MARIN
My guess is that they were just there to throw us off, maybe distract us from the real crime.
BURKE
Good point.
Cut to a local park. GALE and RANDY are walking through, wondering where they could possibly go, what they could possibly do. SIDNEY and LUCY are in a Burger King across the street.
RANDY
To GALE.
You were really on Dateline NBC? I didn’t see it.
GALE
It was right after the whole thing happened. You were probably in the hospital.
RANDY
Sounds accurate.
GALE
Did you ever go back to school?
RANDY
Yeah, eventually. I didn’t want to, but Sidney actually convinced me to go back.
GALE
When did you finally go back?
RANDY
Uh, May. Two months after the whole thing.
GALE
You certainly took your time.
RANDY
I was scared to death to go back. I was so afraid that everyone would…would…
GALE
Ask?
RANDY
Yeah. Exactly. Sidney had told me it wasn’t that bad, just a couple of looks and comments.
GALE
And was it that bad?
RANDY
No, not at all. People asked me how I was doing, and I told them the truth; I was doing horribly. But everyone was pretty much sympathetic. Sidney was in my calculus class and they threw a party for me.
He laughs suddenly.
I’ll never forget, this one guy was like, “Man, you were shot by Billy Loomis?” And I said, “Yeah. In the chest.” He just stood there, this amazed look on his face. He couldn’t believe it. Then all of my female teachers and all the girls were like “Oh, my God! Look at you! You were almost killed! You’ve lost so much weight! Oh!”
GALE
Laughing at RANDY‘S impression of a girl.
How much weight did you lose?
RANDY
Thinks for a second, then sighs.
Jeez, like 25 pounds.
GALE gasps.
Yeah, I didn’t eat anything for weeks. Couldn’t keep it down. When you’re having nightmares about being murdered every night, you kind of lose your appetite.
GALE
Maybe I should try that.
Cut to Burger King. SIDNEY is ordering; LUCY is waiting next to her, looking outside.
LUCY
So, why weren’t you upset about Tad?
SIDNEY
Well, we weren’t exactly that close. I’d only met him last week.
LUCY
But I thought he was your boyfriend.
SIDNEY
Confessing.
Actually, I only said that to make Randy jealous. I know it’s a little mean, but I was really just trying to get a point across. To be honest with you, Tad was just a bodyguard. I’m more pissed that this whole death thing is happening again. I think three times is way too many times for me and Randy to be dealing with something like this.
LUCY sees a car speeding towards the park where she knows RANDY and GALE are waiting for them. LUCY runs to the window to get a closer look. SIDNEY turns around from the counter.
What’s wrong?
LUCY
There’s a car driving towards the park.
SIDNEY
Where Randy and Gale are?
LUCY
Yeah.
She watches longer. The car turns down the street that RANDY and GALE are walking down.
Oh, God. Sid, we gotta go, now!
LUCY runs out. SIDNEY looks back and forth to the guy at the counter.
SIDNEY
Hesitating.
Uh… I’ll be right back.
She follows LUCY out of Burger King and across the street. She sees the car that is chasing RANDY and GALE and starts running after LUCY. Cars honk their horns as the two girls ignore the traffic and tear across the busy street.
LUCY
Shouting.
Randy!!! Behind you!
SIDNEY
Also shouting.
Gale!!! Randy!!! Look out!
RANDY thinks he hears his name and turns around. He sees a car accelerating towards him and GALE. His eyes widen and he grabs GALE‘S shoulder.
GALE
What?
RANDY
Run!
They both run as fast as they can away from the large navy blue Jeep, which is careening towards them, even through the park. SIDNEY and LUCY cross the park to meet RANDY and GALE on the other side. The Jeep drives through the park, not giving up on RANDY or GALE. They jump over benches and bushes, but the Jeep keeps gaining on them. Suddenly, RANDY has an idea. He pulls GALE to the side, losing the Jeep, over to a children’s playground, and up a slide where some kids are playing, thinking that nobody could be heartless enough to drive through a playground.
RANDY
Heavily breathing.
If he drives through here, he’s gotta be crazy.
GALE
Can’t you tell? He already is!
RANDY
Well, maybe he’ll stop.
GALE
I hope you’re right.
RANDY was wrong. He and GALE hear kids and parents screaming and scattering. They look at each other in dread.
