Posting: Ask me. I'll say yes. Summery: Luke turns to the dark side. Luke stared at the dark figure before him. No. It wasn't possible. This monster couldn't be his, well, he didn't even want to think about it. It had to be a lie, but of course, it was true. Luke felt instinctively that is was the truth as much as he wished it were false. Luke stared at the stump where his hand should be and then at the menacing figure standing before him. The figure spoke but Luke was too overcome with shock and unwanted knowledge that he didn't hear him. Every part of Luke screamed out against this. His father wouldn't maim him! Fathers don't do that, did they? Well, the dark lord wouldn't turn him! Luke took a deep breath and jumped down, down, forever down. Maybe that could get rid of the knowledge that his father, his father was alive and... well, he didn't want to know the rest of it. A part of him hoped that he wouldn't survive, that he would fall into the gas giant and that part grew more and more every minute. Leia, he called. Help me. Vader stared down at the hole that his son, yes it was his son, had just jumped into. The Anakin that still lived in him was pained by the fact that his son would rather die than acknowledge what his father had become, but Vader quickly crushed that. The only reason his son had jumped was because he didn't know the power of the dark side, Vader reasoned. He took one more look down the chute where his son had fallen and left. His comlink squawked, disturbing the silence. "Uh, Lord Vader, we have located a small freighter matching the description of the one that escaped from Hoth..." The lieutenant stammered. Lord Vader sighed, fear was good but not at times like these. "Very well Lieutenant. Ready my shuttle." "Yes, Lord Vader." The comlink beeped and was off. Vader sighed again and made his way back to his shuttle. There still was a chance that he would get what he came for. This was not a time that he could risk the Emperor's displeasure. Luke hung by one hand above the Millennium Falcon and then dropped into a dark man he had never seen before in his life. Oh well, this time was as good as any for introductions. "I'm... Luke...Luke Sky... Skywalker." The dark man looked chagrined and winced at a painful memory. How could he have even thought of betraying this man? "Stop talking. You'll only hurt yourself. I'm Lando, Lando Calrissian. I'm, uh I was the Baron-administrator of Cloud City. I'm here with Leia. We've got to get you strapped in, it's not everyday that you get chased by a Super Star Destroyer." Well, Lando thought, maybe not for me, but this is a Rebel. Maybe they do get chased by a Super Star Destroyer everyday. Lando put Luke in a bunk in the back, strapping him in and then went to the cockpit. "Is Luke okay?" the princess asked. Lando cringed. No one had ever been concerned like that over him. "He's fine. I left him lying down. He'll be okay. We just have to get out of here." Lando said. Like that would be the easy part. Luke wanted to hide inside himself. How could he ever tell Leia that he was related to the man who had killed her parents? He didn't know. Suddenly he heard a voice in his head. Luke, it said. Vader wanted him to come to him willingly. Luke knew there and then that Vader was his father and there was nothing he could do about it. Father, he answered silently, not knowing if Vader heard him. Suddenly the Falcon rocked, hit by turbolaser fire from the Executor. Vader was coming closer and closer, Luke knew that if he were captured, he would turn. He knew that with a certainty that would have bewildered anyone who didn't know his history. Obi-Wan had lied to him. Vader had told him the truth. That went against all his morals. He had nothing left to fight for, he would succumb to the call of the dark side. He pitied the galaxy that would be there when that happened. Luke set his jaw. He had to make sure that this would never happen. They had to get away. Leia could do it. Then the tractor beam locked on to the freighter and Luke knew it was hopeless. A stun beam hit the freighter making sure that the occupants wouldn't fight back and Luke's consciousness faded. Vader looked up as the lieutenant walked in; his fear of the Dark Lord was apparent in his very steps. "Are the Rebels secure?" Vader asked bluntly. "Yes, Lord Vader. There are 2 men, one girl, two droids, and a Wookie on board, all immobile. We are awaiting your commands." "Put them all in different cells and keep them as far away from each other as possible. Wipe the droids memories and put them into Imperial service. One of the Rebels is missing his right hand. Fit him for the best new one you can find and put on him. This must be done while he