During the time that the Rebel Alliance attacked the first Death Star, the X-Wing was one of the most advanced starfighters in the galaxy. Although now the New Republic has much faster and more heavily armed fighters, the X-Wing has gained a place in history because of it success in many battles. The Rebels may not have been victorious at the battle of Yavin if it weren't for the X-Wing. The Incom Corporation, during its final design stages of the X-Wing, had sympathies for the Rebels and defected to the Alliance with the help of a small Rebel commando team. The design team brought with it the complete plans for the deadly X-Wing fighter.
The X-Wing obviously gets its name from the double-layered wings which are spread apart to form an "X" during combat. During normal sublight flight or in hyperspace the wings are closed and it appears as if the X-Wing has only two wings; but in a space battle, the wings move split apart; each wielding a Taim & Bak KX9 laser cannon. These laser cannons can be fired one at a time in sequence, two at a time, or all four at a time. The X-Wing is also armed with two Krupx MG7 proton-torpedo launchers that are located in the middle of the spaceframe. Each launcher can hold up to three torpedoes, and can be fired one at a time, or both launchers can fire one torpedo simultaneously. These specialized projectiles scatter proton-energy when they detonate, and allowed Luke Skywalker destroyed the Death Star with a dual shot of these weapons.
The X-Wing is flown by one pilot, and an R2 astromech droid can handle most in-flight operations, can repair electrical systems, compute hyperspace jumps, and sometimes adjusts flight performance. The cockpit is similar to that of the T-16 and other sport airspeeders so that the young recruits that were common in the days of the Alliance could easily make the transition to the X-Wing.
The X-Wing is made a tough reinforced titanium-alloy hull, and houses a powerful Chempat shield generator. Since most pilots that flew the X-Wing were not extremely well-trained, the fighter was designed to be very forgiving and could take minor hits with no change in performance or flightpath.
Like most other Alliance craft, the X-Wing has a hyperdrive (most held a GBk-585 unit) for long travels, and the R2 droid was usually programmed with 10 jump coordinates. Also, since the X-Wing has no navigation computer, the R2 handled the astrogation duties.