Two seconds later, they feel a huge impact against the slide they are hiding in. They are tossed around the tiny tree house at the top of the slide and feel themselves falling. They hit the ground with a bang.
There is a moment of silence. Dust from the surrounding sand chokes them. They don’t move.
RANDY
Gale?
GALE
Yeah?
RANDY
You okay?
GALE
I’m okay. You?
RANDY
I think so.
He coughs.
Do you think it’s over?
GALE
We are on the ground. There’s not much further we can go.
RANDY
You’ve got a point.
They hear the Jeep start up again and look at each other again, fearing the worst. The Jeep rams into the fallen slide, sending it barreling through the park, until it finally is crushed against a boulder.
SIDNEY and LUCY watch in horror.
The Jeep backs away from the dusty wreck and drives away, past SIDNEY and LUCY. They both catch a glimpse of the KILLER in the driver’s seat, wearing all black and the white mask of MICHAEL MYERS. SIDNEY puts her hand to her mouth in amazement and fear.
SIDNEY
My God, Randy was right. It is Michael Myers.
LUCY
In a panic.
God fucking damnit! I hate scary movies! He’s dead! I’m gonna kill that fucker!
SIDNEY
I’ll help you, but we have to help Randy and Gale first. Come on.
SIDNEY grabs LUCY‘S arm and they run to the crushed slide. There is no movement, just a huge cloud of dust. A stream of blood is coming out from underneath the slide. LUCY sobs. SIDNEY looks around at all the parents and children watching on.
SIDNEY
Frantic.
What the hell are you waiting for? Call the fucking police!
SIDNEY bends down to the slide and shakes it.
Randy? Gale? Are you in there?
No answer.
Randy?
Still no answer.
Gale?
She pulls the slide away from the boulder and looks away. LUCY sees her and starts sobbing.
RANDY
Hoarse from the dust.
I think I heard bones crunch.
GALE
You too?
LUCY
Oh, please, oh, please…
Randy? Is that you?
RANDY
Lu, help us get out of this thing!
LUCY
Are you guys okay?
RANDY
Yeah, just a little motion sickness.
SIDNEY
Gale, how about you?
GALE
I’m fine, I’m just stuck.
SIDNEY and LUCY start pulling apart the slide, tearing a hole in the side, then breaking off the chunk of plastic. LUCY sees RANDY and reaches her hand out. He takes it and kicks his way out. LUCY helps him out and he staggers at first. He bends over to help GALE out. He sees the stream of blood on the ground and looks at the boulder. There is a squashed chipmunk plastered to the side of it. LUCY goes to look at it, but RANDY stops her.
RANDY
No, don’t look. You don’t want to.
SIDNEY
What is it?
GALE
Yeah, what did we…?
RANDY
A chipmunk.
ALL make noises of disgust. LUCY takes RANDY‘S hand and rubs it.
Let’s get outta here. He’s gone.
SIDNEY
We have to go back to the police. Now we have witnesses.
She gestures to all the onlookers.
GALE
She looks down the street and sees police cars and ambulances.
They can talk now. Here they come.
SIDNEY
Good.
She looks at RANDY and GALE.
You’re sure you’re okay, both of you?
RANDY
Yeah, something landed on my shoulder funny. I’ll be fine.
GALE
Uh, Randy broke my fall.
RANDY
No problem.
He twists his back and it makes a sound like crunching pretzels.
I just feel really bad for the family of that chipmunk.
ALL start to walk away from the wreck. LUCY looks back at it.
SIDNEY
Please, Randy, not now.
RANDY
Poor Chip and Dale. I’ll bet that was their cousin. By marriage. Once removed.
Cut to OFFICER DOWNS. He is walking through a house at an address he found investigating a name he had received from BURKE. He is with OFFICER TRAVEN. It is now sunset.
TRAVEN
So, why are we here again?
DOWNS
Burke gave me a name. I found the address.
TRAVEN
And what are we supposed to find?
DOWNS
Any sign of a killer, I guess.
TRAVEN
What’s a typical sign of a killer?
DOWNS
Frustrated. TRAVEN is a newcomer to the police force.
I have no idea. Just think of a scary movie or something.
TRAVEN
Oh, you mean like ominous music or something?
