COMING IN FROM THE RAIN Uptown San Francisco(#1343 RLntN) This part of San Francisco is one of the few areas left mostly untouched by the weather of the last decade. The steep, curving roads are still lined with beautiful old houses, some of them almost a century old. Flower pots grace the roadsides and are cultivated meticulously. Some of the streets even show the old brick roads underneath. Occasionally, you see one of the famous cable cars pass you down the streets, and people hop on and off them at random. Fisherman's Wharf is visible in the distance, and people will give you directions to Lombard Street if you ask. The scent of the flowers mingles with the smell of fresh-baked sourdough and the slight fish scent from the Wharf. A weathered old man passes you with a fruit cart. It's covered with fresh strawberries, oranges, bananas, and other tasty items. Nicole Andrews exits out of her apartment complex, making certain she's bundled and warm. She lifts her hood as she steps out from the shelter by way of the terrace roof to avoid the streaking down rain. her free hand moves down to grasp the garabage bag as she moves towards the bins out near the parlking lot. Even as one draws closer to the bins.......it's easily noticable they've been closed in order to keep the rain out. Of course it's hardly a difficult matter to lift the tops to deposit one's garbage. It's then that a flash of golden becomes visable across the street. Underneath an abandoned trailer actually. Normally one wouldn't think much of it.......but the whole trailer appears to be.....shaking? Nicole Andrews makes her way to the bins and dumps the garbage bag. She swerves to head back inside when...something...or rather someone...catches her eye. SHe stands still for a moment, watching the form as it darts underneath a trailer. She blinks. Then, without a second thought, she makes her way to the sidewalk and waits until it's safe for her to cross the street... Drawing closer reveals only one thing out of the ordinary. The trailer if vibrating.....very thoroughly and very steadily. As one glances under....the occupant becomes visable. Steeljaw.....having before been literally the image of eternal calm and pride.....has now been reduced to a wet, shivering and extremely frightened looking shell of his former self. Even his respectable size for a lion seems to have shrunk. Now he appears very miserable.....and in the way that he stares wide-eyed at the water pooling on the cement nearby......it isn't hard to figure out he's suffering from a case of pure....stark....fear. Nicole Andrews widens her eyes a bit as she draws even more closer. She picks up her pace and strides towards the trailer...ignoring the freezing rain as it streaks down...for now. She bends down...immediately and thoughly drenching her jeans from the rain water. "Steeljaw?" she calls out...crawling underneath...to join the lion... Steeljaw barely even reacts to Nicole's voice. Shivering so heavily.....it's almost unnoticable in the way he tilts his optics in the young woman's direction....and even then....he dosen't seem to really see her either. It's as if he stares right through her......water still running down his form from the cracks that it gets through on the old trailer. It runs in steady streams down his sides......and visibly seems into his hip joints and knee joints especially. His body was never designed for a wet environment......and right now especially....it is beginning to show why. Nicole Andrews flickers a glance towards the outside...noticing the traffic and the populace which carries on even in this downpour. She moves a little more closer towards the Autobot...this time with care. "Steeljaw, look at me. Can you...even hear me?" she asks quietly. Steeljaw actually whimpers slightly.......it's not much.....but its an answer of some sort. Fear pushes highly throughout all his other emotions....but even somewhere in back....there's anger at himself....and shame. He tries to fight against it......but he simply can't. "R...r...r..." he mouth moves....trying to speak but nothing else comes from his vocal unit. He visibly winces with every new drop that strikes him..... Nicole Andrews narrows her eyes trying to determin what the lion is meaning...until she recalls that the rain had started recently. Too recently in fact. Since there's nothing else around that might place the lion in such a state she can only guess it may be that. But she doesn't ask him any more questions at the moment. Nor does she show any outward signs of this being comical. "Steeljaw...you think you could transform into your tape mode? I can take you into my place where you can dry off for a bit if you like." Steeljaw stares at Nicole for almost a full minute......his optics dimming as he tries his darned hardest to concentrate. Even pulling up enough mental courage to pull something this routine is a Herculean task. The very thought of