North American Sailor Moon episode 1: A Moon Star is Born

[Commercial Break.]

Narrator: A thousand years ago, our moon was home to a great civilization ruled by Queen Serenity. Everything was peaceful until the arrival of the Evil Queen Beryl.
Beryl: Ha, ha, ha, ha. First the Moon shall be mine, then the Universe!
Narrator: To conquer the Moon, Queen Beryl unleased the awesome power of the Negaforce. Although her world was destroyed, Queen Serenity's last hope was the power of the Emperium Silver Crystal and the Crescent Moon Wand.
Serenity: Only this crystal and wand can combat the power of the Negaforce. Never let our enemies get them... or the Universe is doomed-- but most of all, you must protect our dear Princess Serena, understand?
Luna & Artemis: Yes.
Narrator: Frozen in moon-beam crystals, the Queen sent the Princess and the children of the Moon to the future on Earth. Their memories lost to them all... the Queen's cat advisors, Luna and Artemis, must find the Princess so she will at last be safe. And so our story begins...

[Serena's room. Alarm clock begins to ring. Serena is startled awake.]
Serena: Ahh!! Oh no, I'm late for school again! [huff, puff...]
[Serena runs downstairs. Serena's mother is there.]
Serena: Mother!
[Serena sticks a toothbrush in her mouth.]
Serena: [with brush in mouth] Why'd didn't you wake me up in time for the first bell?!
Serena's mother: [Sigh.] I did, Serena darling, three times, and each time you said you were getting up right away.
Serena: ... and you believed me?
Serena's mother: Serena!
Serena: I gotta go!
[Serena's mother holds up a box tied in cloth-- Serena' lunch.]
Serena's mother: [almost laughing] Aren't you forgetting something, dear?
Serena: What? Hmm... oh, yeah.
[Serena grabs her lunch.]
Serena: [Partially panting.] Bye, mom! See ya' after school!
[Serena leaves through the front door, quickly.]

[Somewhere in town. Serena is running.]
Serena: [Yawns.] I'm so sleepy. Why can't today be Saturday?
[Serena arrives at the corner of the sidewalk. She here's some voices and turns her head. Three kids are tormenting a black cat in a parking area.]
One kid: Hold it still! I wanna feel its tongue!
[Muffled voices and cat sounds. The phrases "Hey!" and "It's mine!" can heard from the kids.]
Serena: Huh?... [Gasp!] Hey!! Stop it! Leave that cat alone!

[The kids take off as Serena approaches. "Let's go!" can be heard in the distance.]
Serena: Rotten brats.
[Serena examines the cat.]
Serena: You poor thing... [picks up the cat] Did those creepy kids hurt you, kitty?
[The cat has two adhesive bandages forming an "X" on its head. The cat begins to make discouraged sounds and flails its front feet.]
Serena: You're okay-- but how about I take this bandage off of you.
[Serena pulls off the bandage. Their is a crescent moon under it, open side facing up.]
Serena: Huh? Is that a crescent moon?
[The cat shoots up out of her Serena's arms. Serena gasps. The cat bounces off her head and lands on a car. Serena makes an "Um!" sound twice as the cat bounces off of her.]
Luna (cat): [thinking] Hmm... this girl. I sense something.
Serena: Uh... gee... ni-n-nice kitty. [Gasp!] Oh great, now I'm really late!
Luna: [thinking] Hmm... Could she be the one?

[At school. Serena appears to have been eating.]
Serena: Hey! Did you hear?-- There's a new Sailor V video game out! I saw it on TV.
Huruna (Serena's teacher): Serena! You need more studying and less TV.
[Huruna holds up a paper with a red 30 underlined on it.]

Huruna: There isn't any excuse for failing this exam.
[Serena is surprised.]
Serena: I failed? How can that be?
Huruna: Have your mother sign this and return it to me.