DOWNS
First looking at him, in disbelief of TRAVEN’S stupidity.
Yeah, Traven, listen for ominous music. Let’s go.
DOWNS and TRAVEN hold up their guns, ready for anything to jump up at them. The house is dark. The windows are shut, the shades are drawn. They slowly and quietly creep around each corner. DOWNS finds a long hallway and gestures for TRAVEN to follow him, which he eagerly does. The hallway leads to a closed door, which is locked. DOWNS breaks it down and an office is revealed. They walk into the office, around the desk. DOWNS gasps when he sees a photograph.
DOWNS
Holy shit.
TRAVEN
What?
DOWNS
He picks up the picture and walks over to TRAVEN to show it to him.
It’s Detective Marin.
TRAVEN
Oh, my God…
Behind them, the KILLER raises his knife over DOWNS’ back and plunges it into him. DOWNS is in shock and doesn’t scream, just falls to the floor. TRAVEN doesn’t see this happen.
Can you believe that? Detective Marin! I didn’t think she had it in her!…uh, Downs? Downs?
The KILLER stabs TRAVEN repeatedly until he finally falls to the ground, dead, next to DOWNS’ equally dead body.
Cut to police station. BURKE is impatiently awaiting information from DOWNS and TRAVEN. He is pacing back and forth. It is half an hour later.
RANDY, SIDNEY, LUCY, and GALE rush into the station, RANDY and GALE covered in dust, looking disheveled.
BURKE
What happened?
RANDY
The killer tried to…well, kill me and Gale this afternoon.
BURKE
Are you okay? Why are you covered in dust?
GALE
We’re fine. We were chased by a Jeep in the park and nearly crushed to death in a kiddie slide against a boulder.
BURKE
A Jeep? What color was it?
RANDY
Confused, but eager for information.
Blue, why?
BURKE
He pauses.
Randy, how many of the minor details of your father’s murder do you know?
RANDY
Not that many. Why? What’s going on?
BURKE waves ALL into his office. They follow him and sit on a couch. BURKE removes files that MARIN had faxed to him that morning, the files on RANDY‘S father. He opens the folder containing the files.
What’s that?
BURKE
Detective Marin sent over some information you may not have been aware of, like the fact that a red Jeep was the car that crashed into your father and killed him.
RANDY swallows and takes the folder handed to him by BURKE. He opens it and starts reading.
LUCY
Another Jeep?
BURKE
Yup. We’ve been investigating all day. I’m starting to think that double murder was just a distraction for us. Whoever this guy is, I don’t think he realizes exactly who he’s dealing with.
SIDNEY
Yeah, professional victims.
GALE
So, is there any way to track that Jeep?
BURKE
Well, we can try. Did you happen to see the license number?
GALE looks at SIDNEY and LUCY, since they were the ones who had actually had time to see the car. SIDNEY realizes something.
SIDNEY
It didn’t have license plates.
BURKE
Are you sure?
SIDNEY
Yeah, there were none. And it was a brand new car. It must have been stolen right out of the lot.
BURKE
Certainly sounds that way, doesn’t it?
RANDY is completely engrossed in the files. He is finding out more and more information that he wishes he’d known before. He closes the folder.
RANDY
Who was the third passenger?
BURKE
Switches to RANDY‘S subject.
I don’t know. We weren’t able to find out yet. We did find an address, if you’d like to check it out. We sent Officer Downs and Traven there today.
Realizing they are a little late.
They must have found something. They’ve been gone for awhile now.
RANDY
Do you have a computer I can use?
BURKE
Seeing that Randy obviously doesn’t want to hear anything from him; he’d rather see it for himself.
Yeah. You can use Downs’ until he comes back. It’s the second office to the right.
Randy wastes no time and makes a mad dash for DOWNS’ office. He turns the computer on and connects to the online service. He types in the address on the top of the paper in the folder. The news story about his father comes up.
RANDY
Oh, my God.
He clicks on links and becomes immersed completely in the story. He gets up and closes the door.
In BURKE’S office, they are still discussing the possibilities. LUCY looks towards the office, where RANDY is diligently searching for answers.
BURKE
Detective Marin is gone for the day. She had a family situation to attend. She should be home at about eight.
SIDNEY
Why wasn’t Detective Marin working on last year’s case?
