Reuters Stories for September 30th after 7:00 PM: Which means in Sydney it is the  SIXTEENTH Day of the Olympics, if you don't want to read, please close out the window now! If you are inclined to read, please continue! Remember that the whole world has not seen or heard of some of this yet. I have a feeling this years Olympics shall be a record setting year for everyone involved. My personal favorite from Swimming is Ian Thorpe. He will do some damage to the record books. I have a definite feeling of that! Keep in mind that all grammar in these stories is UK English written. I am from the United States though and some of the spelling is not a US English way. Olympics-Modern Pentathlon-British doctor wins gold

SYDNEY, Oct 1 (Reuters) - British doctor Stephanie Cook raced past seven front-runners to win the 3,000 metres pursuit race in dramatic style and grab the inaugural Olympic gold in the women's modern pentathlon on Sunday.

Compatriot Kate Allenby crossed the line third to make it a surprise double for Britain in one of the most gruelling events at the Games which requires mastery of shooting, fencing, swimming, equestrian and running....
 

Olympics-U.S. in worst boxing result as Games end

SYDNEY, Oct 1 (Reuters) - The United States finished the Sydney Olympics on Sunday in their usual dominant position at the top of the medals table but their prestige was dented on the final day in the boxing and basketball.

The medals table at the end of 17 days showed the United States on top with 39 golds ahead of Russia with 32 and China with 28....

Soccer-Barcelona want Olympic trio to be rested by Spain

BARCELONA, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Barcelona coach Llorenc Serra Ferrer has asked the Spanish Football Federation to release Xavi, Gabri and Carles Puyol from the national under-21 squad to face Israel and Austria.

Serra Ferrer is concerned the three players, who formed part of Spain's silver medal-winning Olympic soccer team, have been selected for the squad without having time to rest after their return from Sydney....

Olympics-Samaranch closes ``best ever'' Games

SYDNEY, Oct 1 (Reuters) - IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch closed the Sydney Olympics on Sunday, declaring it ``the best Olympic Games ever.''

Samaranch formally ended the Games at the closing ceremony in Stadium Australia before 110,000 spectactors and thousands of athletes.

The 80-year-old IOC leader, who retires next year, said: ``These are my last Games as IOC president. They could not have been better. Therefore, I am proud and happy to proclaim that you have presented to the world the best Olympic Games ever.''

Samaranch started his speech with a rare joke and a tribute to the enthusiastic support of Australians for the Sydney Games....

Olympics-Moths gets in on the act at Sydney closing ceremony

SYDNEY, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Bogongs, the big, fat hairy moths that have plagued the Sydney Olympics, flooded in on the act at the closing ceremony on Sunday.

One particularly large specimen landed on the bodice of a salmon pink evening gown worn by Australian soprano Yvonne Kenny just as she was hitting a high note in her rendition of the Olympic anthem....

SYDNEY, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Tibor Benedek, who nearly missed the Games because of a drugs ban, led Hungary to Olympic water polo gold on Sunday, scoring four goals as his team routed Russia 13-6 in a final which evoked memories of the Cold War.

When Hungary and Russia last met in an Australian Olympics at the 1956 Melbourne Games, Soviet troops had invaded Hungary only weeks before to crush a revolt against communist rule and the match ended in a brawl. That year Hungary won the gold and the Soviet Union the bronze....

Olympics-Water polo-Estiarte bows out after sixth Games

SYDNEY, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Manuel Estiarte, who led Spain to the Atlanta Games water polo title in 1996, retired from the sport on Sunday after playing at six Olympics.

Estiarte, who turns 39 later this month, played 601 matches for his country in an international career spanning 23 years. He carried the flag for Spain at the Sydney Games opening ceremony....