[Outside school. Serena and Molly are there. Molly is standing. Serena is sitting and slumped over and groaning.]
Molly: W-aww... Chill out, Serena. It's just one lousy test. It's not like it's the end of the world or something.
[Serena lifts her head.]
Serena: You don't get it, Molly. If my mom find out I flunked that test, she'll ground me and cut my allowance, and I won't get to play the new Sailor V game.
[Melvin arrives.]
Melvin: Hey, Serena, I heard about your test-- want me to be your tutor?
Serena: Not as much as a toothache.
Molly: You're such a dweeb, Melvin. She doesn't...
Melvin: Huh?
Molly: ... need a tutor; she needs a trip to the mall to get her mind off this. [Gasp!] Tell your mom you're at my house studying.
Melvin: You're going shopping?! What's more important than your grades? Look!-- I didn't study...
[Melvin holds up a paper with a red 95 on it.]
Melvin: ... and I only got a ninety-five. How will I ever be able to explain this to my parents?
Molly: Do we care?
[Serena begins crying.]
Serena: Maybe...
Molly: What?!...
Serena: ... he's right!
Molly: We're going shopping. By the time you get home, your mom will have forgotten all about that dumb test.
Serena: Hmm... do you really think so?
Molly: I know so. I saw some major, awesome boots on sale.
[Serena's face lights up.]
Serena: [Gasp.] We can get ice-cream.
Molly: ... Then shop some more!
Serena: Can we look for some earrings?
Molly: Good idea. We can go to my mom's jewelry store-- she's got some major cool stuff-- I mean, wicked cool! Aw!...
Serena: [in a dreamy tone] I could use a new, pink barrette for my hair...
[Melvin looks flustered.]
Melvin: Ohhh... ...
Molly: Oh... She's got all sorts of great things! You got to see it! It'll blow you away! Diamonds, rubies, emeralds...! all kinds of stuff! Even some rhinestones!!
[Stars appear in Serena's eyes.]
Serena: Rhinestones... I love those!
Molly: She's got lots of them and in lots of colors.
Serena: Pink!?... and Purple!?!
Molly: Oh, like... for sure!
Serena: [in a quivering tone] All right! What are we waiting for?! Let's go!
[Melvin watches as Molly and Serena leave.]
Melvin: [still flustered] Hehehe... Serena... hehe... beautiful... but-- a shop-aholic...

[The Negaverse. Queen Beryl is poised over some sort of crystal orb. Monsters surround her throne in a circular pattern leaving the center floor open.]
Beryl: The oracle has said it is time to attack the other dimension-- to unleash the power of the Negaforce.
Various monsters: [in moaning, monotone voices] Yes! Yes!!
Beryl: ... But to do so, I shall require energy-- yes, a great deal of energy. We shall get it from the planet Earth... So, Jadeite, present yourself and tell me of your progress there.
Jadeite: Yes, Queen Beryl.
[Jadeite materializes in the middle of the "room". He is in a bowing position.]
Jadeite: As we speak, my servant, Morga, is on the other side preparing to gather energy.
[Jadeite straightens up.]
Jadeite: The humans are weak and helpless... and they will yield to our will and then nothing will stand in the way of the great Negaforce.
[Images of Tokyo appear momentarily in Beryl's crystal orb.]
Beryl: Do not fail me Jadeite. I need their energy.
Jadeite: Yes, my queen.

[Outside Molly's mom's jewelry store. People are crowding around the front door.]
Molly's mom: Come on in! Everyone's welcome! Make me an offer!
[Inside, many people are trying on jewelry. Molly and Serena arrive. Everyone is gasping and gawking.]
Serena: Molly, what's going on?
Molly's mom: [speaking into a megaphone] Welcome, ladies! Here's your chance to own diamonds!... sapphires!...
Molly: I don't get it-- my mom's sure acting strange.
Molly's mom: ... Everything in the store must go!...
Serena: Yeah, what'd she put in her coffee this morning?
Molly's mom: Today only, everything in the store is ninety percent off.
[The room around Molly's mom appear's darker.]
Molly's mom: Please feel free to try on anything.
Molly's mom: [thinking.] [laughing.] And surrender your frantic energy to Queen Beryl and the Negaforce...
[Energy whirls appear from the various jewelry the people are wearing.]
Molly's mom/Morga: [still thinking.] ... for I am Morga, loyal disciple to the Negaverse and my jewels will drain away all your energy!
[The energy whirls seem to focus on one jewel.]
[From his dark refuge, Jadeite gloats over the situation.]
Jadeite: You have done well, Morga... ... so much greed... so much energy... Queen Beryl will be most pleased. Feed the Negaforce, foolish humans. Queen Beryl will soon triumph. Prepare them, Morga, for her triumphant arrival! Hahahahahahahahaha...! ...
Morga: [to herself] With pleasure.
Molly: Momma?!
[Morga is momentarily startled.]
Morga: [Gasp!] Oh, Molly, what a surprise!
Molly: Serena and I came to see some--
Serena: ... rhinestone jewelry!
Morga: Rhinestones?! Ha! Don't be silly, now girls... Help yourselves to some diamonds instead-- they're plenty to go around.
Serena: Diamonds?
Morga: Why, yes, any friend of Molly deserves nothing but the best.
[Molly gets a puzzled expression on her face followed by a fake smile. She's obviously embarrassed.]
Serena: I can't believe this. I totally can't believe this!
Morga: Here, Serena, would you like to try on this... ring.
Serena: Wow, would I?
Morga: It's a flawless twenty karat diamond... for you, ten dollars.
Molly & Serena: Twenty karats!... ten dollars?!
[Everyone in the store look surprised. A fat woman shoves Molly and Serena off to the side.]
Fat woman: That's mine!!
[Everyone frantically crams around the counter where Molly and Serena had been. The people scream out meaningless gibberish. Molly and Serena scramble out from between the legs of the people in back grunting and groaning from being trampled on. They stand up.]
Molly: Serena, this is way weird.
Serena: What's up with your mom, Molly? I've never seen her like this before.
Molly: I don't know...
Serena: Hmm?...
Molly: ... but I'm worried.
Serena: Hmm... This place is totally wacko, Molly. What's going on?
Molly: [Gasp!] Where're ya' going?
Serena: I think I'll take a nap before showing my mom my grade.
[Serena takes a deep breath and then sighs.]
Molly: Okay... see ya' tomorrow, Serena.

