RANDY
How am I supposed to believe that? Everything leads to you! Every time I saw you, you knew everything about my father. How would you know if you weren’t involved?
MARIN
How are you so sure it was me? What led you to me?
RANDY
I was getting instant messages from your computer. “MarinA.”
MARIN stands shocked. She knows she wasn’t sending any messages at any time that day, and that she wasn’t involved in the murder.
Now, why don’t you just admit to it and I won’t have to kill you.
SIDNEY
Randy, don’t do it.
KILLER
No, Randy. Don’t.
The three turn around and see the KILLER, dressed in black except for a white mask.
Let me.
MARIN
Recognizes the voice of the KILLER.
Greg?
The KILLER takes off his mask and reveals his face; it is the face in the picture on MARIN’S desk, GREG MARIN, the DETECTIVE’S lost husband.
RANDY
What the hell…?
He looks at the picture on the desk and recognizes the face.
Oh, God.
GREG
Hi, honey. I’m home.
He shoots MARIN several times. RANDY and SIDNEY duck down to avoid the shots. When they end, RANDY and SIDNEY get up. MARIN is standing with a pained expression, then falls to the floor, dead.
She told you she didn’t do it, Randy.
RANDY
It was you. You made the calls, you tried to kill me, you killed my dad.
He looks up at GREG, more angry than ever.
I could kill you right now.
SIDNEY
Randy, calm down. I’ll call the police.
She starts to leave, but looks GREG’S gun right in the face.
GREG
I don’t think so, cutie. One more step and you’ll end up like the bathroom door. Put the gun down, Randy.
RANDY hesitates. He’s never been more frightened.
Do it!
RANDY puts the gun down.
RANDY
Why did you kill my father?
GREG
Let’s see…
He waves the gun around like a maniac. He’s obviously crazy.
What does one do when they are offered ten grand to bump someone off? Do they weigh out the options? Or do they just go for the money? I think they grab their two closest buddies and take that money, now wouldn’t you?
RANDY
No.
GREG
Why not? You know you could use the money.
RANDY
I’d rather have a clear conscience than ten grand.
RANDY holds up his gun and GREG shoots it out of his hand.
GREG
And I’d rather have a gun than a smart mouth. Now, will you shut up so I can kill you and your little femme nikita?
LUCY and GALE are inside the house. They hear GREG and RANDY talking in the other room, mostly GREG.
LUCY
Whispering.
Who is that?
GALE
I don’t know.
She looks in the kitchen and sees DOWNS, dead.
Oh, God. Well, there’s definitely a killer in here. That’s probably him in the other room, with Randy and Sidney.
LUCY
I guess this is the time to see if I have the nerve to stab someone.
GALE
Do you think you do?
LUCY
If they’re attacking Randy, I know I do.
She starts walking into the kitchen. GALE follows her and they cross the hallway that leads to the office GREG, RANDY, and SIDNEY are in. GALE stops and looks in. RANDY spots her.
GALE
Lucy, he sees me.
LUCY
Who does?
GALE
Randy. He knows we’re in here now.
LUCY takes the biggest knife in the block. She sees that one of the knives have already been taken out, probably by the killer. She turns to GALE.
LUCY
Let’s boogie.
They both walk toward the office, behind GREG.
GREG
…so, ’92 I leave my lovely wife, Amanda, who’s on the floor there, when I receive a call from Thomas Fader, who’s just won a case that another attorney simply will not lose peacefully.
RANDY
My dad.
GREG
That’s right! Hamilton Meeks. I knew that name sounded familiar last year when all those kids were killed. I just couldn’t put a name with a face. But, how convenient for me! What a great idea, to copy those murders and completely throw the cops off!
LUCY nods to RANDY to make herself known. He sees her.
RANDY
Too bad you exposed yourself when you said that stuff about my father. Because I found out.
GREG
No, you didn’t. You thought it was Amanda.
RANDY
He sees LUCY holding a knife and his eyes widen.
But it sure led us to you, didn’t it?
