How the USS Desnos Earned Its Name Robert Desnos was a French poet and writer who wrote a variety of things from whimsical children's pieces to deeply emotional love verses. A Nazi high official was having dinner with some French sympathizers, and Desnos was a prisoner in one of the French concentration camps. One of the dinner party guests, a French man, said that Desnos was "a dangerous man, a terrorist, a Communist." They deported him. After the Germans surrendered, there was a Czech doctor who found Desnos, sick with typhus and still running a fever. There weren't any medical supplies, nor was there enough water in the camp. Desnos died on the 8th of June. This quote was written by Louis Simpson in "Modern Poets of France: A Bilingual Anthology." "Desnos was sent to Buchenwald and from there to other concentration camps. At Auschwitz, in May of 1944, the poet Andre Verdet, who was also a prisoner, saw Desnos standing in the rain in the crowd of men who were emaciated and dying of hunger. The crematoria was belching smoke, and the S.S. guards, as they walked by, would say, "You are all going to die." Verdet saw Desnos going from one group to another. Taking a man by the arm, he would read the lines in his hand. Then, Verdet said, a miracle happened: Desnos spoke to the men of their future with such confidence that they forgot where they were, and their faces lit up with hope." It is in honor of this man, who inspired others in such dark times, that the Intrepid-class starship was named during its christening in 2374. Its mission is not only to explore, but to unite the varied races of the universe and restore peace to the universe somehow. |