the water shifting and running further into his joints is all but horrifying. His body shifts nonetheless.....grinding for a moment on itself.....then....with a rather startling snap of movement.... Steeljaw shifts.....then suddenly folds into the shape of a casette tape. Nicole Andrews sighs in hidden relief as she takes the tape within her hand. she's somewhat wet herself. However...the inside of her coat isn't. She unzips the winter coat and deposits the tape inside an internal pocket before zipping the coat back up. "Hang on. It won't take long..." she tells him and she crawls back from underneath the trailer...bracing herself formthe action of retracing her steps... Golden cassette dosen't offer any words......he remains eerily quiet. But even as Nicole picks him up.....he's still shivering....even in tape mode. Nicole Andrews pauses as she reaches the edge of the trailer...and then waits until the street is semi-clear before making her way across. Not too bad. Afterv all...she's done it within rush hour traffic. Crossing the street that is. So...why not now? Upon returning to her apartment she slips inside and travels up the stairs. Upon arriving at her door she unlocks it and enters... Sycamore Apartments After going through the tiny lobby and up a level of steps, you come to Apartment 207#. This is where Nicole Andrews lives. Her apartment itself is modest. Decorated within a feel for "farm & country" by way of it's colors and wooden furnishings it may seem slightly out of place here in the city. There is much within the living room which reveals aspects of Nicole as you enter from the way the room is arranged, to it's contents, and how it's kept. From the various books neatly kept on the bookshelves to the three Precious Moments Dolls...one dark haired boy a dark haired girl, and red-headed girl sitting together on a small couch. Adjacent is the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and of course, her office/painting studio. Nicole Andrews takes out the casette from her pocket and heads towards the kitchen. After laying her coat against one of the chairs she retrieves sveeral olf dish rags and starts trying to dry the tape off rather gently. But even now she can feel him trembling. "Sleeljaw, we're inside now." Golden cassette remains trembling nonetheless. Even if it isn't the effect of the rain from before....its now the simple fact that he was out in it to begin with. He dosen't appear to be shivering as violently as he was outside however. "N..n...n..." he tries to speak again......but still can only manage the first letter..... Nicole Andrews tries to dry the casette off th best she can. "You alright? Are you hurt?" she questions in sudden concern. She would call for help if he was indeed injured. But who *could* she call?" ANother clap of thunder is heard from outside. As a flash of lightening illumiates the surroundings briefly the lights flicker... Golden cassette's shivering seems to finally settle down.....until he's back to remaining still. Finally...his voice works its way through.....but its very weak.....and struggling heavily to remain steady. "N...no....I'm...allright. My...internals....n..n..need to be...d..dried...." "Is there a way I can help or...are your sytems able to...do that for you?" the young woman questions... Golden cassette shivers again for a moment. "I....I must......transform...." Nicole Andrews nods and sets the casette down gently within the center of the living. She steps back to offer him room. The tape shudders....then suddenly expands into the form of a golden colored lion. Steeljaw transforms in a small splash of water......eliciting another shiver from him. He wastes no time in releasing several catches along his flanks.....which lift the armored coverings away from his robotic internals. A small trickle of water begins to flow out......but inside.....it's visible how it's literally pooling. He shivers again.....clenching his optics tightly as he tries not to think about it. "I....I had feared this...." Nicole Andrews nears the lion again and places a hand on his shoulder. Maybe we should try this in the bathtub. Some of you might fit. You can...do what you have to in there. Alright?" Steeljaw nods slowly......starting to regain a bit of his composure. But the constant 'slosh' inside everytime he moves is a constant reminder. "A....all right..." Nicole Andrews keeps her hand on Steeljaw's front shoulder for reassurance. The bathroom isn't that far. And...the arpartment seems to have slightly wider doors than most. But then...it is an older building. She moves in front of the Lion and then to the side after entering the bathroom. SHe removes the towels and pushes the curtain aside for him. "See...if that helps any..." she offers somewhat nervously...trying to calculate his size tith the tub.. Steeljaw peers at the bathtub for a long moment.....before the idea manages to surface through his fog