Area51 isn't the only name for the Air Force facitily out in the middle of the Nelles AFB test range. Groom Lake, Dreamland, and an assortment of other names have refered to it throughtout history. Area51 has played a silent, but important part in the Cold War. From it came such aircraft as the U-2 Spy Plane, the SR-71 Blackbird, and the F-117 NightHawk.
Government projects such as Project White Light, which was a project who's objective was to, reportedly, fly a captured "Flying Saucer." (I use flying saucer because a UFO is an unidentifyed flying object. These craft were very much identified.)
If the government would have had its way, the very exsistance of Area51 would still be denied. A few years ago a lawsuit was filed against the Air Force by some workers who had gotten injured by illegally dumping chemicals at Area51. The Air Force was forced to acknowledge its exsistance. Unfortunitly, the lawsuit was dissmissed due to a legal problem. The workers, as far as I know, were never compensated. I should mention that one worker lost his life because of the dumping. The Air Force recently took control of some, formally, public land. The Air Force and several government contracted aerospace companies still conduct experements, and test fly the hottest air and space craft there today.