is unconscious. Do you understand, Lieutenant?" The lieutenant nodded once and left. Soon. It would be soon. Soon his son would see the potency of the dark side and join him. They would rule the Empire, rule as father and son as it was always meant to be. He could taste his victory over the wounded Jedi. The Emperor would be very pleased indeed. Luke awoke in a prison cell in his father's Super Star Destroyer Executor. He flexed his fingers tightly and then recoiled in surprise. He stared at his hands. Both of them. This couldn't be right. Vader had cut off his right hand not more than a day ago. What kind of deception was this, what kind of hypocrisy? As far as he knew the Imps never cared to heal the people they hurt and he was an Imp prisoner. This didn't compute at all, as Threepio would say. Then memory hit him. The pain of a lightsaber cutting through his arm, the dismay when he heard that Obi-Wan had lied to him. Was this the reason that Obi- Wan and Master Yoda hadn't wanted him to go? "Ben," he groaned, "why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you tell me?" "I would have told you, but Yoda forbade me. He was afraid something like this would happen." Obi-Wan materialized as if out of nowhere. "Huh? What happen?" Luke asked, not sure what Obi-Wan was referring to. "You've given up hope. You've resigned to the fact that you'll give in to Vader." "I don't see how I can avoid that, Ben. I'm on his ship; I'm in no condition to fight, and nothing else to believe in. You lied to me once, what's stopping you from doing it again?" Luke asked, hoping that Ben wouldn't answer. "That's not you talking, Luke. That's your father talking." Ben admonished him. "Your father gave into his temptations and became Darth Vader. I knew your father as a good man. When your father became Darth Vader, the good man I knew as your father died. I told you the truth as I believed it. I never lied to you. Vader lied to you. Not about being your father. In one existence he was your father. No, I mean about the dark side. It is not more potent." Ben sighed. This was harder than training young Anakin Skywalker and the Force knew how that had turned out. "And how would you know?" Luke asked bitterly. "At one point in their life, a Jedi must face the darkness inside of them. The darkness might whisper to you, saying that it can give you fast power and it can, but the dark side takes more than it gives. Now go to sleep Luke. I seem to recall an old Rebel saying. 'Sleep now..." Ben drew out. "'for you never know when you might have another chance to do so.' Yeah, I know, I know. I'll try." "No Luke. Do or do not. There is no try." Luke fell exasperated onto the bed and promptly fell asleep, still knowing that Obi-Wan had lied. That was a truth that not even Ben could deny. And Vader had told him the truth. And that was that. Vader felt a familiar kind of dread sink into him. This time, he knew, he had nothing to fear. He had captured Skywalker and it would only be a matter of time until he turned the boy. Vader knelt as the Emperor's image winked into view. "Rise and report Lord Vader." The Emperor said. "My Master, I have succeeded in capturing young Skywalker." Vader said, short and simple. "Very quick this was. Have you succeeded in turning him?" "No my Master." "You must proceed with caution. Remember, if he does not turn, you are obligated to destroy him." "Yes my Master." "Good Lord Vader. Train him in the ways of the dark side and turn him. Corrupt the boy. Use sorcery as you wish but use it sparingly. Tell him the truth until you nearly break. He must be compelled to believe you all the time. Once he believes that you would never lie to him, lie to him as you wish. Remember Lord Vader that he is not necessary to have as an asset." "Yes my Master." With that, the Emperor disappeared into the darkness leaving Vader with his own dark thoughts of how to turn his son. Leia felt like screaming. Actually, she had already tried that and it didn't seem to do anything. She had been in this cell for over three months as far she could tell. Food came in every night by means of a stormtrooper. She didn't know where Luke or Lando or even Chewbacca was! She caught hold of the stormtrooper as he was leaving. "Can you at least tell me where my friends are?" She asked him, expecting him to just brush her off. Instead she was surprised to hear him answer her. "Rebel scum, I don't know where your cohorts are and you would do well to remember your place. Rebels!" He threw up his hands in disgust. Well, at least she got him to answer her. "All right! I know when a fight is lost. I never will see my love again. Or Luke. Or Lando." Leia was surprised to see him jerk at the mention