Gateway has been a very busy place since we moved to West 38th street. We hope you have been involved in the many activities, sales and events we have had. If not, we have lots of things planned this spring and summer that will make Gateway a fun and exciting place to spend some of your time.
1999 is going to be an incredible year for football rookie cards. It may be the best crop of rookies ever, with Couch, Williams, Akili Smith and lots more! Basketball cards have come on strong after the strike, also with a strong rookie crop. The companies are including lots of autograph cards for added value! Baseball is coming off one of its all time great seasons. Cards of Mark McGwire are in demand, and so are Topps Nolan Ryan reprints. There are many ways to collect cards, like your favorite player or team, complete sets or rookie cards! Maybe you can even get some of your cards autographed!
This area of Gateways buisness continues to grow rapidly. Magic the Gathering remains the leading CCG, helped along by Gateways participation in the Wizards of the Coasts ARENA LEAGUE. We play Arena every thursday. This league gives you the chance to play Magic the Gathering in an organized setting, where you can win valuable prizes available only through league play! The Pokemon CCG has been a huge phenomenon nationally and at Gateway. Its been hard getting the cards in due to the huge demand, but hopefully by the release of the new JUNGLE expansion, supply will catch up with demand. Remember you "Gotta catch em all!" Other popular CCG's include Ani-Mayhem (Dragonball z), Star Trek, Star Wars, Overpower (features comic characters), Babylon 5, and lots more. We have tournaments for these games in the store all the time, so stop by, choose a game you like, learn how to play (theres usually someone at Gateway who can teach you), and join in the fun!
Gateway carries several role-playing games, but we focus on Dungeons and Dragons primarily at Gateway. TSR, the D&D's manufacturer, sponsors a league much like the Magic Arena league. We play every Wednesday night around 5:30. Beginners are encouraged to attend. Most of our player Wednesdays are new to the game and you don't need to bring anything with them to begin with, so don't be shy! We can help you create a character and have you slaying monsters in no time. We usually chip in on pizza during the evening if you are interested. Some parents may have questions about whats involved in roleplaying. we would be happy to talk with them, or to provide a very informative pamphlet published by the Game Manufacturers association. For older, more advanced players, we are forming a group now. Stop or call if you fit this category.
This company issues the best in miniature tabletop battle games. The new release of their popular Warhammer 40,000 game was a huge success, while the fantasy game Warhammer is becoming a weekly gaming event every Saturday afternoon at Gateway. We have two 8x4 tables to play on in our game room. Warhammer is played with characters and creatures from a magical time, before technology. Warhammer 40,000 takes place far in the future in a place where war is all there is, sort of like the future world from the movie "Terminator". Battlefleet Gothic is a new game from Games Workshop. You Star Wars fans will like this game. Its based on battles of spaceships and stations in outerspace! These games are complete hobbies. You have to put together and paint your army and then you can play the game. This consists of moving the figures on the table through trees and buildings (which you can build yourself as part of the hobby), and fighting a battle against an opposing army. Gateway now orders every other week with Games Workshop, so we always have the latest releases.
Gateway has changed the way we do comic files a little bit since the last newsletter. Customers now turn in monthly order forms for the titles they want to get, or we fill it out for them based on a standing order list. Lots of customers have used the order forms to order items they want but would not otherwise have known about! Customers now must leave a credit card number on file, or else pay for the comics they order in advance. This has not really been a problem for most people, and it is enabling us to stock the new comic rack better because of our inproved cash flow. We know that many of our customers want to know when our famous and ever popular "comics by the pound sale" will be held. Well, the date is going to be June 8th thru the 11th. We have thousands of new comics since the last sale in September. For those of you that havn't been to one of these sales before, make sure you attend, its lots of fun! Comics in the sale are only an unbelieveable $1.00 a pound!!! Check with us this summer for back issue sales too!
Gateway has gotten big into bears. PLUSH, collectable sports figure bears that is. Companies like Limited Treasures and Salvino are leading the way. Players available include Flutie, Marino, Moss, Manning, and many others in football. Baseball bears include McGwire, Sosa and Justice to name a few, and there are hockey bears too. There will be a bear set for basketball finally released by Salvino. It has five bears, four legends and Kobe Bryant. These are due out in May.
ANIME is what Japanese animation is called. We carry videos for sale now, new and used. Some popular titles include Sailor Moon, Dragonball z, and Street Fighter. Some anime we carry contains adult content and violence, and would be considered R rated, we label these videos "adult" or mature" for your convenience.
