Star Trek IX

Don't look now but Star Trek IX is just around the corner

This page is going to be devoted solely to disputing the rumors going around

out there about the next Trek film. Who is/who isn't in it, who's directing,

who's producing, who's writing etc etc etc.

Current Star Trek IX News

Below are the current goings-on in the upcoming Trek movie.

* {July 15} A Senior VP at Paramount (name withheld-- those of you who

surf the AOL Trek boards know who I'm talking about) who is overseeing

the development of ST9, responded to an E-Mail I sent him last week

asking him if he could confirm the Patrick Stewart fiasco (as reported

below this article) had THIS to say:

Thanks for the note. The rumor that you posted to me has no basis in

reality. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. There's

really nothing more I can add. It's totally baseless.

Now wether or not you believe me that I coresponded with this man, I

really could care less. I'll let my track record speak for itself. =)

* {July 10}PATRICK STEWART PULLS THE PLUG ON STAR TREK 9! (this was ONLY

a rumor)

Yes, yet another sensational headline. But here's the skinny: Patrick

Stewart's $12 million dollar contract for the next Star Trek feature

includes one powerful clause: he has the right to refuse scripts. And

guess what just happened...Stewart has rejected Michael Piller and Rick

Berman's outline and initial draft! So fellas, whether you subscribe to

the "Picard is a Romulan" (FAKE), "Data dies of Borg AIDS" (BOGUS!),

"Lore Attacks the Federation" (AS IF!) or the more accurate

"Heart-of-Darkness-esque" (the only one backed up by a trade magazine

blurb) rumored storylines for Star Trek 9, you might as well throw them

out the window, because Mikey and Ricky are going back to the drawing

board...

* {July 7}ST9 Info from Michael Piller

[NOTE: This information comes from the Official Star Trek Fan Club of

the UK, from an interview with Michael Piller.]

Star Trek IX (no working title as yet)

Cast - All 7 original cast members

Lore (Brent Spiner)

Bruce Maddox (Brian Brophy)

Possibility of DS9 and Voyager guest stars (strong possibility = Robert

Picardo) More to be announced

Plot tidbits -

The re-activation of a supposedly psychologically stable Lore, takes a

turn for the worse, when Lore has a personal score to settle with Data

and the USS Enterprise. Seizing control of a new and highly advanced

Federation Warship (built to fight the Borg and Dominion). The

Enterprise and crew find themselves out-matched and out-gunned in this

seemingly no-win scenario.

The film may involve a major sacrifice on Data's part

Due to the popularity of internal conflict between Picard and Worf in

First Contact, expect more in this film, especially between Picard and

Data.

Piller was careful to take all the best elements from the previous Trek

films, particularly the Wrath Of Khan.

Expect explosive action, and nailbiting tension.

* {June 8}New plot rumor going around out there.Click here for more

details

* {June 3}NEW YORK (Variety) - In a deal just sealed with Paramount,

Patrick Stewart will boldly go where no Starship Enterprise captain has

gone before.

Stewart will be paid $12 million in a multifaceted pact that revolves

around him reprising his role as Captain Picard in the next "Star Trek"

film. As part of the pact, Stewart will also be the film's associate

co-producer and get a three-year, first-look deal with Par.

Stewart received $5 million for the last film, "Star Trek: First

Contact," which grossed $92 million domestically. That's the best

"Trek" picture performance since 1986's "The Voyage Home," which

grossed $109 million.

He hasn't abandoned theater, either: he'll play the title role in

"Othello," surrounded by a black cast, which runs at D.C.'s Shakespeare

Theatre from November to January.

Meanwhile, Paramount is hard at work on the next "Trek" film, being

scripted by Michael Piller under the supervision of senior VP Don

Granger. Piller's script has been likened to Joseph Conrad's "Heart of

Darkness," providing a tour de force acting opportunity for Stewart.

"Trek" star Jonathan Frakes, who directed the last pic, is expected to

pull double duty again. Par is still working out deals with other cast

members. Brent Spiner is expected to get near $5 million to reprise his

role as Data.

* {June 2}Sci-Fi Universe Magazine noted about the next Trek film is that

Frakes in "likely" to direct.

* {June 1}Mike Piller was on Sci-fi Vortex yesterday and he discussed a

few things about the next Trek film:

1) It will involve Time Travel. (I know, NOT AGAIN but let's see how

it's going to be done before we judge too quickly.)

2) There will be a conflict between Picard and Data that will be pretty

big. (Ummmm... )

3) It will involve some old enemy who will be defeated. (hmmmm... I'm

NOT going to sceculate but I think it's going to be ______ ;) )

4) The character of Picard will be changed from the events in this

movie. (This could be interesting....)

