The 'Packmule' class jump carrier was commissioned in 1117, shortly after the Union was informed of the outbreak of the Rebellion. The Gralyn Union Steering Committee felt that a method of moving up to 5 Valiant-class SDBs to neighboring star systems for use as battle riders was a Real Good Idea.

Designed at TL10, the Packmules were originally constructed at Lanixohn. Their lower tech level allows them to be maintained locally at Gralyn at a reasonable cost, and its onboard tankage for two Jump-1s was ordained for future upgrades to a full working Jump-2. Nine ships were delivered before Stationfall destroyed all orbital shipyards at Lanixohn. The original designs were duplicated at Gralyn, as well as some duplicate tool templates for manufacture of spares. An additional three ships have been ordered from the Carter Technum's shipyards.

Although Imperial doctrine for ships of this type discourage their use in combat, it was felt that the investment required to make these ships demanded some defensive and offensive capabilities. Thus, they were designed for 50 hardpoints, filled with sandcasters and missile racks to allow it a measure of survivability in hostile conditions. Its dispersed structure was dictated by the need to launch all its riders at once. Its additional 1100 ton cargo capability allows it to be used as a missile collier for reloading the Valiants, as well as packing life support spares to extend their ranges. When not needed for SDB depolyment, the Packmule doubles as a 'can runner', carrying up to 4000 additional tons of cargo in specially designed hulls, or other nonstarships such as Slow Traders. Although its unstreamlined nature prohibits landing in atmospheres and gas giant refueling, it carries two 95 ton fuel shuttles and a 40 ton personnel pinnace. These were locally produced to save money.

As is customary with Gralyn-made or ordered ships, the ship's name is chosen by the 'keel owner', or first, crew taking possession from the yards. The crews are under no obligation to name the ship according to class name.

A TL11 variant, designated the 'Pachyderm' Class, is in development, using some of the Carrillian technology transfered with the influx of the refugees. The improved Jump Drives needed by the Pachyderms to allow a Jump 2 are expected to be produced locally, using adapted Carrillian technology. The prototype and three units are scheduled to be built at Carter while Gralyn retools for its Class A starport and climb to TL11. A design and fabrication team comprised of Gralyn nationals and Carrillian advisors is working on the project at Carter. The prototype is scheduled for delivery during the 2nd quarter of 1127.
