Perhaps the most popular of many popular works released by the group known as CLAMP, Card Captor Sakura tells the story of Sakura Kinamoto, a 10-year-old girl who one day discovers a magic book called the Clow in the basement of her home--and then inadvertently scatters the magical, sentient cards that were sealed within all over the city. Since she's the one who let them all loose in the first place, she's the one who has to get them all back again...
It's the same basic formula that make Pokemon such a success--but where Pokemon often let the formula dictate the show's direction, Card Captor Sakura used the formula to frame the real meat of the story: the gradually developing relationships between a wide array of memorable and likable characters. The result was a thought-provoking, highly entertaining show for all ages, and in spite of the utter disaster that was the English dub of the series (which removed practically all the character interaction, leaving behind a pale shell of a Pokemon clone) it enjoys a strong following.