of Luke's name. She tried a different approach. "I still remember when I met Luke," Again she noticed the undeniable jerk, "he barged in and told be that he was here to rescue me. Him and a Jedi Master." Leia was surprised to see the stormtrooper falter when he heard Jedi. It was almost too much for Leia to bear but she knew that she had to play it slow. "I just wish I knew where Luke was. You probably know, but you would never tell me. I guess I knew that the second my homeworld was blown up while I was watching." The stormtrooper visibly twitched at the mention of Alderaan. So she was right. His accent was from Alderaan. That he was still in Imperial service surprised her. Many had defected after the destruction of Alderaan. She would have, if she hadn't already been in the Rebellion. "Please Princess. Stop torturing me with memories of my homeworld! Just the Alderaanian look at you has me remembering! And you speak of Lord Vader's apprentice as if he would be friends with almost anyone!" With that, the stormtrooper left the room giving Leia time to think about what she had just heard. Luke-Vader's apprentice? It didn't seem possible, but the trooper didn't seem to be lying. How could Luke be a student of Vader? That just didn't seem possible. Leia settled back. She had to get out of here, she just wished she knew how. Luke walked behind his new master, Lord Vader, honored to have the privilege of walking behind his master. Everyone cleared way for them as they passed. Suddenly Vader spoke. "Think for a moment Luke. You are my son. Tell me what that means." Vader said. Luke thought and replied. "It means that I must work hard to make myself worthy of such an honor, my master." Luke said, feeling confident that his answer had been the correct one. Oops. Luke immediately reddened and looked down at the ground. It was not his place to assume anything. It wasn't right unless his lord told him it was right and that was that. "Good, Luke. Soon you will be subservient enough that you will have no need for chastisement." Vader said, giving Luke the answer that he hoped he would get. For that was the entire purpose that he was here, to serve his father and the Emperor. He could not achieve such a lofty goal as that with a will of his own. He must do whatever his master wished of him. That was his purpose in life. Leia, Han, Lando, and Chewbacca meant nothing to him now. They were just people who were stopping him from achieving his full potential. Obi-Wan never wanted him to. Luke's eyes hardened. Obi-Wan didn't want Luke to be stronger than him so he never told Luke about the dark side. Luke hated Obi-Wan for this and wanted him to pay. Sadly, his good father had already disposed of this nuisance. Luke and Vader turned around the corner into a torture chamber. "Get on the chair." Vader told Luke. "Yes, my master." Luke got on the chair. He knew this was necessary. His bout with the dirty Rebels might have left him stained in some way, unfit for Imperial service. Luke felt a debt of gratitude that Lord Vader would personally see that there were no marks on him. The torture module closed and Luke's mind went blank, ready for plying by Darth Vader. A couple of hours later, Luke got up feeling purified. He could remember pain and attributed it to stains being removed. Darth Vader towered over him and Luke winced, ready for a punishment for his crimes in Rebel service. "Luke." "Yes, Lord Vader?" "You have been cleansed. All but for one thing." A blast door slid open in front of them. Behind glass were 2 humans and one Wookie all tied up. Luke gasped. The 2 humans were Leia and Lando and the Wookie was Chewiee. They all had meaning in his former life, very important roles too. "Yes, my son. To fully cleanse yourself you must kill them for they are the only left between your old life and your new one." "Yes, my master. How do you wish for me to kill them?" Luke asked, his former confidence shattering in a second. He wasn't sure if he could. Enough of weaknesses! He was a dark apprentice and could do it. It wasn't so hard to kill them. Yet he felt somehow that he couldn't. "Anyway you want to, my young apprentice." Vader looked at Luke. The Emperor had said that this was to be one of his final tests. The boy had to pass it. If he failed, all could be lost. The boy was deep in the dark side, Vader knew, but there could be still a spark of good, a spark of light, left in him. He watched the boy take a cleansing breath and suddenly clench his teeth. The human man cried out in pain and was soon squirming on the deck, in death throws. The human girl soon joined him in convulsions. The Wookie looked dead on the floor. Suddenly, Luke fainted and the prisoners lay still. Vader