DRACULA (1979)

This movie, staring Frank Lagella was one of those "good ideas gone bad" movies. Frank, at the time prior to the filming was extremely successful as Dracula in the stage play. This movie is supposedly the translation from the stageplay. And my, it suffers in the translation. Frank is rivetting himself, but the plot is barely there. Also, one of my bigest gripes is when horror movies rely on special effects to move the plot along. That is excactly what this does. It relys so heavily on the "shock factor" of the special effects as a substitution for a storyline. Laurence Olivier plays the Van Hesling, and plays it well. This movie is indeed quite a shame because of the talentted actors that were in it. It could have been so much better....perhaps even rivelled Bela Lugosi's original. 1
