The Komar were a trianic-based non-corporeal energy lifeform first encountered by USS Voyager in 2371. When a shuttlecraft passed near their nebula it was attacked and one of the shuttle occupants, Lieutenant Tuvok, was taken over by one of the Komar. The other officer on board, Lt. Commander Chakotay, had all of the bioneural energy in his brain drained away, rendering him unconscious and brain dead. Releasing the shuttle, the Komar waited for Tuvok to return with Voyager so that they could consume the entire crew's neural energy for sustenance. Although the plan almost worked, the Komar in Tuvok was found out and forced to flee just as Voyager entered the nebula. With the help of Chakotay's disembodied consciousness, Voyager was able to escape from the Komar before they could penetrate the ship's shields.
