If your midi files sound like crap, Windows and / or Games may be using the old fashioned FM synthesis to generate music. This may do for you, but there is an alternative. Wavetable synthesis uses digital recordings of real instrument sounds that are FAR SUPERIOR to FM sounds. There are programs that emulate wavetable hardware by copying digital sounds into your computers memory and playing them back as midi instruments.
These are totally COOL.