of the previous fear. Slowly.....he turns himself around....so that he can sink his haunches into the tub. Angling his body downwards slightly.....he allows the water to rush completely to that end. Even as the miniature waterfall occurrs.......he shudders again.....clenching his optics tight a second time. Nicole Andrews stands by the lion, her hand resting against his armor ans she simply watches. She doesn't offer much verbally at the moment. Steeljaw certainly gives a new definition to the word 'waterlogged"... Steeljaw peers back as he releases a final armor catch....the water now running from his knee joints in a steady torrent, splashing into the tub and swirling as it reaches the drain. Nicole Andrews remains silent as the processes works itself through...watching as the water cascades from the mechanaoid's internals to disappear into the inner workings of the apartment's plumbing..." Finally the water seems to taper off to thin streams....and Steeljaw appears to become somewhat more......calm. Nevertheless.....his drearyness hasn't left in any way. "Now.....my only concern....will be my internal structures......" Nicole Andrews questions, "How...are they checked?" Steeljaw shakes his head. "There is no need to check them....but.....they are thoroughly drenched." his optics shimmer a second time....as he appears to swallow. "If....if they are not tended to....." Nicole Andrews nods slowly. "How exactly are they tended to? You need a lift to the city?" Steeljaw shudders again at the thought of going -back- into the storm.......even if this time it was in a protected pocket. "They must be dried....." Nicole Andrews sighs. "Steeljaw...I can only help if I'm told what to do.. At the moment I don't know how to help. Please, tell me."" Steeljaw blinks...then nods. "I....I'm sorry Nicole...." he says truthfully. "Anything.....that will dry them out will work....do......" he blinks as an idea occurs. "A hair dryer....." Nicole Andrews heads a few steps towards the sink. She opens the cabinet there and retrieves her hair dryer. She looks it over and frowns. "I have a portable heater..." she offers... Steeljaw nods again somewhat quickly. "That.......could work too." by now he seems to be getting more on the calm side........due to the fact that he knows its only a matter of time until he can be dried out properly.... Nicole Andrews states, "It's in the studio. Meet you back in the living room?" She only hopes he can remove himself as easily as he plased half his form in the tub. Steeljaw scrabbles a bit......but makes note NOT to extend his claws for purchase.....as he instinctively wants to. A bathtub surface may be solid and all.....but even he could make short work of it in seconds....by accident. And he dosen't want to wear out his welcome anymore than right now. As he pulls his rear from the tub......he speaks again. "I.....apologize for all of this." the guilt and shame from before now starting to set in. "I.....I do not wish to burden you with such a trivial detail....." Nicole Andrews edges towards the door...watching the lion carefully as he dislodges himself. "I did the laundry this morning. Believe me...you're not interrupting anything." Steeljaw slowly moves out of the bathroom after Nicole has moved as well. "Well.......yes. But.....this is something that I should not have to bother you about." he says quietly......his head lowered. If ever a lion could look ashamed of himself.......this is a perfect example. And Steeljaw is one VERY ashamed cat at the moment. Nicole Andrews leans against the doorframe for a moment. "Hey, you didn't. I asked you to come...remember?" she asks as if in a reminder. Steeljaw blinks....then nods. "Yes.....true...but.....I shouldn't have overreacted really. It's....not that.......serious....." Nicole Andrews raises a brow. "Personally, I don't know too many people who like getting their shoes filled with water...much less anything else." She slightly turns and nods behind her. I'll have that heater out in a sec. Kay?" And with that she disappears within the hallway and into a the second bedroom-changed studio. Steeljaw sighs and watches as Nicole moves into the other room. With a slow, deliberate motion....he chooses an open spot on the floor to ease himself onto.......easing his head onto his front paws as he stares at the wall quietly...... Nicole Andrews reappears with the heater minutes later. She sets the device down gently. "You sure you're alright?" Steeljaw hmmms quietly.......and glances over. "Er....yes. I will be......" Nicole Andrews nods and sets the heater down by the robotic cat and turns it on. "High or...Med. High?" she questions idly. She doesn't quiet know how this is done? Steeljaw says quietly. "Er......whatever is the highest setting...." Nicole Andrews nods and sets the appropriate controls. In moments the heater is generating what it needs. "Alright. Shouldn't be too long. You're more than