GREG stops talking and sees RANDY‘S reaction to something behind him. He turns around and sees LUCY and GALE, LUCY with a knife.
GREG
Smiling evilly.
Sure did.
RANDY
Lucy, run!
In one swift motion, LUCY jams the knife into GREG’S leg and twists it before he can aim to shoot her. He yells out in pain and falls against the doorway. RANDY and SIDNEY run out over GREG, grabbing GREG’S gun, which they assume has more bullets in it. RANDY hugs LUCY firmly.
RANDY
Lu, you stabbed that guy!
LUCY
So?
RANDY
I’m so proud of you!
LUCY
Thanks. I learned it in that movie Face/ Off.
RANDY
You’re awesome.
GREG
You’re dead!
GREG pops up from behind, raising the knife that he tore out of his leg. RANDY turns around as GREG drives the knife through his leg. RANDY screams and slumps to the ground. GALE runs to the phone as SIDNEY tries to shoot the gun. It doesn’t fire and she throws it down onto the kitchen floor.
SIDNEY
Shit! Randy, I have to get the other gun.
RANDY
Hurry up! He’s gonna kill me!
GREG
Well, right after I kill the one that stabbed me, yeah.
He looks at LUCY, then RANDY does the same.
RANDY
Lucy, run!
LUCY
No, you’re gonna bleed to death!
RANDY
So are you when he stabs you! Run!
LUCY runs away from GREG, who is limping toward her rapidly. In the office, SIDNEY has the other gun and fires at GREG. She misses and hits a point on the wall.
GALE cannot figure out why she can’t make a phone call. She hears noises like a modem instead. She hangs up the phone.
GALE
I can’t get through. Something’s wrong with the phone.
She turns to leave, but doesn’t realize she is standing next to GREG. When she starts walking, he grabs her leg, pulling her to the floor. He raises the knife and gets ready to stab her in the chest. She screams.
From the office, SIDNEY fires the gun, misses, but distracts GREG. GALE kicks GREG off of her and gets up. She starts to help RANDY up, but RANDY gets the knife in his side. LUCY takes the gun from SIDNEY and runs over to help him. She shoots GREG in the back, slowing his actions down. He drops the knife. LUCY kneels down to RANDY.
LUCY
It’s okay. I’m here. You’ll be okay, I promise.
RANDY
I don’t know. That’s a pretty hard promise to keep.
GALE
Also kneeling down.
Randy, are you okay?
RANDY
I’m fine. I don’t mind, really. I’ve done worse.
SIDNEY
Randy, stop. Come on. Let’s get you to the hospital, now.
GREG
Groggily.
Not so fast, Meeks.
GREG is holding the gun he had originally brought with him. He flips a switch on it.
Works better when the safety’s off.
GALE jumps down to grab the gun and holds his arm. SIDNEY grabs the knife and raises it over GREG. The gun goes off four times. The knife comes down just as many, if not, more times. ALL let out screams at different times.
GALE is the first one to break the silence.
GALE
Weakly.
Hello?
No one answers. She feels a sharp pain in her side. She looks and sees a blood spot, a gunshot wound. The bullet was on the floor, having bounced off her rib.
SIDNEY lifts her head and looks at GALE. When she tries to get up, a pain in her arm stops her. She’d been stabbed.
SIDNEY
Gale?
GALE
Sidney, are you okay?
SIDNEY
No, my arm. It’s cut.
GALE
Ow…Shit.
SIDNEY
He must have grabbed the knife from me.
GALE
He had the gun, too.
SIDNEY
She looks at GALE and sees the blood.
Oh, God! You were shot!
GALE
It’s okay. It bounced off my ribs.
SIDNEY
What about Randy and Lucy? Guys? Are you okay?
No answer. She becomes worried.
Randy? Lucy?
SIDNEY and GALE look at the floor where RANDY and LUCY are laying, both motionless. A puddle of blood is forming underneath them, running towards SIDNEY‘S knees. She slides back, away from the red stream.
Randy, please.
She puts her hand on his shoulder and gently shakes it. RANDY doesn’t move.
