Long, long ago, some guy put together a little thing called "Pong." It wasn't much--two vertical bars and a little spot on a black and white screen--but from it sprang the multibillion dollar industry we call video games. At first, the games specialized in delightful simplicity. Few people will ever forget those early classics like Pac Man and Asteroids. But as time went on and technology improved, something happened. The graphics became more detailed. Characters became more distinct. In the minds of players, the shallow, two-dimensional worlds which designers had created simply as a backdrop for the gameplay took on lives of their own. And, in time, people started writing fanfic about them.