BURKE
I just hired her last month. She moved here after her husband was officially reported missing last year and started interning with the police force. She’s good. You’d be impressed with her if you ever met her.
GALE
What has she found out so far?
BURKE
Well, at first she thought it was just a copycat, but after she looked up the murder of Randy's father, she’s found out things that…well, that Randy didn’t even know.
SIDNEY
Well, Randy was only fourteen when it happened. Nobody wanted to tell him anything because he was so young. After awhile he didn’t want to know.
BURKE
What about his mother? How much did she know?
SIDNEY
She knew everything. But as soon as the trial was over, she didn’t care. Mrs. Jansen, that’s Randy's mom, told me that as soon as she found out that couple was cleared, she decided to lay it to rest and never think another thought of it.
BURKE
She never bothered to find out anything else?
SIDNEY
Nope.
GALE
Wow, I didn’t realize you guys were so close.
SIDNEY
I’d consider him my best friend, since Tatum Riley.
ALL look at LUCY, staring out the window on the door at the office RANDY is in.
Lucy, you’re a little distracted.
LUCY
Oh, sorry. I didn’t get a lot of sleep last night.
GALE
You slept fine last night.
She rubs LUCY‘S shoulder.
I think you’re just worried.
LUCY
How can I not be? He’s gonna burn his eyes out in there, staring at that computer.
BURKE smiles and looks at LUCY, GALE, and SIDNEY.
BURKE
Listen, I don’t want any of you going anywhere today. I’d really like it if you stayed here, at the station. It’s obvious that you’re not safe anywhere else. I’m going to head to some dealerships and try to track down that blue Jeep. I’ll see you kids later.
BURKE leaves and ALL say good-bye as he walks out.
GALE
So, what do we do now?
SIDNEY
I guess just wait until we hear something.
GALE
I don’t know if I want to wait that long.
SIDNEY
I know I don’t. But there’s really nothing else to do.
GALE
Gets up.
I’ll get Randy.
LUCY
No, don’t. Just let him do what he wants.
GALE sits back down. The three of them sigh.
GALE
So, when was your first make-out session?
The three girls wait in the office while RANDY types away in the other room.
The sun sets and the time passes. RANDY has been typing away and looking for information feverishly for the past three hours. Meanwhile, the three girls have been bonding in BURKE’S office.
SIDNEY
No way. Patrick Swayze was the god of dancing. I used to have dreams about being Jennifer Grey and we would just dance and dance and dance the night away…
LUCY
He was a wuss. I had the biggest crush on Harrison Ford in all the Indiana Jones movies.
GALE
Come on! Everybody had the biggest crush on Harrison Ford! I liked Robert Redford. He was just the cutest thing I’d ever seen.
LUCY
He’s okay. He doesn’t even stand a chance next to Jeff Goldblum.
SIDNEY and GALE look at her.
What? How can you not think he’s hot? Didn’t you see The Fly when he came out of the telepod naked? He was gorgeous!
GALE
Thinking.
Yeah, I can see that.
In the other office, RANDY is becoming a little exhausted. He’s found tons of information, so much that it’s become nerve-wracking. He hears a beep coming from the computer and snaps to attention. It’s an instant message e-mail. He debates for a second on whether or not he should answer it. He clicks on the blinking bar at the bottom of the screen and a message comes up:
“I KNOW IT’S YOU”
RANDY responds.
“THEN WHO IS IT?”
He receives another message.
“RANDY"
RANDY panics and looks at the screen name of the sender: MarinA
His first thought is DETECTIVE MARIN. He sends a message.
“DETECTIVE MARIN, I KNOW THIS IS YOU”
“NO IT’S NOT”
“THEN WHO IS IT?”
“YOUR KILLER”
RANDY panics again, but keeps his cool. He can’t be killed through a computer. Before he can send another message, another comes up.
“AND YOUR FATHER’S KILLER”
“LIKE FATHER LIKE SON”
RANDY sends another message.
“FUCK YOU”
He quickly turns off the computer and storms out of the office into the one where the GIRLS are.
RANDY
Adamant.
Come on. We’re leaving, now.
LUCY
What’s going on? Did you find something?
RANDY
Sure did. We have to go to Detective Marin’s house. The killer is there.
GALE
Did he say who he was?
