The Lost Catalogs FAQ
- "$6 is too much for catalogs!":
Well, hey, they're not just catalogs,
they're 11x17inch posters. Now, mind you, I'm not comparing myself at
all to the artistic abilities of Dan Khanna, but that's what he makes,
11x17 inch posters, and he charges $10 each. I'm also not trying to
say Dan is ripping you off. The comparison I want to
make is that it costs me just as much to print these as it does Dan to
print his art, every one is straight from a digital master file, not
just a color copy.
- "Why aren't they printed 2-sided like
the G1 catalogs?":
I decided against printing 2-sided catalogs for several reasons:
- To ensure better print quality, I'm somewhat skeptical of the quality
with such heavy color printing on both sides
- If you want to look at all the toys available that year, wouldn't you
want to see BOTH sides at the same time? Instead of flip, flip,
flip... I know a lot of times when I'm looking at a G1 catalog, I'm
looking at 2 copies to see both sides at the same time.
- With one sided printing they can be framed or hung as posters without
one side being hidden and going to waste.
- It IS NOT much cheaper to do 1 2-sided print instead of 2 1-sided
prints.
- I could not think of 1 reason besides "That's the way G1 catalogs
were!" to do it 2-sided. And that's just not a compelling, functional
reason to me.
- "These aren't the as big as the G1
catalogs, and they're not even the same shape. What gives?":
The G1 catalogs measure 8.5 x 22 inches, that is 2 standard 8.5
x 11 inch sheets of paper. These catalogs are 11 x 17, that is also 2
standard 8.5 x 11 inch sheets. Except for the 1/4 inch margins
necessary for printing they are the same size.
They are not the same shape since 8.5 x 22 requires custom(re:
expensive) printing/copying while 11 x 17 inch paper is a standard
size/shape.