Lucy?
She does the same to LUCY, who also doesn’t move. She leans over to get closer to RANDY. SIDNEY almost recoils when she sees a thick line of blood on his forehead, then a bleeding circle in LUCY‘S temple. LUCY had been shot in the head by the same bullet that grazed RANDY‘S forehead. LUCY is dead. SIDNEY feels RANDY‘S wrist for a pulse, and sees a deep gash in his arm. There is no pulse. RANDY is dead.
No…
GALE puts her hand on SIDNEY‘S shoulder. SIDNEY walks out of the house, grief-stricken and in shock, and in disbelief that her only remaining childhood friend was dead, killed by the same man that had killed his father, and killed next to someone he could have spent the rest of his life with. Then she realizes that in a way, he did.
Cut to: SIDNEY‘S bedroom. She is in black, sitting on her bed, crying into her hands. It is the day of RANDY‘S and LUCY‘S funerals. She takes out a copy of the picture of herself, RANDY, BILLY, STU, and TATUM, then another of RANDY and LUCY. She places them face down on her bad and turns on the television.
NEWS REPORTER
…The bodies of Randall Meeks and his girlfriend, Lucy Strode were laid to rest today in Garrison Cemetery, three days after their murder in Woodsboro. The two were part of the second Woodsboro murder spree, Meeks being an original survivor. Also killed in the final brawl were Officers Kevin Downs and Gary Traven, Detective Amanda Marin and her husband, the murderer, Gregory Marin. Seen at the funeral were two more of the original survivors, television personality Gale Weathers and Sidney Prescott. Neither could be reached for comments…
During the reporter’s words, SIDNEY has walked into the furthest corner of her room. She empties a bottle of prescription sleeping pills, left over from the first spree, takes a drink of water, and starts swallowing the pills. After downing most of them, she draws a small knife, and cuts her wrists while focusing on the two pictures on her bed. The reporter continues as she sobs and bleeds in the corner.
…According to Woodsboro Sheriff Anthony Burke, Gregory Marin started out as a motivated killer, and used last year’s spree to disguise himself as a copycat to throw them off the trail. Marin was responsible for the planned car accident that killed Meeks’ father five years ago in Pittsburgh. Meeks is survived by his mother and two older half-siblings. Strode is survived by her parents and younger sister…
Across town, GALE is smoking nervously in her apartment. She is watching the same report that SIDNEY was watching. Tears well up in her eyes and stream down her makeup-smeared face. She is also in black, coming from the funeral. The only light is the television set; her shades are drawn and are covered by curtains, anything to block out the sun that didn’t match her mood.
The phone rings. GALE hesitates before answering it. She shakily picks up the phone.
GALE
Raspy and quiet.
Hello?… Yes, this is Gale. Who is this?… Larry, hi…No, I’m fine. Just sad…What?…
What she hears on the other end makes her extremely angry.
I will not. I refuse. I will never write another book about murder…
LARRY
Can be heard on the other end.
But Gale, blood sells. Especially real blood.
GALE
Cringes when she realizes she said the exact same words.
It also hurts.
She slams the phone down on the receiver and takes another drag on the cigarette. The tears start pouring down and she turns off the television. She drops the cigarette on the floor, disregarding the fact that it’s still burning. The carpet starts to smolder as GALE walks over to her nighttable. She opens the drawer and pulls out a gun that BURKE had given to her when she first heard about RANDY‘S first attack. She had figured BURKE was joking and being overprotective when he’d given her the gun and left it in her glove compartment. Then she had put it in her purse later on, and after the brawl, put it in her nighttable drawer. GALE holds the gun to her head and pulls the trigger as a flame rises from the carpet. She falls to the floor with a thud.
Cut to: Three months later, in Philadelphia. DARYL ZIMMERMAN and ROBERT JILSEN are on their computer in a hidden loft. Both of their names come up when they log on to their home page, entitled:
“GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER”
Pictures of SIDNEY, GALE, LUCY, RANDY, and his father come up on the screen as the camera fades out mysteriously…
THE END
