The B-Wing was an extremely successful heavy attack starfighter that was designed to be able to deliver powerful weapons against a ship and also be able to take plenty of damage. It had as much firepower than some Imperial capital ships, and therefore provided the Rebel Alliance (which, at the time didn't exactly have funds to spare) with a ship that was very effective for a relatively low cost.
Admiral Ackbar (who was a Commander at the time) designed the B-Wing, with the help of some engineers from the Verpine Slayn and Korpil companies. Later the group worked together to build an improved B-Wing that carried two passengers (called the B-Wing/E), but this ship was not as widely accepted as the normal B-Wing fighter.
The B-Wing is a long, flat wing with a cylindrical-shaped cockpit at one end. Two small, folding airfoils extend from roughly the middle, making a "T" shape when they are extended. The fighter also has a very unique gyro-stabilization system that allows the main wing (essentially the entire ship) to rotates around the cockpit, while the cockpit remains stable, significantly reducing the amount of stress put on the pilot during complex maneuvers. Unfortunately, the complex system is susceptible to malfunctioning, and often quits working altogether. This leaves the wing in the same position, and makes it impossible for the pilot to do anything close to a sharp turn. However, despite the fact that it is very difficult to fly, the few pilots that are qualified to fly B-Wings grow very attached to the ships. Most pilots either supervise the maintainence of their ships or even do it themselves.
In the standard configuration, B-Wings have an ion cannon in each airfoil, and a third ion cannon at the base of the main wing. Also at the end of the main wing are a laser cannon and a single proton torpedo launcher. Just between the engine and the cockpit is another proton torpedo launcher, and a twin auto-blaster built in the front nose of the cockpit. The B-Wing also carries an advanced targeting computer that links the performance of the ion cannons and proton torpedoes, so that a lot of damage can be done against a single target quickly. There is also a low-power laser used for targeting; this laser will give the B-Wing pilot perfect directional, speed, and vector information, it also tells the enemy ship exactly where the B-Wing is.
All of these weapons were designed to be very customizable, and many pilots modify their ships weapons to suit their piloting style. A very common modification to the B-Wing's weapons is to remove the two auto-blasters and replace them with the three ion cannons, and then place laser cannons at the end of each airfoil and at the base of the main wing.
A single Quadex Kyromaster engine with four individually adjusted thrust nozzles powers the B-Wing, which is powered by a Vinop 02 K ionization reactor and four Slayn & Korpil J5-5g7 power convertors. There are also four cooling plates that dissipate the large amount of heat which comes from these powerful engines. It has a slow sublight speed compared to other Rebel Starfighters, and a Class Two hyperdrive; twice as slow as the X-Wing and A-Wing. It also has no navigation computers and only contains two sets of jump coordinates.