welcomed to stay until the rain stops." Steeljaw stirs slightly....his optics blinking back online as his systems start back up with a soft hum...... Nicole Andrews os curled up on her small couch reading a novel of somesort. The heater itself which had been used on the robotic lion has since been turned off for awhile now to avoid any dangers of overheating. Outside, the rain seems to have stopped for now. Still dampm however. And cold. But otherwise... Steeljaw's rear limbs twitch a small amount......shifting now as he slowly lifts his head. Quietly.....he glances around for a moment......as he sorts his thoughts to remember why he is here. It comes back to him within a few seconds...and he takes a glance at his exposed systems. Well..........there dosen't appear to be any damage overly at the moment..... Nicole Andrews glances up from her book upon hearing the movement of metal brushing against her carpet. "Hi. How are you feeling?" Steeljaw tilts his head slightly......allowing the armored panelings to slip shut with an audible *CLACK*. "Better......" he says quietly. "I believe my internals have escaped any serious damage...." Nicole Andrews breaths a sigh of relief as she bookmarks her place and sets the book on a nearby coffee table. "That's good to know. I was a little concerned about that actually." She flickers a glance outdoors and states, "It stopped raining a few hours ago. But you looked as if you needed your sleep so..." She shrugs at that. Steeljaw moves carefully.....his front paws securing his body to stand up using his hind ones. As he steps up there's an audible creak of his joints grinding somewhere deeply....and he winces a bit....but seems to ignore it nonetheless. "T....thank you." he says quietly. "I....I've stayed here far too long as it is....." Nicole Andrews offers a light shrug, neither dismissing or agreeing with the lion's words. "You're welcomed anytime in case you ever want to visit." Steeljaw nods again slowly. "You're most kind....." he says, moving his limbs experimentally....one at a time. It's when he tries his hind ones that the grinding noise becomes evident....eliciting another brief wince from the lion. Finally.....he seems to accept that he's going to have to deal with the grinding until he can get it cleaned back in Metroplex. "If there is any way that I can repay the favor......" Nicole Andrews perks an eyebrow at the small grinding noise. But doesn't comment on it. She nods to the mechanoid slowly. "Finish the tour when your able and available?" she asks lightly. Of course...Steeljaw had already agreed to to do so at some time so it's not exactly anything worth thinking of. In truth, Nicole doesn't consider this something that demads payback. People should help one another because they simply want to...not because they have to or are rewarded. Not much in line with today's society perhaps. But it's Nicole. Steeljaw inclines his head. "I believe that could be aranged." he pauses for a moment. "Did you have anything specific in mind?" Nicole Andrews fingers the pattern within the sofa's surface absently. "Well...I don't really know much about the city save what you told me and...what I've learned from the media. So...I wouldn't know what kind of 'specific' to actually choose to be honest." Steeljaw smirks slightly..... "Then I am sure we could.....work something out. There are many areas that are open to the public for viewing actually." Nicole Andrews blinks and leans forward. "Which areas? What are they...like?" Steeljaw hmmms. "There is the repair bay....the lounges.....the barracks. The observation tower as well......I cannot see it being kept off limits...." Nicole Andrews ohs quietly. Still, her curiosity is aroused enough to display itself on her features. She's seen the city from afar and been within it once. She admits only to herself the thought makes her nevrous. But the longer she stays alongside Autobots such as Steeljaw...she feels a bit more clam. Might be his manner...could be he's more eye-to- optic level. She shakes her head. "Never knew it was a tourest attraction actually." Steeljaw chuckles. "Nor did many. But San Francisco's population grew a great deal with Autobot City's location. I have been told by some that it is simply for the novelty........." Nicole Andrews hmms. "Guess...I never paid too much attention. Moved here because...well...one of the more known cities for artists. Either here, Kansas City, or New York." She mulls over something silently and then shrugs. "Went to collage here so..." Steeljaw hmmmmmms. "You felt it best to remain somewhere that you had grown accustomed to?" The young woman replies, "Exactly. Don't get me wrong. I knew of the city nearby and all. Too me...it just didn't equate into the reasoning." Well, there were some factors involved. But not like she's going to go into them. Steeljaw should already know of one of these however. But seems that was already