September 1st, 1993:
"IT WAS BEAUTIFUL."
And so it was.
This is a masterpiece.
The episode works on several levels, and it is so beautifully romantic. So beautifully romantic.
Characters:
|
Sargon, Henoch, Thalassa; |
McCoy |
|
Kirk; Spock; Mulhall, Chapel; |
|
Scotty |
|
Sulu, Uhura |
The Inner Lights: Temptation; The Temptation of the Flesh (as noticed by Thalassa); Advancement (of the species); the Glory of Humanity.
Best Scene: Kirk's Speech. Apart from that, all of the scenes between Sargon and Thalassa are very, very touching.
Best Moment: Thalassa stops herself, and Sargon reveals himself.
Best Actor: Shatner.
I began this episode by thinking how contrived it was, but I was soon caught up in all the action. What a story!! This is Star Trek at it's best. Amazing to see all the different temptations. Thalassa, Henock, Kirk, Mulhall, etc. are all tempted by something, even Scotty wants to see this small "wallnut" engine. Data would have suited this episode.
The Spock-in-Christie bit is predictable, but still brilliant. As is the explanation for leaving everyone out of the picture.
This is Roddenberry doing Star Trek as he wanted.
GRADE: A+
