Second Floor: Dark Visions

Kaitlyn's Rooms

Here is a synopsis of Dark Visions 2: The Possessed by L. J. Smith.

Chapter One

Kaitlyn and Co. get back to the Institute and frantically pack clothes, money, and the Project Black Lightning papers for their escape from Joyce and Mr. Zetes. Kaitlyn suddenly feels an intense need for them to get out of the house-NOW-and as they head outside, the front door opens.

Chapter Two

Rob and Gabriel fight off Joyce and Mr. Zetes as the others get into Joyce's car. They speed away. Lewis, who is from the area, directs Kaitlyn to drive east, to Oakland. When a cop pulls them over, Gabriel knocks him out with a psychic blast, and they run from the scene with him in the lead. They end up in a very bad neighborhood, where a man starts to come after Kaitlyn.

Chapter Three

The man stops when Rob puts an arm around Kait. They settle for the night in a vacant lot. Gabriel stays up to keep watch as the others sleep, sneaking away to take energy from an unsuspecting woman on the street.

The others dream of the peninsula again. They look around for clues that may help them find it. There are piles of rocks which Anna finds vaguely familiar. They shout, "Who are you?" and each hears a different answer: Griffin's Pit, Whiffen Spit, etc. Gabriel returns and they discuss their plans. Gabriel announces that he's hotwired a car.

Chapter Four

While Rob and Gabriel argue over using a stolen car, Kaitlyn realizes they should go to Marisol's family, who live in Oakland and may be willing to help them. Kait wonders if the crystal has done Gabriel permanent damage, beyond the scar over his third eye.

At Marisol's house, her brother Tony feeds them and gives Rob and Gabriel new clothes. After telling them about another assistant who tried to leave and was "silenced," he gives them some groceries and Marisol's van.

Chapter Five

Gabriel insists they get out of California as soon as possible, to escape the CYA. Kaitlyn sketches as they head north on I-5. Her mind drifts and she unconsciously draws a picture of Gabriel with an eye in the middle of his forehead. She lies to the others when they sense her concern about it.

After changing drivers, Kaitlyn drifts off and wakes up to find the van unnaturally cold. Lewis is unresponsive, and as the others notice odd sounds and smells in the van, Lewis attacks Gabriel, who's driving. When he stops, he says he'd been dreaming and saw a person there.

They stop for the night at a rest stop in Oregon, where Gabriel insists on sleeping outside the van. Kait and Rob share the back of the van, and Gabriel radiates feelings of having been cheated of something. He can't sleep, and, plagued with thoughts those he's killed, he goes in search of someone to take energy from.

Chapter Six

Kait wakes up to see images of gray people leaning over her. When she manages to touch them, they disappear and she is left with cold air. She senses Gabriel isn't outside the van and goes to look for him. She finds him, about to drain the energy from the unconscious girl in his arms. She tries to reason with him, and he begins to drain the girl in spite of her attempts. She tries to put her third eye to his, the way Rob had shared energy with her before. She misses and kisses him instead.

He's shocked into stillness and she moves their foreheads in contact instead. As he takes her energy, they are drawn closer together. He stops the contact when she says she cares about him. He says that he has to do this now because of the crystal; it intensified his need for energy. Kait suggests telling Rob so that he can help.

Chapter Seven

Gabriel threatens Kait until she agrees not to tell the others about his need for energy. In the morning, they find a slug-slime like substance on the outside of the van. They set out toward the coast, where they decide they're still not far enough north. There is tension in the van as they discuss the theories of the origins of vampires, which sounds exactly like Gabriel's problem. He is upset by the feelings of revulsion the others send through the web. They begin to argue, until Rob stops the van and tells Anna to get out.

Chapter Eight

Kaitlyn realizes how irrational they're all being and tells Anna to stay. Kait recognizes the same smell, coldness, and anger from the time Lewis attacked Gabriel, and the night before when she saw the gray people. Rob says it's a psychic attack. Mr. Zetes must have gathered more psychics.

They stopped for the night in Cannon Beach. As they eat dinner, Kait offers to help Gabriel as she did before, but he tells her to leave him alone. After they're all asleep, he leaves to find an energy donor, refusing to use Kait. She wakes up and goes looking for him. When she finds him, she backs him into a wall and offers herself again.

Chapter Nine

As Gabriel takes her energy, Kait tells him she trusts him, and he says "thank you." She realizes that being this close to him could be dangerous-emotionally. They go back to the van, which is in the midst of a psychic attack. They visualize light surrounding the van, which dispells the attackers.