RANDY
No, but if we could please leave, I could solve a mystery that’s been haunting me for years.
SIDNEY
Surprised.
Your father’s killer?
RANDY
Yup.
LUCY
How do you know he’s at Marin’s house?
RANDY
I was on the computer and I got an instant message thing. The screen name was “Marina” with a capital “A” at the end. Like “Marin-A.” We’ve gotta find out where she lives. Where’s her office?
SIDNEY
I have a better idea. Why don’t we look her up in Sheriff Burke’s files?
RANDY jumps right to BURKE’S computer, finds a program titled “Employee Files,” and goes into it. He types in MARIN’S name. A picture of her comes up and a profile, including her home address.
RANDY
Bingo! Found it!
He clicks on an icon to print the profile. It comes out of BURKE’S printer and RANDY grabs it.
854 Laurel Drive. Sid, do you know where that is?
SIDNEY
Yeah.
RANDY
Then let’s go.
He sees opens BURKE’S desk drawer and sees a pistol inside. He takes it and tucks it in his pants, his shirt hiding it. LUCY looks at him, concerned.
LUCY
Why…?
RANDY
Because. That’s why. It’ll be okay.
LUCY
I wish that were true.
RANDY sees the worry in her face and he touches it gently.
RANDY
It will be.
LUCY takes his hand and grasps it. RANDY grasps it back.
Let’s go.
RANDY and LUCY exchange one more glance and they ALL leave the station and jump into SIDNEY‘S car. She drives to the address and pulls up in front of the house. SIDNEY turns off the car and starts to get out.
RANDY
No, Sid. Stay here.
SIDNEY
What are you talking about? Stop trying to be The Man, Randy.
RANDY looks at SIDNEY, a little insulted.
RANDY
Fine. Then come with me, hot shot.
To his surprise, SIDNEY gets out of the car and slams the door shut. RANDY follows her and they head towards the house.
LUCY
Randy, wait.
He goes back to the car as LUCY rolls down the window on her side. She puts her hand out and RANDY holds it tightly.
Remember what I told you yesterday. We’ll be together until the very end.
RANDY
I promise.
They kiss each other, then RANDY fluffs LUCY'S hair and runs into the house, which is already unlocked. LUCY wipes away a tear of worry. GALE rubs her shoulder.
GALE
You know he won’t go back on his word.
LUCY
I know.
Inside, the house is dark and ominous. RANDY and SIDNEY step quietly, prepared for anything to happen. They hear another step and stop in their tracks.
SIDNEY
Randy, was that you?
RANDY
Uh, no. I thought it was you.
SIDNEY
No. There’s someone else here.
They both turn around, standing back to back.
SIDNEY
We should split up.
RANDY
Yeah, if we wanna die.
SIDNEY
Well, would you rather one of us died or both of us died?
RANDY
That’s not very fair.
SIDNEY
I’ll go left, you go right.
RANDY
Oh, fine. Shout if you need anything.
SIDNEY
Ditto.
They split up. RANDY walks through the dark hallways, lit only by streetlights outside. He goes to flick a light switch, but another light comes on before he can do so.
RANDY
In a loud whisper.
Sid?
SIDNEY
Yeah?
RANDY
Did you put on that light?
SIDNEY
What light?
RANDY doesn’t answer. He just leans against the wall and slides across it to a corner. He looks around the corner right after the KILLER rushes across the next hall. After the KILLER is gone, RANDY turns the corner and walks down the hall. He goes into the first room on the left, the bathroom. The shower is running, the curtain drawn.
RANDY
Embarrassed.
Oh, sorry about that.
There is no answer.
Hello?
Still no answer. RANDY walks in and opens the curtain. The dead body of a cop, OFFICER TRAVEN, is slumped on one side of the shower. Blood is running down the drain. RANDY looks down. There is blood on the floor as well. RANDY keeps himself from screaming and turns off the water. The door is slammed behind him. He rushes to it and tried to open it, but something is jamming the doorknob on the other side.
RANDY
Pounding on the door.
Sidney! Sidney, get me outta here!
RANDY starts kicking on the door frantically, trying to break through it.
On the other side of the house, SIDNEY is looking through every other room and hears pounding. She follows it and hears RANDY calling her name. The bathroom door is being broken through and a nail has been driven through the doorknob, keeping it from being opened.
