officer is called Julian Bashir, a young human looking for adventures. He became the friend to Elim Garak, the only cardassian left in the station. He was exiled from Cardassia and used to work for the Obsidian Order. He opened a clothing shop in the station and worked as a tailor. The station's science officer is a young Trill called Jadzia Dax. She carried a Symbiont who gave her experiences of other lifetimes. The previous host of the symbiont was Curzon Dax, Sisko's best friend. Jake Sisko, the commander's son, lived in the station with his father. He later became a writer. Quark, a ferengi, was the owner of the station's bar. His brother, Rom used to work with him in the bar but he later left it and began to work as an engineer at the station. Rom’s son, Nog was Jake's best friend. He joined the federation and he was the first ferengi to do that.

The crew later found in the gamma quadrant a powerful society which was considered as a major threat for the federation. It was called the Dominion and the shape-shifters were the leaders of that society. Odo found his ancestors, but he decided to stay in the station. The Vorta was a race that worked in the Dominion. They controlled their military force, the Jem'Hadar, a race which was genetically created to protect the Dominion and their loyalty was assured, because they were unable to live without a drug that could only be made by the Dominion. They also considered the Changelings as gods and they would die for them, that's why they are an obvious threat to the federation.

Later Benjamin Sisko was promoted to captain. Shortly after that the klingons started a war with the Cardassians, because they thought that their government was controlled by the Dominion. Lt. Commander Worf after the destruction of the Enterprise-D, was requested by Captain Sisko to help them against the Dominion. His understanding of the Klingon culture was very useful to them. Later the klingons became enemies of the federation and a conflict was inevitable. Sisko stopped the war and the Klingons and the Federation became allies again, because Sisko discovered that the second in command of the Klingon empire was a changeling. Later the Cardassians joined the Dominion and a war broke off. The federation and the Klingons fought against the Dominion and Cardassian Alliance. The Romulans later joined the federation in the war. In the war Jadzia Dax has been killed, but the Symbiont was saved and a new host was found, the young Ezri Dax.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine's sixth season has just finished and the seventh one is the final one. The crew first showed that a Star Trek series could be done without the Enterprise. The war is still on and the only ones who can stop it are the Deep Space Nine's crew.
