Teal'c attempts to stop his son from being implanted with a Goa'uld.
That night, Teal'c confides in O'Neil that when he joined the humans, he left his wife, Drey-Auc, and son, Rya'c, on Chu'lak. Teal'c did not reveal this before as he did not trust the humans then, and did not want his family used as hostages. Rya'c will soon reach the age when the Printah, the implantation of a Goa'uld into a Jaffa, will be performed; something Teal'c will not allow to be performed on his son at any cost.
The remainder of SG-1, in light of the new information, decide to try and convince General Hammond to send them to Chu'lak; not only will they be able to recover a symbiot to study, but they may be able to find Jaffa who also are not loyal to the Goa'uld. Hammond will not send his troops behind enemy lines for any reason. Teal'c can wait no longer; donning his First Prime uniform he activates the Stargate to travel to Chu'lak. This finally convinces Hammond to allow SG-1 to travel to the Goa'uld stronghold and recover a symbiot, allowing Teal'c to save his son.
O'Neil, Carter and Jackson disguise themselves in Goa'uld robes; Teal'c is sufficiently disguised with his Serpent guard uniform. When the group arrive on Chu'lak, Teal'c tells the waiting priests SG-1 are scholars for Apophis. The priest asks Teal'c to remove his helmet, but Teal'c claims it was damaged in battle. Teal'c insists he will take the 'scholars' to Apophis's temple himself, telling the stubborn priest Apophis will reward the priest for his vigilance in interrogating the party.
Once out-of-sight the group remove their disguises and Teal'c guides them to his old home, only to find it burned to the ground and the totem for traitor painted on a charred wall. An aging Jaffa, Teal'c's mentor Bra'Tac, finds them at the house. Bra'Tac explains that Teal'c's family escaped the fire and are living in an outcast village on the outskirts of Chu'lak. When Bra'Tac sees the human members of SG-1 he is at first unimpressed, but after a short scuffle with O'Neil the Jaffa master decides they are fitting warriors. None have defied the Goa'uld and lived this long, Bra'Tac warns.
Carter and Jackson are sent to guard the Stargate while O'Neil, Teal'c and Bra'Tac go to the outcast village where Teal'c's family are. When the three arrive Teal'c finds a Goa'uld priest about to implant a symbiot into Rya'c. The priest reconises the traitorous Jaffa, and he and Teal'c fight briefly before the priest falls onto his own weapon.
Drey-Auc finds the implantation of the symbiot unsuccessful and strikes Teal'c; she has gone to much trouble to allow the Goa'uld to implant the symbiot. Even among the outcasts Drey-Auc and Rya'c are shunned, as Teal'c has abandoned them to fight alongside a race to which he does not belong. Drey-Auc has even told Rya'c his father is dead rather than let him know the truth. Teal'c accuses her of selfishness, saying Drey-Auc allowed Rya'c to become a host simply so she can rejoin the Chu'lak society.
Carter and Jackson see a group of Goa'uld priests carrying a tank, escorted by Jaffa. They follow the party to a temple which contains a tank full of Goa'uld symbiots; the priests are taking symbiots there in preparation for implantation. It is not guarded because the sanctity of the temple means none deface it anyway. The two steal a symbiot and place it within a storage cylinder. As they leave, Jackson fires at the tank; each of those Goa'uld larvae will take a human life one day, and so Jackson kills them first.
Rya'c is ill with scarlet fever, and so without the healing power of a Goa'uld the boy will die. O'Neil assures the Jaffa that Earth medicine can cure the boy without implantation. However, as the team run for the Stargate Rya'c becomes worse and it is obvious he will not live to reach Earth. Teal'c then gives his own Goa'uld to the boy so that he may be cured, even though Teal'c knows without his symbiot he will not survive. Just before Teal'c succumbs, Carter and Jackson arrive and are forced to implant the symbiot they stole from the temple into Teal'c.
When both Teal'c and Rya'c recover, Teal'c assures his son that the life of a Jaffa is long; one day Teal'c will return to Chu'lak and fight against the Goa'uld by his son's side. Teal'c farewells his family, and Bra'Tak leads SG-1 to the Stargate. Bra'Tak tells the priests at the Stargate he is escorting SG-1 to Apophis himself, single-handedly overpowering the priests when they refuse to open the Stargate. Teal'c thanks his former mentor for his help, and Bra'Tak promises to teach the young Rya'c as a warrior.
In this episode, Teal'c returns to his home town of Chu'lak (which was last seen in Children of the Gods) to prevent his son from being implanted with a Goa'uld symbiot. This shows that Teal'c's name is now synonomous with 'traitor', and that his decision to help the humans has cost his family their livelihood.
It also develops Teal'c as a person, rather than just a defective Jaffa. Teal'c will do anything to protect his family, and go to the same lengths to stop the Goa'uld from gaining any more power.
Just one problem: the cure for scarlet fever in penicillin, such a commonly-used drug that one would expect it in SG-1's first-aid kit. So why didn't they just give Rya'c a shot and be done with it?