did a quick Force scan and saw that they were barely alive, but they were alive. Disgusted, Vader ordered that they be brought back to their cells and were given no medical treatments. Vader knew that he would have to report this failure to the Emperor. Vader's master would not be pleased by these turns of events. Luke came to lying on a bed in the medical wing. He knew he had failed, failed terribly. Luke dreaded his punishment. He knew that punishments were vital to learning but his punishment for this failure could only be one thing: death. Yet, he could avoid death by one thing. Atonement. He must atone for his failure. Luke could only think of one way to atone for disobeying a direct order and that was to kill them now, here, before anyone came to check on him. Luke stretched out with the Force and touched Lando's mind. He felt for Lando's windpipe and tried to crush it. Luke started to black out. It was almost like the Force didn't want Lando to die. Luke felt around Lando's cell for the lock. Once he found it, he broke it in such a way that no one but a Force-user could get in or out. He did this for Leia's and Chewbacca's cells. Good, now they would die of starvation. Luke knew this would not take away his entire failure, but it might let him appease his master, and in that live longer. And in living longer, serving longer. I live to serve, Luke told himself. There is no life with out service. Vader felt dread wash over him once again. This time he knew that he had something to fear. He dreaded the order to kill the boy. Luke had come so far; he could not be made to stop now. He was an asset to the Empire, Vader knew, so his life was worth something. The boy followed orders better than a stormtrooper and hated the Rebels now more than Vader and the Emperor combined did. Vader knelt as his master came into view. "What is thy bidding, my master?" Vader said. "How did young Skywalker do on his test to kill his former friends, Lord Vader?" The Emperor asked Vader in return. Vader had known this question was coming. "He failed to kill his friends then, blacking out as they were about to die. I have learned that the Rebels' cell locks have been broken in such a way that no food can be gotten in to keep them alive, though. This occurred right after the boy woke up, my master." Vader answered, hoping this would be enough for the Emperor to keep Luke alive longer. "Fascinating this is. An interesting development. Give young Skywalker one more chance to kill his friends. If he fails this time though, Lord Vader, you are to kill him immediately. Do you understand me, my servant?" The Emperor asked. Vader hid his sigh of relief. This is what he had hoped for. "Yes, my master." Vader answered as the Emperor disappeared. He would set to work at once. Luke must not fail this time. Leia didn't know what to think. She hadn't wanted to believe the stormtrooper when he told her about Luke but she couldn't help it now. She felt weak and tired. Just a few days ago she had been dragged into a room and tied up next the Lando and Chewiee. She saw two dark figures standing a few yards in front of her in front of the glass. Then she felt as if her heart had been ripped from her body. The younger man looked like Luke. He made some sort of gesture and then her heart really was being ripped out of its place. She fell on the floor, gasping, knowing she would die, wanting to die so the pain would stop. Then she lay still, the pain stopped. She was weak and tired. Leia had been taken back to her cell with out medical help and she soon fell asleep. She went days without food, not knowing the passage of time without it. She felt for her lock and it felt normal but something felt wrong about it. She couldn't open the door and neither could anyone on the outside. She knew she would die of starvation. Leia knew that she needed to conserve her energy so she picked herself up and lay on the bed. Suddenly, light blared into her cell. In the doorway stood a dark figure that looked very familiar. Luke. She tried to smile but she wasn't sure if he was there to get her out or to hurt her. It pained her that she didn't know what side Luke was on anymore. "Get up, princess." Luke said. Then it clinched for her. Luke had to be on the other side now. It was now up to her to get herself out of there. She decided to do what he said. "What's wrong with you Luke? What's happened to you? Don't you remember the times we had, Luke? All the great times. Like the party we had when you came back alive from a dangerous flight into Imperial space? When Rogue Squadron's roster was complete? Why don't you remember Luke?" Leia knew that she was grasping for ends of a fast-moving string, there was not