andered when he informed her of the scout car actually being the bondmate to Optimus Prime. And since Optimus was now gone... Steeljaw chuckles again. "Quite understandable." he tilts his head to one side.....optics shimmering lightly. "Where do you hope to go on....with your current paintings if I may ask?" The young woman has to consider that one still. "If you're referring to the one of Autobot City...I...don't really know. Sometimes I just paint for myself than for clients. I'm in somewhat of a brief lull right now between comissions. Would you be interested in seeing some of what I have?" Steeljaw turns around slightly....his hips moving a bit easier now. Maybe he just had to get some motion going. "I would be delighted." he answers. Nicole Andrews smiles lifts herself from her couch, promising to return within a few moments time. She directs herself towards the room used as her studio. She would have invited the lion inside but...is somewhat concerned about his large bulk moving inside the designated area. She returns moments later with something that looks like a scrap book as well as a sketch book. She places the sketch book below the other...thinking of showing Steeljaw her profolio first. Steeljaw approaches Nicole slowly.......sitting quietly off the side of her couch and watching patiently as she rearranges the sketchbooks. Nicole Andrews has both books on her lap...facing towards the lion. Her style is not exactly "photographic" in the sense that it's indistingishable from somehting taken with a camera. However, neiter is it "painterly"...although some liberties with showing the actual brushstrokes take place. Subjects of nature, animals, as well as childern are within her work. Sometimes in some sort of scene. Sometimes not. One painting even depicts a scene from the Chronicles of Narnia in which Lucy, Susan and Peter first meet the lion Aslan at the stone table. At this Niciole grins. "Always loved that series..." she explains. Steeljaw hmmmms....studying the pictures closely. He seems to linger on the picture from the novel, studying the image. A bit of thoughtfulness passes through his mind.....as he considers something..then finally speaks. "I do not understand......what is the reason that many people find a....facination with the Terran lion?" Nicole Andrews glances down at the print and holds her place there. "The lion is dubbed as the 'King of Beasts' within many stories and legends in human culture. As for the facination...not entirely certain. But there are alot of facinations that began centuries ago that still hold today...tho no one really knows why."" Steeljaw hmmmmms. "Curious....." he muses quietly....turning his gaze to the next pictures. "I must say.....you certainly have a talent." Nicole Andrews offers a modest nod as she turns the pages slowly so the mechanoid has a chance to see them. "Thanks. I always loved to draw...even when I was old enough to hold a paint brush. Although...I learned soon enough paper or canvas was preferred instead of the hallway wall." She comes to some older paintings. The same subjects are present...but lesser of them now. The overal colors seem a somewhat darker tone for some reason. One painting in particular is interesting. One one page the print depicts Optimus Prime standing within a battlefield after the battle had past. Prime's bondmate Roller, Prowl, and Ironhide also seem to be present while humans , or what look to be, stand in the background. Too the side are two yound girls. One with fiery red hair and the other with almond brown...the second being younger. Steeljaw blinks for a moment........staring at the picture of Optimus Prime and the others. He stares for a few seconds.....obviously suprised. "Er.....please.....one moment...." he says quietly....lowering his head for a closer look. "Such......an image...." he says quietly. One of his front paws comes up......as if to touch the painting gingerly.....but does not make contact. "This......" Nicole Andrews nods and rests back the page...allowing the lion to peer more fully. "I had that scene in my mind every since that battle happened. Just...thought it was time to try and get it it out on canvas..." Steeljaw sighs.....retrieving his paw. "Optimus........Prowl and Ironhide.....all lost to the war." he shakes his head slowly....then peers closer. "I assume that one of these two young girls is yourself?" Nicole Andrews gestures towards the red haired child holding to her sister. "Me and Melissa after the battle...before we found Mom and...learned what happened to Dad and Chris." Steeljaw blinks......but he has an idea what had happened to the two male names. He tilts his head slightly to one side.....unsure if he should speak of it or not....but he can't just let it go unnoticed. Finally...he concedes, "I'm sorry to hear about it....." Nicole Andrews nods slowly in response after a moment or two. "Sorry to hear of Optimus and the