Sighisoara

Sighisoara is a lot like Brasov, but smaller, and nicer. It boasts very old buildings, especially those up in the citadel which are over 600 years old, including the birth home of Vlad Tepes (Dracula). It boasts a citadel with complete walls and toweres. It is the best preserved medieval citadel in Europe.

We got to Sighisoara right on time. On time for the Medieval Festival that is.

We spent some of our time there with two guys from Scotland, who stayed in the rooms adjacent to ours at the private accomodation. All the hotels were either expensive or fully booked. We had separate rooms, and it costs about £12 for both of us for two nights (€16.5 $20.5) in total. Pretty good huh?

We visited the citadel, searched to exchange cash, searched some more (eventually found one that was open), walked around, saw the shows, the old cobbled streets, went to some restaurants, drank the 25 pence a pint beers (€0.70 $0.85), general thigns that you do as a tourist, and the 2 days went very quickly. A very nice place where I never have been before, and I will definitely go again! :D

As fait had it, we met up with Ana's (and Tom Wells's) friends, again by complete coincidence! They were there for the festival too. :-)

Train to Transylvania. (An Iron Maiden refference tehehehe).
A very long tunnel. I couldnt hold my breath that long. This photo was actually on the way back.
Going through a pass in the Carpathians.
A very old fortified church. Probably a monastery.
A Zoom of fortified church. Note the arrow slits, and this is a church! Rough times back then.
The central park in the centre of Sighisoara.
The main square.
A statue of Romulus and Remus (the founders of Rome) and the wolf.
An Eastern Orthodox cathedral.
Another view of the main square (piata).
The keep seen from the main square.
The palace in the keep.
Another side of the keep.
The steps up to the keep. The only way up for defence purposes.
A house arches over the street.
Luke by a nice house. Getting closer to the keep.
Entering the keep.
A great view of the Clock Tower.
Inside the keep or citadel.
Lots of tourists. Lots and lots of tourists! (X-Files refference for those of you geeky enough to care. =-D )
A backstreet.
A narrow cobble street.
The yellow-orange house in the centre is the birth home of Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler, Dracula). There are lots of tourists especially since that day was the medieval festival day.
The orange house in the background is Dracula's (Vlad the Impaler's) birth home, its over 650 years old. The Clock Tower is even older.
Random people.
Another view of Dracula's house and the tower.
The Sighisoara Clock Tower.
The town hall.
A view of Sighisoara from the keep.
Another view from the keep.
Too much booze. ^_^
The entrance to the stairway. The stairway is roofed and goes from the upper keep where the town hall and the palace are to the lower part of the keep where the Clock Tower is.
The inside of the stairway. It's about 100 meters long and quite steep. And why is it that students + booze = puke??? I mean...that wood is 100's of years old for crying out loud! hehehe
