Some of the many details that still have to be dealt with when creating a space colony are how its immigrants would be selected, the psychological impact on these people living in space, and that same impact on the first generation of space children. Some of the physiological areas to be looked at are the specific intake and outtake amounts of plants and animals living in space, atmospheric variations, disposal of wastes, and health problems relating to humans not living on Earth. Social issues like the cost of making and maintaining a colony, how the colony would be constructed, and maintaining law and order in the colony are also aspects which must be considered.
Space colonies would fulfill both human wants and needs. Our world is in great need of a new industry to provide it with resources. Space industries, SPSs, and the new knowledge we would obtain in space would give the Earth a wealth of new resources. Earth is overpopulated, crowded, and filthy. Space colonies would give people an alternative to living on Earth, while still allowing them to go home again if they wanted to. These settlements would give humans the joy of living in space while possessing all the comforts of home.
Living in space is not an unreasonable idea. More and more space is seeming less like an alien land, and more like a new frontier just waiting to be explored and settled. The resources and knowledge we gain from living in space will benefit our species immensely. It may even save us from extinction.
The goal of creating a space colony is attainable. It is a realistic endeavour because the required technology for building one is here now, as is the human need for one. Space is our future. It is an unmarked and unexplored territory that will provide resources, knowledge, and settlements for mankind.
You enter your house by uttering the simple command "Open Door." After a long day of work, all you can think about is lying down on your big, comfortable bed and going to sleep. You switch off your lamp and drift away, your home illuminated only by the light of a crescent Earth as it slowly floats by your window. Such is our future in the new land of space.