others." She does recall what the lion told her after they had left the muesoleum and all...so...she doesn't expand on this. Steeljaw nods slowly. "Thank you." he says quietly. He steps back again......curling his tail about himself as he eases his hindquarters to the floor. Nicole gently closes the book and lays it next to her novel...leaving some of her full color sketches of possible paintings in view. However, her mind isn't exactly on them at the moment. "That's some of the more current work I've done. Actually...did the last one about a month and a half ago." Around the time she first met Andi, and Sludge, and a fer other Autobots..." Steeljaw nods. "I see....." he says quietly. "As I said before......you have an obvious talent. I hope that you will find things to continually capture in your images. It's truly a gift that should be shared....." Nicole Andrews smiles modestly. "Thanks. I always saw it as some sort window...if that makes sense. Writers and poets use words. I use paints on a canvas. Everyone has some sort of outlet. Suppose this is mine." Steeljaw nods. "Very true." he pauses for a moment.....glancing towards the window nearby.....then sighs. "I believe it would be best if I thought about heading back soon. Much as I have enjoyed this....I believe Blaster will begin to wondor as to my whereabouts." Nicole Andrews notes that sunlight is peeking through some of the clouds as seen through the window. She's certain the lion is all but grateful for that. "You need...a ride?" Of course, she knows he somehow had gotten into Dan Fransisco some wahy and is more than likely planning on leaving in the same manner. But she offers just the same. She finds the lion likab;e...and his manner comforting. Steeljaw hmms. "Er......thank you but I believe I will manage. I freqently........catch a ride upon vehicles that are exiting the city." of course....that's in his tape mode.....and usually adhered to their bumper. Nicole Andrews tilts her head and blinks. Interesting method. But...it seems to work at any rate. "It was nice seeing you again," she offers. The circumstance could have been a tad differnt however. Nonetheless, if it had to happen he was caught within the deluge...she was glad she found him. "At the risk of embarassing myself, mind if I give you a hug?" Something she normally doesn't offer to new friends. But this one seems differnt. Steeljaw blinks....then tilts his head to one side. It's certainly not what he was expecting anyways. "Er......if you wish.......so...." Well...certaily doesn't sound as if he's offended. She takes it as a good sign stands up to ovver the goldon lion an embrace around his shoulders. "You take care, alright?" Steeljaw tilts his head slightly and nods slowly. "I will." he says quietly. "If you wish I will come back again when I do not have other duties sometime...." Steeljaw of course stands ramrod straight as before. Nicole Andrews pulls back and nods. "I'd like that." She flickers a glance outside once more and then turns to the lion. "Need me to take you outside now?" Steeljaw hmmmms.....glancing back at the doorway. "Er........yes please." he answers. "I believe it would be somewhat.....easier." he stands up fully then...... Steeljaw shifts.....then suddenly folds into the shape of a casette tape. Nicole Andrews kneels on the floor and gently picks up that cassette tape. She retrieves her coat and keys from the kitchen and exits out oher apartment...and then down the stairs. Nicole Andrews leaves to venture outdoors, the casette tape now in her coat pocket has he had been when she first brought him inside. She then ventures to the side of the building and then sets the tape on the cemet of the parking lot...away from the rain puddles. She then takes a step or two away to give him the space he needs. The tape shudders....then suddenly expands into the form of a golden colored lion. Nicole Andrews hmms. "Guess...I'll see you later then..." Steeljaw proceeds to transform back again.....standing up slowly at a loud grind from his rear legs. Nevertheless....he seems capable of moving. He nods in answer slowly.......glancing towards the direction of the traffic nearby. "I believe so yes. Thank you for your help Nicole. I do appreciate it..." Nicole Andrews hides her concern well...hoping the grinding isn't something that's serious. "No thanks necessary. Just...glad I was able to help." Steeljaw chuckles lightly......nodding. "It was appreciated nonetheless." his gaze switches to a large truck that is approaching the area of the street.....as if judging its speed......he begins to step towards the road.......preparing. With a last turn he glances back, "Until later....." Nicole Andrews nods with a smile and raises a hand with a small wave. "Til then..." Steeljaw proceeds to leap into the air as the truck passes by.........transforming and adhering easily to its side with a soft metallic *clink*........to be carried off.
