The moon is a prominent figure in almost every culture. The Islamic faith has their calendar based off of its fickle form. Scientists have conquered the pull of the Earth to step upon it. People believed that if you were bitten by a wolf or dog on a full moon, that every full moon that day hence you were cursed to change into a werewolf, craving human blood. In fact, luna is the latin word for the moon and that also happens to be the latin root for the word lunacy. Ever notice how people seem just a bit...crazy on the night of a full moon??? As the witch has a magickal use for its changing face.
A spell is most powerful and effective when worked through a phase completely, such as, from the New Moon (which is just after the Dark Moon) to the Full Moon or vice versa (the Waning Moon, beginning right after the Full Moon, to the Dark Moon).
Another tip is to combine a moon phase with an appropriate "of-course moon". That is, a moon which is under an astrological sign. (A moon is "void-of-course" when it is not under any sign.)
I am impatient, so I want what I want and now. Therefore, I might work a given spell when the moon is aspected in Aries. A further example would be, I want to neutralize a work situation and quickly. I would work my spell on a Dark or Waning Moon which is "Aries-of-course". Be cautioned that when working under Aries, one should be careful because this is a volatile sign. Things may get hectic and unpredictable before you know it.
The moon's course changes quite frequently, never lasting longer than a few days. You can find out what course the moon is in by looking it up in an almanac. Llewellyn's Magickal Almanac or calendar is especially useful for this.
You don't have to do this much of a rig-um-roll to cast a spell, in fact, it is perfectly OK to just do it on the day or night of the most proper phase of the moon. Below I have a description of what each phase correspondes with.
Phase | Correspondence |
---|---|
New Moon | Beginning endeavors, starting new projects, creating something new. |
Waxing Moon | Adding strength to an already existing spell. Spells to achieve or fulfill, spells to gain, can all be done during the waxing moon. |
Full Moon | Bringing a spell to final fruition (after having worked on it for the duration of the Waxing Moon). To bring the greatest amount of power to a spell and the quickest results. |
Waning Moon | Used for spells to get rid of something. May be a state of mind (ie: bad habits, negative mind-sets/attitudes), a physical condition (ie: reducing obesity or an illness), a situation (ie: to break-up, get rid of a stalker, neutralize a bad work situation), or a person (this, I leave to your imagination and conscience). This moon is best for decreasing. |
Dark Moon | The Dark Moon will help neutralize/cleanse/purify any situation. See above "Waning Moon". |
