Bloody Valentine

An explination of Vincent's dreams as created by me, the author

All right, this one should be pretty straightforward for anyone who has any familiarity with Vincent’ character in Final Fantasy VII. As you may or may not know, he considers himself a tortured soul who is haunted by nightmares representing his sins of the past, when he either failed to act and certain points in his life or acted the wrong way.

Knowing this, you are ready to begin reading my analysis of Vincent’s dreams.

Part 1- the Angel Lucretia's statue

This one will probably be the most straightforward and easiest of all the dreams that Vincent has. After this, they get much more complex and you may or may not have more trouble figuring out what I’m getting at with each one, depending on how much you think like me.

First off, we’ll start off with the whole concept of Lucretia being an angle. If you can’t figure that one out then go play Final Fantasy VII again and make sure you keep Vincent in your party the entire time because you obviously missed something major! Vincent adores Lucretia more than life itself. She was his one connection to his life before Hojo experimented on him. He believes that he she is the one thing that can complete him. I chose the angel because it represents the same thing that Vincent sees Lucretia as, something beautiful in a chaotic world.

Simple, no?

Let’s continue. It gets more complicated.

Now on to the concept of Lucretia being set in stone.

This one may not be as clear to you so don’t worry if you can’t understand the logic behind it.

I chose her to be set in stone as a statue because stone is everlasting. Now don’t you dare e-mail me telling me ‘well technically, stone can be weathered like Cleopatra's Needle in New York City’ and crap like that. For all intents and purposes, stone represents longevity in this fic. Think about it, the pyramids have endured for thousands of year. Again, don’t remind me that weather played a factor in that, and stuff. You have to use your imagination for this kind of stuff, so for the last time, no smartass e-mails.

Anyway, Lucretia’s set in stone to represent the fact that she will be around one way or another for a long time. Which leads me to the next section…

Now for Jenova being played out the way it was. I specifically played it out as a weed so it would be destructively compatible with the Angel Lucretia’s statue. Plants have the destructive power to destroy rocks. Tell me you’ve never seen a tree growing out of the middle of a split rock or grass growing out from between cracks in the pavement. I won’t bore you with the scientific explanation of why they can do this here, so unless you want to look it up, you’ll have to trust me on this.

Assuming that you’re still here and not attempting to get to your library or biology teacher to disprove me on that, then here goes:

Assuming you actually paid attention to the chapter, then you know that Jenova is what ultimately destroys Lucretia, so it was fitting for Lucretia to portray Jenova to Vincent in that way, as a parasite, a plant that was destroying the statue by merely growing. If you can’t see the logic behind that, well that sucks for you now then, doesn’t it?

Now for the whole idea of Lucretia being luminescent. This is where my logic, or lack thereof, gets a bit more bizarre, so bear with me on this.

You probably had to really be paying attention to what Vincent was thinking towards the beginning of the fic, but at one point he says that everything he comes into contact with he ultimately ends up destroying.

I represented Lucretia’s life force as the glow that Vincent saw. First off, Vincent was attracted to it, drawn to it in the same way he was drawn to Lucretia.

Secondly, he was burned badly by Lucretia’s glow. Vincent was always a very stoic person, even before the ‘incident’ with Hojo. He would no doubtedly feel humbled by someone as carefree as Lucretia, whose life is not governed by the typical stereotypes that went along with Vincent’s trade. Namely, the idea that Turks are supposed to be ruthless, emotionless killers who follow commands to the letter without question or hesitation. Lucretia, with all of her knowledge, would be a very commanding presence for someone in Vincent’s position. Although he wouldn’t be stupid, he would still most certainly not be able to hold up a scientific conversation with her.

Thirdly, as I said before, he believes that everything he came into contact with is destroyed. He’s a very depressing person, but we all love him nonetheless. Anyway, in case you didn’t notice, as soon as he laid his hand upon the statue (which by the way was not cold for any reason besides that stone is usually cold. It was her life force that generated the heat, not the statue itself) the glow immediately began to subside. Now obviously this was because she was dying thanks to Jenova, but since he happened to show up at that exact moment, he would feel as though it were his fault.

That’s pretty much it, really. Questions, comments, and constructive criticism will be welcomed wholeheartedly and answered ASAP so if you think I missed something or still feel in the dark about something, feel free to send me an e-mail. Flames will be ignored.

I will say this before I go, though. This was just a small taste of things to come. The very tip of the iceberg if you will, only if you will. After this, they get much more complex, so if you want to ignore these analyses from now on and just sit back and enjoy the ride, I promise it will not subtract anything from the story. If you get curious about something, then there will be one of these posted for every chapter that there is a dream in.

Hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing this, because there is so much more to come…