As they drive to Washington the next day, Kait decides to talk to Gabriel later, and thinks about how much she's expecting from the people in the white house. Kait draws a psychic picture of a goat with red eyes and takes over the driving. Soon, that goat appears in the road. Kait swerves to miss it, and they go off the road.

Chapter Ten

The van lands in a creek. After they get out, Kait explains what happened and they realize it was another attack. They decide hitchhike to Anna's parents' house in Suquamish. They can't follow the coast anymore. Finally a car comes that stops for them. Kait and Gabriel are suspicious, but the rest think it's okay, so they get in. The girl introduces herself as Lydia.

They arrive at Anna's, surprising her family. Anna's mother invites Lydia to dinner, and then Anna's parents ask what's going on.

Chapter Eleven

Gabriel takes Lydia for a walk to get her out of the room, and the others explain what's happened. Mrs. Whiteraven recognizes the rock piles as "inuk shuk," something they saw on Vancouver Island once. They want to go to the island; Anna's parents say no. Lydia spends the night, despite Kait's protest that she's not one of them. Kait still doesn't trust Lydia. She forces a drawing to tell her more about Lydia, and realizes that she's with Mr. Zetes.

She confronts Lydia and forces Lydia to admit she's a spy. She is Mr. Zetes' daughter. He sent her to pick them up if the accident didn't kill them. She says she hates her father and wants to get away from him. She also says he wants them to go to the police, knowing he can bribe them. They decide to go to Vancouver Island.

Chapter Twelve

Those under eighteen must have a letter from their parents to cross the border. Lydia is the only one actually eighteen; the others will have to fake it. As the customs officer is checking them, his walkie-talkie goes on the fritz, thanks to Lewis' PK. They ask about inuk shuks in several places, but no one knows where to find them. They drive east, not finding anything that seems right. They head back to Victoria and get a motel room. Kait tries to stay up to catch Gabriel, but she wakes up to the sound of the door shutting. Lydia is missing as well.

He is by the waterfront. He tells her to leave him alone. She wants to tell Rob about his problem, so he can help, but he refuses. She offers herself again; he can't resist her. His feelings for her have deepened into love. She tries to resist loving him back. They are interrupted by Rob. He thinks she's cheating on him, and runs off. Kait is caught between them, but finally runs after Rob. He finds her explainations hard to believe.

Chapter Thirteen

Lydia, who had been watching in the shadows, backs up her story. Rob says Gabriel can no longer take Kait's energy. They tell Anna and Lewis about Gabriel. They tell Lydia what they're looking for and set out again. At another museum, they're overjoyed at being given a map to Whiffen Spit. When they find it, Kait cries, and they build an inuk shuk. Rob and Gabriel come to a sort of truce. Anna uses her power to see the way to the white house through the eyes of a bird. There, they meet a woman named Mereniang, who invites them into the house, all except Gabriel.

Chapter Fourteen

One of the rules of the Fellowship is that no one who's taken human life can enter the house. The others refuse to go in if Gabriel can't, but he tells them to go ahead. Inside, Kait thinks about how old and magical they seem; not at all what she expected. They go out to the rose garden. There is a perfect crystal standing in the fountain. Gabriel is there. They meet Timon, the leader, and LeShan, the man from the airport, who says he'd tried to warn Kait.

Timon explains the Fellowship. Their ancient civilization fell apart when people joined the Dark Lodge, using the powers of the giant crystals for evil. The perfect crystal can supply Gabriel with the energy he needs, but it's nothing like taking Kait's. The Fellowship can offer them shelter, but they can't stop Mr. Zetes or break the web.

Chapter Fifteen

The descendants of the Fellowship's race are the modern psychics. Rob says they have to fight Mr. Zetes. Kait offers to have all of them stay with Gabriel in the toolshed. He declines, and says goodnight, surprising her.

Later, Gabriel puts the man who is guarding him into a coma and waits for Lydia to meet him. He has changed his mind since coming to the Fellowship, reverting to his old, bitter self.

Kait wakes to pandemonium, as they discover Gabriel and Lydia gone and the guard near death. It must've been Lydia, Gabriel couldn't have done it after all they'd been through. There is another psychic attack. The members of the Fellowship try to sustain the crystal, but realize it's futile. It shatters, knocking everyone out.

Chapter Sixteen

At Timon's order, LeShan gives Rob a shard of the crystal. Rob tries to heal Timon but he dies anyway. LeShan organizes those who are left. Kait's group is welcome to stay with them in their new location. They decide they have to fight Mr. Zetes, and, most importantly, help Gabriel. They are going to destroy the evil crystal with the shard from the perfect crystal.