much of a chance that she could get Luke to see her side now. "You don't understand, Leia, you never did. The Empire has done nothing wrong. It is you Rebels who are doing an injustice, causing us to retaliate anyway we need to so we can keep peace and order in the galaxy. And you will never have a chance to understand." Luke brandished his blaster. Leia was stung by his use of 'we'. She knew that he was an Imp but the implications had just sunk in. "You're going to use a blaster on me? I would have thought you would be more graceful in murdering me. Since you are a Jedi, I would have thought that you would be less cowardly. Oh well. I did love you. I just want you to know that." Leia hoped that that would stop Luke but she couldn't really dare to hope. Luke felt stung by her words. He wasn't a coward. He wasn't murdering anyone, he was doing justice. He wasn't a Jedi; he was part of the dark side. Her words must be being used to sting him and to give her a chance to get away. He couldn't allow that. Yet, her declaration of love hurt him. How could he kill her? Still, it was kill her or be killed and he didn't want to die. Appealing to his past would be the last mistake she would ever make. Luke aimed his blaster and felt an odd sense of grief as the kill blast caught her right in the heart. Unknowing brother just killed unknowing sister. Luke tried to calm down. Shooting Lando and Chewbacca hadn't been this hard. Luke took some cleansing breathes and let his anger at having been ordered to kill his friends sweep over him and make him more in tune with the dark side. He took one last look at Leia and turned and left the cell. He had had to do it with a blaster because the traitorous Obi-Wan Kenobi was blocking him if he tried to use the Force. Luke walked down the hallways of the detention chamber, half-expecting for a stormtrooper to come out from behind and shoot him. Relax. You did it. Those dirty Rebels will no longer be able to hurt you, Luke told himself, not quite believing it. To his surprise, he found that he could only truly feel complete and think clearly at his master's side. He knew that this was because Lord Vader was deeper in the dark side than he was. Luke wondered if being the Emperor's apprentice would feel like this. In fact, Luke was angry with himself for not feeling this earlier, like he wasn't worthy enough to have felt it before. A figure came out of the shadows when Luke had reached near the reactor core. Luke squinted. Who was this? It wasn't a storm trooper or anyone in Imperial service, that much he knew. So what was this apparition? The figure advanced and Luke backed away, gasping. "What's gotten in to you, Luke? What's wrong? You're brainwashed more than a TIE pilot or a stormtrooper recruit! Where's the Luke I used to know?" Luke finally saw who it was and gasped. Obi-Wan Kenobi stood in between Luke and the door, blocking it. "Get out of my way, old man." Luke said to him and tried to walk through Obi-Wan but somehow he wasn't able to. "You see Luke, for short times I can become corporeal. Answer my questions. I saved you from death many times Luke. Where is the Luke I saved?" "You speak riddles, old man. I am Luke Skywalker, here, now and forever." Luke stated, hoping the old man understood what he meant. "Oh, I understand you Luke. I also wonder why you are fingering the red lightsaber you so meticulously built in a day?" Obi-Wan said sarcastically. He knew why. The sins of the father... and all that. Luke didn't give Obi-Wan an answer. Instead he swept up his lightsaber and ignited it. A bright red beam pulsed from the hilt and slashed up to slice Obi- Wan in half. At the last second, Obi-Wan brought out Anakin's and Luke's old lightsaber and blocked the slash. "Í don't want to have to fight you Luke," Obi-Wan said unconcerned by the way Luke's thrusts came at him. "Then don't, old man," Luke retorted. But he was soon surprised. Obi-Wan stepped forward and with 2 strokes cut Luke's lightsaber along the side. The wires popped free but the blade still worked. Angry, Luke spun and made a vicious stroke at Obi-Wan who calmly deflected it. Luke stepped back and tried a different approach. He took out his blaster and started shooting wildly at Obi- Wan. Ben calmly deflected them. One deflected blast hit Luke in the leg, sending him reeling backwards down the chasm which was the reactor core. Obi-Wan watched Luke fall in silence and then turned off his lightsaber. Not looking back, he disappeared into the Force. Vader looked down at the form of his son in concern. It wasn't supposed to happen this way. His son was so strong, he couldn't end up like Vader, hidden in a breathing suit for his entire life. The medics assured Lord