Divination

She walked through a fog, searching for something...or was it someone. Out of the fog before her, she saw a lovely child, a little girl. She felt a strong attatchment to this child as if...as if it were her own...no, that is silly, she isn't even involved with a man to... Out of the fog stepped another figure, a tall, cheerful faced man who came and scooped the child up into his arms and raised her high. Child in arms, he smiled at the woman as he walked towards her. He kissed the woman on the lips and offered her the little girl...An alarm clock sounded and the woman rolled over to turn it off.

Witches love to have an idea what lies in store for them...helps them decide what spell to use, when to use it, if a spell will work as intended, if they even need a particular spell. There are so many ways to take a peek at the future it can almost seem overwhelming.

Isn't it better to just let what may be, be? *scoffs* If witches believed that, if anyone, no matter what belief system believed that, there would not be spells or prayers. In fact, you wouldn't bother to play the lottery or go to college, if you were meant to be rich or educated, you would be born that way. Bah. Now you know what I think of that.

Below is the Square of Mercury from Paul Husons' Mastering Witchcraft to help you with your divination. It is a type of charm to store energy and be used to help focus your mind towards divination.

The Square of Mercury is a magick square. Magick squares are sometimes referred to as "psychic telephone numbers". These squares have the quality of adding up to the same number, whether added vertically or horizontally. They are used as a sort of guide-light or signal for certain subconscious powers/energies to come into play.

To use the Square of Mercury, you need:

  • pen
  • ink
  • salt
  • distilled water
  • divination incense
  • a square of quality drawing paper or parchment
  • Ideally, the water will be purified or spring water, the salt will be sea salt, and the pen and ink will be bought or made for this purpose or they will be the ones you habitually use ONLY for your magickal purposes. It is best if the materials you use are as close to their natural/perfect forms as possible. You will find suitable divination incenses in Scents .

When you have gathered your materials, mix the water and salt and start burning the incense. Take the square of paper and purify it by sprinkling it with the salt-water and holding it over the incense smoke. Then draw a square grid with sixty-four compartments in it and commence to write the numbers in the boxes, in the placement shown above, beginning from the lowest number (1) and ending with the highest (64). Do this deliberately, concentrating on the shape of the numbers and the curves/angles of the lines. As you write each number, chant to yourself a short invocation to Mercury. This invocation is something you must contrive for yourself. It can be anything from "Mercury, be propitious to me" to a simple listing of his names from different cultures. After reaching the last and highest number seal the talisman with the words "So Mote It Be". The original spell itself adjures that the talisman be also sealed by drawing three crosses in the air with your right forefinger, just above the paper, but because this has distinctly Christian connotations (even though it was supposedly appropriated by the Christian church from the earlier pagans) I suggest that this part of the seal be optional according to your tastes and beliefs.

Your Square of Mercury is now charged. Whenever you wish to perform a divination you need only take the square in your hands and repeat the process by looking at each number in it's numerical order while chanting your invocation of choice--sans the sealing at the end. You must perform the actual divination with the square on your person or prominently displayed in your place of work. When it is not in use, keep it in a new box or wrapped in clean linen/silk cloth (as you should with all of your magickal artifacts).

An important thing you must remember (otherwise the charm won't work) is that the magick square must conjure a mental image that links your divinatory work with one of Mercury's traits or even an image of Mercury himself. You might want to check out a book on mythology that outlines Mercury's character traits. Greek mythology is one of the more widely known versions of Mercury (known as Hermes) or you could try Roman mythology as well as Egytian (Thoth) and Nordic (Odin) mythology.
