October 16th, 1992:
AN ODD PREMISE.
The set-up here is elaborate. And very odd. I have great trouble with the use of a second Earth. There was no reason for this. It is dumb. As is the idea of time stopping in the sixties.
Dumb it may be in retrospect, but on first viewing it makes for a gripping introduction.
The episode has a great 'feel' to it, with the regulars trapped on this planet, trapped in the old-building, using out-dated equipment.
The cast a strong, even the children.
In the broadcast order, Miri is the first woman to have caught Kirk's fancy. He responds to her, but does not take advantage of her. To date he has not 'used' or 'loved and left' a single woman. Miri loved him, not vice versa. Although he did encourage her, slightly.
Yet, somehow, Kirk still gets bad press as a 'womaniser'.
Best Scene: When Kirk gets the kids to see what they have become.
Best Actor: Kim Darby as Miri.
The plague is an ugly looking thing, quite strong for a family audience.
Interesting that McCoy goes ahead and uses the formula on himself.
Nice to see some bickering among the duo.
Kirk isn't especially heroic in this one. He is mean to Miri.
It is clearly implied in this episode that Janice Rand has romantic designs on Kirk.
Overall: A fine, competent episode.
GRADE: B
