It's rare to find a movie that generates fanfic, for many reasons. Extremely short advertisements about the movie have to put people in the seats, which means that producers are prejudiced in the first place in favor of flashy special effects over solid storylines and characters (witness the success of the movies Titanic and Independence Day, for example). The more compressed, rushed medium of the silver screen makes it very difficult to tell a good story and tell it well; what's more, within that short time period it is extremely difficult to give the audience characters about whom people would want to read more. Thus, it is understandably rare to find much movie-based fanfic. However, when such movies do come about, fans--and fanfic writers--latch onto them with ferocity. (The posterboy of movie fandoms, Star Wars, is a perfect example of this.)