SIDNEY
Randy, shoot the doorknob!
RANDY does so several times as SIDNEY stands back.
Randy! Randy! Stop! Now, kick it!
RANDY kicks the door open and the door bursts open.
RANDY
I’ve always wanted to do that.
SIDNEY
Do you have any bullets left? Did that occur to you while you were giving the door a belly full of lead?
RANDY
Shit. You’re right.
He checks the gun.
Well, there’s three left.
SIDNEY
How good is your aim?
RANDY
I don’t know. I’ve never fired a gun at a person before.
SIDNEY
Looking in the bathroom.
What’s in there?
RANDY
Dead cop. Stabbed to death. Did you find anything like that?
SIDNEY
No, nothing. There was one room I didn’t go in, though.
RANDY
Then, let’s go.
They walk down to the end of the hall and find the only door they haven’t covered. It’s locked. A noise comes from the kitchen. RANDY and SIDNEY look away from the locked room.
SIDNEY
Did you hear that?
RANDY
Sure did.
The light that was turned on goes off.
She’s playing with us. We shouldn’t go to the kitchen.
SIDNEY
Maybe it’s Lucy or Gale.
RANDY considers the option and looks at SIDNEY. He heads to the kitchen, followed by SIDNEY.
RANDY
Lu? Are you in there?
SIDNEY
Gale?
She sees something she wishes she hadn’t.
Oh, no.
RANDY
What?
He looks where SIDNEY did.
Oh, God.
OFFICER DOWNS’ bloody, dead, butchered body is sprawled out on the kitchen table, dripping onto the floor. He is barely recognizable, except for the tattoo of an eagle on his forearm.
Who is that?
SIDNEY
Officer Downs. Well, it used to be.In the car, LUCY and GALE are anxiously waiting for RANDY and SIDNEY to come back. They see another car coming.
GALE
Lucy, get down.
LUCY listens and both crouch down in the front seat. LUCY peeks over the seat to watch the other car pull up. The car stops and the headlights go off. A woman steps out of the car; DETECTIVE MARIN.
LUCY
It’s Detective Marin. She came home.
GALE
Maybe we should go in after them.
LUCY
I don’t know…
GALE
I’m sure Randy would appreciate your company.
LUCY
How can he appreciate my company if I’m dead?
GALE
Lucy, if anyone tries to mess with you, I’ll kick their ass, okay?
LUCY looks at GALE, and for the first time she feels like she is telling the truth. She watches DETECTIVE MARIN walk into the house and look surprised that the door is already unlocked.
Inside, SIDNEY and RANDY leave the kitchen when they hear a noise at the front door. They rush toward the office and try to open the door. MARIN walks through her living room and doesn’t see anything unusual. She hears footsteps and noises of struggling.
RANDY
Maybe I should just shoot the door.
SIDNEY
With three bullets left? I don’t think so.
MARIN hears the voices and starts heading towards her office. She is unaware of the KILLER behind her.
RANDY
I’m shooting it. Stand back.
SIDNEY
Randy, I don’t think…
RANDY shoots the doorknob once and the door flies open. He gives SIDNEY an “I-told-you-so” look. They walk in and see blood on the floor when they turn on the light. RANDY rushes to the computer and looks at the screen. He sees a screen saver, a message moving across the screen:
“I KNOW YOU’RE HERE RANDY"
RANDY
Shit.
SIDNEY
What?
RANDY looks up and sees MARIN standing behind SIDNEY. RANDY holds up his gun and SIDNEY turns around.
RANDY
Don’t move. I know it was you.
MARIN
What are you doing in my house?
RANDY
What were you doing in mine?
MARIN
What are you talking about?
RANDY
Listen! I’m not an idiot! I know everything about you, Detective Marin, even if it was nearly five years ago. You don’t just forget things like that.
MARIN
Assuming he is talking about her husband.
What? What do you know?
RANDY
I know you were that third passenger.
MARIN
Third passenger?
RANDY
Yeah, the one that got away.
MARIN
Got away with what?
RANDY
Very matter-of-factly.
Murder.
MARIN
Dumbfounded, realizes what RANDY is talking about now.
You think I killed your father.
RANDY
No, I know you killed my father.
MARIN
Randy, I had nothing to do with your father’s murder.