5) There will be some type of 'good Data/ bad Data' going on in the

film. (I'm not going to go on record for saying ANYTHING here but I

think from the comment in #3 it will be.....)

6) Basically it looks like the story will revolve around Data and

Picard.

7) MP and Rick Berman are working on the story and it will 'further the

franchise.

Now there are a couple of things I would like to say. First off, I'm

not too sure that Piller was just pulling our legs. Just before Piller

spilled the beans, another one of the guests was asked what he DIDN'T

want to see in the next film. He said:

"Time travel, good Data/bad Data, another villian from the series

ruined..."

To which Piller answered: "I can't go into the specifics about the film

yet but what I CAN say is that it DOES involve time travel, good Data

bad Data and another villian to ruin from the series>"

Now when he said this, he sounded a like he was kidding but then again,

you never know.

* {May 20} The Gates McFadden report is now reversed. She is now

reportedly interested in the next story after being told that she DOES

in fact have a larger part.

* {May 5} Patrick Stewart has just signed on for Star Trek:IX. No word

yet on the size of his paycheck.

* {April 27th} Gates McFadden MAY NOT return to play Dr. Beverly Crusher.

Sources say that McFadden is "tired" of playing the blonde/red-headed

Doctor and wants to persue other projects. Berman has mentioned

bringing back Dr. Polaski (eeewwwww).

* {Early April} HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - The ninth "Star Trek" movie looks

likely to lift off during the 1998 holiday season.

No cast or director is attached to the as-yet-untitled project, but a

veteran series scribe has been hired to write the script. It will once

again revolve around the crew of the Next Generation series.

While the scribe, Michael Piller, wouldn't offer any specifics of the

new film's storyline, he promised the picture would feature a "strong

character arc for (the Starship Enterprise captain Jean-Luc) Picard."

Piller will develop the story with the film's producer, Rick Berman.

Piller began his association with Starfleet Command in 1989, joining

creators Gene Roddenberry and Berman for the third season of "Star

Trek: The Next Generation," on which he spent five seasons as executive

producer and head writer.

He went on to co-create with Berman "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," which

he executive produced for three years before turning the show over to

Ira Steven Behr. After that he co-created "Star Trek: Voyager" with

Berman and Jeri Taylor, with whom he exec produced the series for two

years.

Released over a period of 17 years, the eight "Star Trek" features have

collectively amassed about $642 million at the domestic box office.

Piller, who remains a creative consultant on both "Deep Space" and

"Voyager," recently has begun to develop what he describes as the first

action-adventure drama for the Internet.

Reuters/Variety

* {February} Rick Berman HAS been retained by Paramount to produce the

next film.

* Everyone is signed to do the film except for Spiner and Stewart who

sign on "per-film" insead of the others having signed for three films.

* NO, repeat, NO director has been set

* Both Ron Moore and Brannon Braga have both told Paramount that they

don't wish to script the movie.

Here's what Ron Moore said about the situation:

I will not be working on the next film for what are purely personal

creative reasons. Paramount is ready to begin development of the next

TNG film right now (early March), and I'm not. It's really not much

more complex than that. This is not to say that I'm burned out on the

franchise or uninterested in the characters, or sick of Trek, or

anything else. I'm just not ready to sit down and begin talking about

Picard and Data again. I'm not creatively at a place where I feel I can

do my best work on another TNG movie. Paramount and Star Trek have both

been VERY good to me and given me a huge boost to my career and I don't

want to give them anything less than my best work in return.

Plot Rumors

Below are the rumors that have been floating around about the movie. NONE of

what is about to be said here is true.

#1. The Data Swan Song movie idea: Star Trek: Transgressions

Below is an article written by who-knows-who which was supposedly an

"interview" with Brent Spiner...

* Supposedly Brent Spiner is tired of playing Data and wants to close the

book on Data. He also co-wrote the next script where Data contracts

some sort of Virus which is slowly eating away at Data. A`la the AIDS

virus. Supposedly it's going to be a tear jerker.

#2. The "Civil War" movie idea:

As reported earlier, there was a story posted here regarding a Civil War

within the Federation. Well it turns out it was an April

#3. Star Trek:Nemesis

Perhaps the LONGEST running rumor about the film. If memory serves, it's

about the Romulans or something to that effect.

#4. Star Trek:Transfigurations

Q is supposed to zap the crew into a mirror dimension more simialar to the

one Kirk and crew visited then the DS9 one, though aren't they the same?

Well anyways they meet an admiral Picard and a Captain Riker

Other Rumors:

* Adam Nimoy (son of Leonard Nimoy) is set to direct.

* Jonathan Frakes, Robert Duncan MacNeil and LeVar Burton have also

expressed interest in directing it.
