The X-Files: 'Field Trip'

Investigating the deaths of a couple whose skeletons were found in the middle of a field covered in some kind of digestive juices.

The finding of the two skeletons covered in a similar goo to that which Scully was in in the movie is rather intriguing, as it seems we're about to get a glimpse into more of the conspiracy, but although something of this nature comes to pass, it's all a hallucination on Mulder's part. Clever though the actual idea of a plant entity who controls people's minds while they're being eaten is, the main problem is that this episode could have been really fantastic if all the things that happen in it actually tunred out to be true. Scully discovering a true alien is such an important step to waste.

The other problem is that it's pretty clear from early on in the episode that Mulder and/or Scully is hallucinating, so it just remains to get them rescued. However, as they themselves point out, they need to actually be rescued rather than breaking free, as that would require breaking out of their drugged state. Particularly strange is that the way the two agents work out that they haven't really escaped comes to naught, because when they actually get out, they have no burns and do not appear partially eaten at all, as Mulder suspects. Have they really broken free? Because if so, there's some poor continuity going on.

It's not a bad episode, with some great scenes in it, but it just would have been much better if it had all been real. Oh, and how exactly are Mulder and Scully sharing the same hallucination?