[Outside the jewelry store. Serena walks out, head down, looking somewhat depressed. She stops out front.]
Serena: Oh-no, how can I tell mom I flunked another test?
[Serena takes out the test and stare at it for a moment.]
Serena: [in an upset tone] Uhh!... [crumpling up the test] How can I show her this thing!?
[Serena throws the crumpled paper back over her shoulder. It hits a guy on the top of his head.]
Guy: Mmm!... Hey! Watch it, meatball-head!
Serena: Huh? [Serena turns around.] Serena: Oh, sorry!

Guy: [reading the now uncrumpled paper] A thirty... admirable...
Serena: [in horror] No!!
Guy: Are you stupid or just... incredibly lazy?
Serena: Uh...? [now angry] Huh! How dare you!? Give me that!
[Serena swipes the paper from the guy's hand and then storm off. Small clouds of smoke puff out from the top-sides of her head.]
Serena: Huh! The nerve of that guy. What a total jerk calling me a meatball-head!
[Serena stops and glances behind herself.]
Serena: Still... he sure is cute.
[Serena walks off. The guy removes his sun glasses and watches Serena walk away.]
Guy: Something about that girl...

[Outside the local video arcade. A poster hangs on the window for the new Sailor V video game. Serena walks by with her arms up and carrying some items behind her back looking somewhat regal and silly at the same time. She walks back and stares at the poster.]
Serena: Oh... the new Sailor V video game. Ahh...
[Serena crouches and stares at the picture of Sailor V.]
Serena: Mmm... I wish I could be like Sailor V. She's so beautiful and smart. Something exciting's always happening in her life-- not like mine.
[Luna, the black cat, pokes her head from around a nearby sidewalk sign. Serena looks at her test.]
Serena: Who am I kidding. I'll never be like Sailor V... not with grades like this. Mom's gonna to blow a gasket when she sees this.
[Serena stands up, points her head in the air and begins crying.]
Serena: Oh! Oh, what am I going to do! [sniff. sniff.]
[Serena continues lightly crying as she walks away.]
Luna: I can't believe it. This crybaby... She's the one?

[Commercial Break.]

[Inside Serena's house. Serena and her mother are there. Serena's mother looks really happy and chipper.]

Serena's mother: So... how did you do on yesterday's algebra test?
Serena: Ah... test?... in... algebra?
Serena's mother: You know-- the one you were studying for the other night with Melvin. You two were up so late at the library.
Serena: Ah... heh-heh-heh-heh-heh...
Serena's mother: Melvin's mom said he got a ninety-five and they are very disappointed.
Serena: Gee... uh... mmm! Oh, yeah... that... heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-heh... algebra test. [now upset at Melvin] Well... I... see... that is... well... uh-er...
Serena's mother: Serena, come on. Tell me. How did you do?
Serena: [mumbling] That Melvin, he is meatloaf. [out loud] Mmm...! Well!... uh... Ya' see...! uh... It's like this... I... uh... well... uh...
Serena's mother: [in a still happy tone] Let me see.
[Serena pauses for a few seconds.]
Serena: Okay.
[Serena hands her mother the test.]
Serena: ...
[Serena's mother twirled the spatula in her hand a few times.]

Serena's mother: Thirty!? You said you studied! You know what you need to do?...
Serena: No.
Serena's mother: Go back to the library!...
[Outside. The front door burst open and Serena flies out unwillingly.]
Serena: Ahh...!
Serena's mother: ... to study for next week's test!
Serena: Mother! No-o-o-o! Please! It's too late in the afternoon to study! It's bad for the bra-a-i-in!

