Son to Father by Richard D. Asplund Jr.
I woke up one morning and I realized
I’d been missing something my entire life
I couldn’t put my finger on it, but suddenly I knew
Dad it was you
We have almost never seen eye to eye
And to admit our feelings at times we’d rather died
And though it serves no reason or Rhyme
We are bound till the end of time
Though it is hard to see, we really are the same
We’re just playing different sides of the game
You may have always been there for me
But you stood in a place I could not see
Instead of standing by my side
Depriving me of a place to confide
Anger was our most common trade
But it was weak and always did fade
Though we never did set right
Everything destroyed in our fights
Till the day we die and beyond
We share an unbreakable bond
There is no blame to be laid
We both claim the mistakes we have made
And no matter how hard we tried
There was always one thing we were denied
I a father and you a son
But despair has not yet won
Time is not yet gone
But it does forever march on
No matter what we say or do
One thing will always ring true
It’s something we always knew
In each other’s hearts echo the words “I Love You”
