When Sega released the original Phantasy Star in 1988, it was truly one-of-a-kind. The first real American console RPG, vastly superior to its contemporary competition (Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy I), it quickly attracted a loyal following with its gameplay and unique blend of science and magic. With eight games thus far (and a ninth--Phantasy Star Universe--scheduled for English release in late 2006) spanning thousands of years in the Algo star system and beyond, it is the longest-running console RPG series set in a single universe, and fans have flocked to its fanfic in droves.
