Erek Vildebrecht

The evil you confront is mirrored in your soul...

Erek Vildebrecht is a human originally from the land of Ansalon, in a city called Tarsis. He was born and raised in Tarsis with his parents and his twin sister, Joanna. His father had intended for him to take over the family business as a merchant. Erek, however, had other plans. He intended to become a scholar. After three years of study, Erek became a librarian at the Library of Tarsis, a very successful and scholarly position.

After, a year of being a librarian in Tarsis, flames of fate, spewed from the maws of the evil Red Dragon Army, turned Erek's happy life into ashes. Erek's parents were killed by soldiers, and he and his sister were taken as slaves. The Red Dragon Highlord, seeing the usefulness of the Tarsin Librarians, forced Erek to perform research on the ritual of creating a Dracolich, an undead dragon. When he refused, the Highlord had Erek's sister beaten and raped. Fearing for his sister's safety, Erek complied with the wishes of the Red Dragon Army.

After six months of research in the expansive Library of Tarsis, Erek was "privilige" to witness the creation of the undead beast. As the dead dragon's soul entered the huge skeleton of the monster, strange mists swirled into the room. A minute later, the creators of the abomination, the Dracolich, and Erek, were on a mountain-side looking up at a fobidding castle at midnight in a strange land. Once they came to their senses, the Lord of this strange land, Strahd von Zarovich single-handedly destroyed the dracolich, and its coven of creators. Erek was spared, and was offered "employment" under Strahd as a librarian who would perform "discrete" research on various items at Strahd's request. Erek was given a library in the town of Vallaki in Barovia, and has been feared by everyone there since.

While in Vallaki, and under the "employment" of Lord Strahd, Erek has been genuinely liked by a farmer's family that he aided once, his fiance Elya, and the paladin of infected lycanthropic nature at the time, Guerrand Shadowslayer. Unfortunately, his fiance was killed one night while he was away. Erek came back to his home and saw his dead fiance lying face down in a pool of blood, and some dark looking individuals fleeing the scene that he thinks were a secret organization of Strahd's nemesis, Azalin, Lord of Darkon. This organization is called the Kargat, and they supposedly murdered Erek's fiance, or at least Strahd told him so.

It has been six years since the invasion of Tarsis by the Red Dragon army, one year as a slave librarian in Tarsis, and five as the approximate equivalent under Lord Strahd von Zarovich. Hopefully Guerrand Shadowslayer, and his companions-at-arms, will be able to help Erek change all of that...