[Back at the jewelry store. One lady doesn't look too well. Her ring and pendant
begin to pulsate with a glow from within.]
Lady: Uh... Something's wrong. I feel very strange.
[Others moan and collapse.]
Fat woman: Oh! Mercy me-- I feel as if I'm going to faint. Oh...!
[The fat woman falls over. Her pearl necklace breaks. Still moaning, others collapse. Molly, who is not wearing any of the jewelry and is fine, begins stepping backwards cautiously.]
Molly: Momma, I'm scared. What's happening to all your customers?... Momma?
Morga: Hahahahahaha...
Molly: Momma!
Morga: I'm not your mother, Molly-dear.
[Morga turns around. She has a greenish tint to her face.]
Morga: Hahahahahaha...
[Molly gives a startled gasp.]

[Serena's room. Serena is lying alone on her bed and id babbling to herself. She's almost asleep.]
Serena: Studying's so hard. It's very, very tiring. All those books... all those words... They can't be to good for a person-- how does Melvin do it?
[Serena turns on her side.]
Serena: Ah, I'm so sleepy... so tired... ahh... sleep... [Yawn.]
[Serena is finally asleep. The window opens. A figure enters and heads towards Serena. The shadow it casts is the silhouette of a cat. Suddenly, the wind blows the window shut. Serena's eyes snap open. She turns her head slightly.]
Serena: Huh?...
[Serena turns her head a little more. Luna is standing on her bed.]
Serena: Huh...? [Gasp!] You scared me! What are you doing here!?
Luna: Why, Serena, I came to see you see you, of course-- who else?
[Serena gasps and shoots to the floor. Her chin is now resting on the bed. She is surprised and staring at Luna.]
Serena: A talking cat? H-aww, man! I have been studying too hard!
[Luna clears her throat.]
Luna: My name is Luna, and I... have been searching for you for a very long time.
[Serena is still freaked out.]
Serena: Ahh... iee... ee...
Luna: You are the chosen one, and I have been sent here to guide you on the path to your ultimate destiny.

[The scene where Serena removed the bandage from Luna is reshown.]
Luna: I wasn't sure if you were the one the first time we met... but I've been watching you.

[Back in Serena's room.]
Luna: And now I absolutely know that you are... the Sailor Scout of the Moon. [Giggle.]
[Serena is staring blankly at Luna. Finally, she drops her head to the bed.]
Serena: Ahh, I'm hallucinating!
Luna: No you're not, Serena. You are Sailor Moon, and your friend Molly is in big trouble.
[Luna pops her two front legs forward and starts pushing the top of Serena's head with her paws.]
Luna: Mmmm! You have got to help her.
[Luna removes her paws from Serena's head and goes back to a standing position.]
Luna: You don't believe me. Well, all right then, I'll prove it to you. [With a grunt, Luna performs a backward somersault. A dust trail is left behind and swirls to a point where the Transformation Brooch appears. Serena lifts her head and opens one eye.]
Serena: [Gasp!] What is that?
Luna: It's a special locket, just for you.
[Serena's face lights up and she straightens herself up.]
Serena: Wow! For me? It's beautiful. [Laughs.] How should I wear it? On my school uniform...?
Luna: Serena. It's more than just a piece of jewelry. Listen to me.
[Serena is wearing the brooch on the knot of her bow on her uniform and posing in the mirror.]
Serena: Aaaa...
Luna: Don't you hear what I'm saying?
Serena: Mmmm...
Luna: Sailor Moon's sworn to defend the Princess of the Moon.
[Luna positions herself in front of the mirror. Serena finally starts to pay attention.]
Luna: Powerful evil forces have appeared here on Earth... and that special locket can help you fight them. You are Sailor Moon, and you must fight evil when it confronts you. You must not be afraid.
[Serena brings both hands to her cheeks.]
Serena: [In a cheery tone] Ya, right! Just like Sailor V...!
Luna: This is no joke, Serena. Do you hear me? This is your destiny.
[Serena becomes overjoyed.]
Serena: My destiny? I must be dreaming.
Luna: It's no dream. I'll prove it, Serena-- just repeat after me... "Moon Prism Power."
Serena: W-okay!
[Serena salutes. Then she makes a fist with her right hand and thrusts it down.]
Serena: Moon Prism Power!
[Serena throws her right hand up and fans her fingers. She transforms into Sailor Moon.]
