Born in Los Angeles, Kirkwood graduated from UCLA and earned his degree in Theater, with a minor in African American Studies.

Kirkwood's first exposure to "show business" was through his mother, Sandy Sobo, a former back-up singer for the popular vocalist Gino Vanelli (I Just Want To Stop). His first big acting break came, however, while he was still in high school.

Kirkwood had attended a television taping and volunteered to participate in an improv session on stage. An agent in the audience was so impressed with his comedic skills that he offered to represent him. One year later, Kirkwood was a series regular on the teen comedy, Running the Halls, on NBC.

Kirkwood went on to guest star on several series including The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, The Parent 'Hood, Family Matters, My So Called Life, Sister, Sister, Cosmic Slop: Space Traders and The Burning Zone.

On the latter series, Kirkwood expands, "My character was this 'troubled inner city kid' who was in danger of spontaneously combusting. I wore full arm prosthetics and four facial prosthetics. When we shot those scenes I pulled a 23-hour day, including four hours for makeup!"

Kirkwood's theatrical credits include performances in Othello, Big River, Grease, Brighton Beach Memoirs and Little Shop of Horrors.

A fan of science fiction, Kirkwood has read all of the works of Isaac Asimov among others, and was one of the throngs of people who crowded the theaters for the re-release of Star Wars. When not on the set, he indulges in another passion, video games. His current favorite is Star Wars Rebel Assault on Sony Playstation.