Vader that Luke's heart and lungs were fine so he wouldn't need a breathing suit. Only his face and arms seemed hurt but Vader knew that Luke's soul had been shattered, pieces going everywhere trying to make sense of his situation. The Emperor had told Vader that being that Luke had passed the test that Vader should do everything he could to let his son live. Bacta tanks could do wonders Vader knew, but it didn't seem to be helping his son. Luke had been taken out of the best bacta tank the Empire had that morning and was sleeping on a repulsor bed in the medical wing. The only thing visibly wrong with his son was the scar on his face, running vertically between his right eye and his chin, and the scar on his upper arm and shoulder. But Vader knew that if the boy didn't get a 'dose' of the dark side soon he most likely would die. Luke stirred and woke. "I have failed you, my master." Luke wheezed carefully. "How have you failed me, my son?" Vader asked. "I was beaten by a ghost. The ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi, my master. We had a lightsaber duel and he beat me. I then took out my blaster and shot in anger at him. He deflected all the bolts with my first lightsaber. One bolt was deflected at my leg, throwing me backwards. I was beaten by an apparition, my master. How could I still be worthy enough to live in Imperial service after being beaten by something that's not really there at all? I deserve death, that I know. And I welcome death, because death brings the ultimate redemption." Luke said weakly. Vader stared down at him. His son was so brainwashed that he was begging to be killed! This brain washing has to go, Vader decided, if the boy is to stay in Imperial service. Brainwashing was good for a mindless stormtrooper, not for the son of Vader. It had to be of his own free will. Luke had to want to serve, not be compelled to serve. Vader closed his eyes behind his mask and dove into his son's being. He found the source of the brainwashing and gently broke it. He passed by devotion and loyalty and went to the source of his son's pain. It was, unsurprisingly, the part of the brain that friendship fueled. Killing his friends must have caused this, Vader knew. But how to fix this? He went to the love part of the brain and also saw it deteriorating, but it was somehow fixing itself. Vader plunged deeper. What was this love? The love of a son for a father. Vader was touched. Once the brainwashing had left, Luke's love for Vader, his father, had finally had leave to surface. And love fueled friendship and loyalty. Vader took some of this endless love and devotion and put it in instead of friendship. Luke's soul was complete again. Luke's eyes fluttered open for the first time in a long while and Vader could see the tenderness in them. "What happened?" Luke asked his father, not confined now to just addressing him as his teacher. "Deist Retry Snit La Gads." Vader said, invoking the old Sithian proverb about how the deeds of the father's are signs for the children. "Do you mean that? You mean that I can serve under you, Father?" Luke asked, for the first time invoking the title Father on his father. "If you so wish and the Emperor agrees." Vader could see that Luke had the same read on the Emperor as Vader did. Good to serve under for now, but to be disposed of later. Now that his son was like him, the dream was a possibility once more. Vader could see that his son didn't have a lot of loyalty to Palpatine, all his loyalty was to his father. "Will I be alright?" Luke asked. "The medics say that you'll be fine, Luke." Vader replied and saw his son visibly relax. Luke soon fell asleep and Vader left the room, filled with plans of taking over the Empire. It happened sooner than even Vader's quickest plans had allowed for. It seemed that a desperate Rebel had entered Imperial Palace undetected and managed to kill the Emperor and his guards. Being that Vader was Palpatine's second in command, he was naturally moved up to be Emperor. As his first official act, Emperor Vader made Luke Skywalker his second in command and gave him the title Lord. They ruled together as was always meant to be. They established order to the galaxy and wiped out the rebels at a far away moon with the unlikely name of Endor. Worlds bowed before them, no one dared oppose them, crime was down, and the dark prince named Xizor never had a chance to plot the death of Skywalker after he died in an unfortunate accident when his castle fell down. No explosives were found and it remains a freak accident in the official records. Emperor Vader ruled the galaxy justly, as did Lord Skywalker after him. The galaxy became a good place again and the Force prevailed. THE END
