Gateway is extremely happy to announce that as of September 1st we have moved to 833 West 38th Street. Our new phone number is (814) 864-3772.
We are now in the Cohen's Carpet Plaza. We are in the center of the plaza in the former Cake Box store. Some of you old-timers may remember this plaza as the old Toy World plaza. This move is long overdue for us. Our store is more than twice as large as the old Gateway on Ash street. We think you'll agree that we are very well set up now to take care of our customer's needs. As always service comes first, and we are continuing the punchcard program, so you can still earn free merchandise with your purchases. Every area of the store is wheelchair accessible and we now sell cold soft drinks and snacks. Our gaming customers should appreciate this, especially during our tournaments and game demos in our new 400 square foot gaming area. Of course we can also use this area for comic book signings (see "comics"), and other purposes which require space. We can even help you plan a birthday party here with a magic the gathering, comic book, or sportscard theme if you want. There is lots of free parking, so please stop by and see our new store!
We have restocked all of our back issue boxes, so you may want to take a look if there is a particular issue you want to find. As always we here at Gateway expect to maintain a great back issue section in the new store.
As far as our new comic pull and hold subscription service, we are implementing a new policy. We are forced to do this for several reasons, including shrinking discounts from the publishers for retail stores like ours. We can't afford to keep holding over files for several months at a time. This ties up our cash flow too much, and the truth is that a few customers will let their file grow indefinitely, with no intention of ever buying any of it. So all new comics in files will now be treated as 30 day layaways. If a comic stays in a file over 30 days we reserve the right to put it back on the shelf and/or place the customers file on hold. So please don't order comics you can't afford to pay for within 30 days of its arrival. We'll try to carry a better selection on the shelf for people to choose from also. Of course, we will work with anyone who has a good reason why they can't come in every month. Comics can be prepaid, a deposit can be left, or you can leave a credit card number for us to charge your comic to every month. Back issue comics put on hold will be treated as 7-day layaways. Here again, if you don't have the money for it, leave it in the box until you can afford it. Of course, high priced back issues can be laid away for up to 30 days, or longer in special cases.
With the added space we now have, one of our goals is to carry a larger line of Graphic novels, Manga, and more. Talk to us about what you would like to see more of offered on our shelves.
Finally, we are happy to announce a comic book signing at Gateway on Saturday Sept. 26th. Local artist and writer Shawntae Howard will be autographing copies of his recently published comic "EXTINCTIONERS", published by Vision Comics. This is a beautifully drawn book on high quality glossy paper. Stop and talk to this young, up and coming artist.
I have to admit that we have not always had enough space to properly showcase the single cards, so we are adding some additional showcases for this purpose. We also have lots more space to display our packs and boxes. As always, we will have a good selection of cards from baseball, basketball, and football, and we will have the new BOWMAN CHROME CHL hockey cards from TOPPS. Some cards that are available include the women's basketball league cards, WNBA . We also have a couple of boxes of 98 TOPPS CHROME BASKETBALL we plan to sell to help properly start off our new store, as well as many other excellent brands of cards. Its hard to say exactly what will be available because of the nature of the card business. We just want you to know that GATEWAY will always have the hottest new cards available at a fair price. In addition to sportscards we also will be carrying a number of BOBBING HEAD DOLLS and other sports memorabilia. Check out the new BAMM BEANOS we will be carrying. These are bears (like beanie babie) with a baseball player's name and number sewn onto the back. Players include GRIFFEY and McGUIRE.
Gateway's new store has a large 400 square foot area in the rear area of the store for gameplay. We have an 8’ x 4’ table set up for playing GAMES WORKSHOP games like WARHAMMER, and 9 smaller tables for playing trading card games like MAGIC THE GATHERING, STAR WARS, STAR TREK, OVERPOWER, and any others you like. We hope to hold lots of tournaments and demonstration days. Several game companies have local reps that they use to demo their games. These fine people will be around to run tournaments and to teach you how to play such games as, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Babylon5. Gateway has employees and other people of good will who can help you learn Warhammer, Magic, and lots of other games. We will be setting up certain nights of the week to play certain games, so it should be easier for you to get a game. We will also sell pop and snacks in the store, and there are convenience stores and pizza shops nearby as well. We are interested in hearing from those of you who want to play in a ROLE-PLAYING group. We alo plan to play lots of board games from companies like AVALON HILL. We will be having free classes on how to play these games. Check the calendar of events posted in the store for activities of interest to you.
Gateway carries a large selection of TY BEANIES. TY will not accept new accounts at this time, so we are a secondary market store. Because of this we may be a little higher on some of the newer beanies, but our selection is usually much better than the TY direct market stores. GATEWAY is able to obtain lots of retired beanies through the secondary market and at times we can get the hot new beanies. While we intend to keep serving the TY collectors, we are moving forward aggressively to expand our beanie selection in other areas too! We now have established accounts with SALVINO, the makers of BAMM BEANOS. These are bears licensed by major league baseball players, and have star players names and numbers on the back. Also we carry PUFFKINS from SWIBCO, and are getting in October GRATEFUL DEAD BEANIE BEARS from LIQUID BLUE. In addition we are working on getting COCA-COLA and DISNEY beanies. We aim to give you the best selection we can at reasonable prices.
I want to express my appreciation to all of you that have helped me establish my business to the point that I can make this move to our new store. We’re planning on having our official Grand Opening 9/22 thru 9/26. Stop by for lots of special sales and events and see why I am so excited about the new GATEWAY!
